There were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians who worked on the Manhattan Project. In the labs, there were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians among the 400 or so scientists employed by the project. The project was unique for bringing together "colored and white, Christian and Jew" for a common cause, Arthur Compton, the Manhattan Project director in Chicago, said. The Manhattan Project did create opportunities for Black Americans' advancements, but many Black workers grappled with Jim Crow segregation. Many Black scientists involved in the Manhattan Project went on to build careers that advanced technology and expanded opportunities for other Black scientists.

CNN —As an unrelenting heat wave enters its 39th consecutive day, millions of people from California to Florida are asking: When will it end? El Paso, Texas, has been in the triple digits for 32 consecutive days. In Miami, the record warm sea surface temperatures, combined with light winds are causing stifling heat: The heat index there topped 100 degrees or more for a record 37 consecutive days. The heat will remain until a shift in the weather pattern occurs and either breaks apart the heat dome or moves it out of the country completely. CNN —Over the ridge of the mountain, across the border was the promised land, the neutral territory Spain – an escape, a second chance, a future. During World War II, a perilous route through the Pyrenees mountains provided a means for hundreds of thousands of resistance fighters, civilians, Jews, allied soldiers and escaped prisoners of war to evade Nazi pursuers. Sitting down with them, Tim reflected on how this human drama played out against the backdrop of America’s role in bringing an end to World War II. Born July 9, 1923, he made his escape over the Pyrenees in July of 1944. Although Franco was sympathetic to Germany, Spain remained neutral during World War II, largely because of its dependence on US imports.

In August 1945, the US used atomic bombs on Japan, killing over 100,000 people. Truman didn't actually see the petition before he ordered the bombs to drop, according to the Atomic Heritage Foundation. The liberation of the atomic power which has been achieved places atomic bombs in the hands of the Army. All the resources of the United States, moral and material, may have to be mobilized to prevent the advent of such a world situation.
