Footage that Swierk recently captured of submerged anoles shows prominent bubbles swelling and deflating on the reptiles’ heads. Diving anoles aren’t fast runners and rely mostly on camouflage to hide from predators such as birds, snakes, mammals and other lizards. For diving anoles, gular pumping may also play a part in circulating stored oxygen, affecting how long anoles can stay underwater. A throat-pumping action called gular pumping may play a part in circulating stored oxygen, affecting how long anoles can stay underwater. Another unresolved question is how diving anoles store and circulate oxygen while underwater.

CNN —Archaeologists have unearthed the ancient remains of an Egyptian army barracks and the artifacts left there, including a still-shiny bronze sword engraved with the name of King Ramses II in hieroglyphics. According to the ministry, Egypt was enjoying a time of economic prosperity and political stability known as the New Kingdom when the fort was in use. Archaeologists also uncovered necklaces made from carnelian and faience beads – types of semi-precious stones used by the ancient Egyptians – as well as half a bronze ring. Archaeologists uncovered several personal items belonging to the soldiers. Some of the rooms were used to store food, Ayman Ashmawy, head of the Egyptian antiquities sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said, with fragments of large pottery and animal bones still remaining.

The latest research looked at a part of the brain called the olfactory bulb, which processes information about smell. Connecting the olfactory bulb and the nasal cavity is the olfactory nerve. Some researchers worry the olfactory pathway may also be an entry point for microplastics getting into the brain, beyond the olfactory bulb. Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 cadavers of people who died between the ages of 33 and 100. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb doesn’t automatically mean there are microplastics elsewhere in the brain, such as regions related to cognition.

By the time Harvey found the posting online, the medical examiner had sent Coleman’s body to the Health Science Center. “‘Did he actually die?’”After Victor Honey’s body arrived at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, the harvesting began. “If you could find us,“ she asked, “why didn’t they?”Do you have a story to share about the use of unclaimed bodies for research? Dr. Douglas Hampers, the CEO of National Bioskills Laboratories — which had leased Honey’s torso — said he was disturbed to learn his company had received unclaimed bodies. He said his company would ensure that it no longer accepted unclaimed bodies and would adopt policies to make certain future specimens were donated with families’ permission. To curb this ghastly 19th-century practice, states adopted laws giving schools authority to use unclaimed bodies for student training and experiments. Each of the 44 that answered said they don’t use unclaimed bodies — and some condemned doing so.

The Biden Administration on Monday awarded Intel up to an additional $3 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act for the "Secure Enclave" program which is designed to expand the supply of microelectronics for the U.S. Department of Defense. Intel is building foundry plants in four states as part of its project to increase domestic semiconductor manufacturing for other suppliers. In March, the Biden administration awarded Intel with up to $8.5 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, in a recent meeting with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, voiced frustration over the heavy reliance that U.S. companies have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's largest contract chipmaker. The company announced in August it would cut 15% of its workforce as part of a $10 billion cost-reduction plan.

I applied for a green card after working on my H-1B visa for a year. By this point, I had lived in the US for about six years and created a whole life here, but the green card process was very painful. The process makes life pretty horribleHaving a work visa and going through the green card process are privileges, but it is very hard to separate the emotional component. Luckily, Microsoft paid for the attorneys in the green card process, and no cost came out of my pocket. In 2022, I finally received my green card after three years.

“The study also shows that food contact materials can contain mutagenic chemicals that harm our DNA, such as heavy metals,” Wagner said. Another chemical group in food packaging that has migrated into people is phthalates, the research revealed. “We’ve got, say, 60 years of research into the migration of chemicals into food from food processing and packaging equipment. “Given that there are (tens) of thousands of food contact chemicals, biomonitoring programs do not have the capacity to test for all chemicals we are potentially exposed to,” Wagner said. “However, there are also important gaps that need to be addressed as we undertake the work to strengthen our food chemical safety activities,” he said.

New York CNN —Intel’s struggling chip-making business got a boost Monday from a high-profile client: Amazon. Intel Foundry and Amazon Web Services will coinvest in a custom chip design for the latter and “announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework,” according to a release. “Specifically, Intel Foundry will produce an AI fabric chip for AWS on Intel 18A,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the statement Monday. The new deal, along with a $3 billion grant from the US government to boost domestic chip making and make chips for the US military, “demonstrates the continued progress we are making to build a world-class foundry business,” Intel said in the statement. Intel has changed its business model to try to become a global chip manufacturer to rival Taiwan’s TSMC.

CNN —Engineers at NASA have successfully fired up a set of thrusters Voyager 1 hasn’t used in decades to solve an issue that could keep the 47-year-old spacecraft from communicating with Earth from billions of miles away. Currently the farthest spacecraft from Earth, Voyager 1 is about 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away. Earlier this year, engineers spotted an issue when the fuel tube inside one of Voyager’s thrusters became clogged. Engineers switched again to the trajectory correction thruster set in 2018 when the second set also appeared clogged. Once the spacecraft has exhausted this thruster set, Voyager 1’s remaining option is the other already clogged set of attitude propulsion thrusters.

A full moon on Tuesday will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse, giving people in North America, South America, Africa and Europe a chance to see part of the moon’s surface obscured by Earth’s shadow. A partial lunar eclipse occurs as Earth passes between the moon and the sun, creating a celestial alignment that blocks sunlight from hitting the lunar surface. It will also be a supermoon, because the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical, 27-day orbit. After the peak of the eclipse, the moon will begin exiting Earth’s shadow, ending early Wednesday at around 12:47 a.m. Unlike with solar eclipses, there’s no need to wear protective eyewear when watching a lunar eclipse and it can be viewed safely with the naked eye.
