CNN —Rudy Giuliani has failed to pay more than $132,000 in sanctions he faces for failing to respond to parts of a lawsuit from two Georgia election workers, according to a court filing. Giuliani has struggled to pay legal bills in recent months, including related to the lawsuit from Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, a mother and daughter he defamed. Giuliani lost the defamation lawsuit in August from the two Georgia election workers against him after he failed to provide information sought in subpoenas. In court in recent weeks, Giuliani said he could no longer contest that he made false and defamatory statements about Freeman and Moss. CNN —Rudy Giuliani has filed a new legal challenge against the criminal charges he’s facing in Georgia over his attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election. And he faces defamation suits from Dominion and Smartmatic, voting technology companies that he falsely said rigged the 2020 election. In a separate case, a judge ruled that he defamed two Georgia election workers, and a jury will decide what he owes damages. Georgia election workers want another $100,000 in attorneys’ feesThe Georgia election workers who won a defamation lawsuit against Giuliani for his bogus fraud claims in the 2020 election say they are entitled to another $104,000 in attorneys’ fees stemming from the discovery disputes that arose in the case. CNN —The sale of over 400 pieces of jewelry once owned by late art collector Heidi Horten broke records at a series of auctions earlier this year. But amid ongoing criticism from Jewish advocacy groups and human rights organizations over the source of the Austrian billionaire’s wealth, Christie’s auction house announced Thursday that it has canceled the final part of the controversial sale. (Christie’s had initially predicted that Horten’s entire collection, featuring over 700 jewels, would sell for over $150 million.) Prior to May’s sales, the American Jewish Committee had called for the auction to be put on hold until “a serious effort” was made to investigate the Hortens’ wealth. The Heidi Horten Collection did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

CNN —It turns out that there is a heavy price for trying to steal votes, defaming defenseless election workers and invading the US Capitol to try to thwart a democratic transfer of presidential power. A lawyer for the two election workers vowed on CNN to pursue accountability “to the end of the Earth” in a damages trial. While Trump claims such cases are an example of a “witch hunt,” the judicial process is grinding slowly on. Yet no democracy would last long if it failed to respond to the alleged crimes committed by Trump and his acolytes after the 2020 election. Michael Gottlieb, an attorney for the election workers, said he expected that his clients would see restitution after a trial date for damages between November and February.

CNN —A federal judge has determined Rudy Giuliani forfeits the defamation lawsuit from two Georgia election workers against him, a decision that could lead to significant penalties for the former Donald Trump attorney. Giuliani has been struggling financially, buried under 2020 election legal proceedings, a new criminal case against him in Georgia related to efforts to overturn the election and other matters. He has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges in Georgia and has been released from jail on bond. Late last month, Giuliani conceded that he made defamatory statements about Freeman and Moss and that he didn’t contest their accusations that he had smeared them after the 2020 election. Georgia election officials have debunked Giuliani’s accusations of fraud during the ballot counting.

A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that Rudolph W. Giuliani was liable for defaming two Georgia election workers by repeatedly declaring that they had mishandled ballots while counting votes in Atlanta during the 2020 election. A lawyer for Mr. Giuliani declined to comment. Judge Howell’s decision came a little more than a month after Mr. Giuliani conceded in two stipulations in the case that he had made false statements when he accused the election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, of manipulating ballots while working at the State Farm Arena for the Fulton County Board of Elections. Mr. Giuliani later sought to explain that his stipulations were solely meant to get past a dispute with Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss about discovery evidence in the case and move toward dismissing the allegations outright. But Judge Howell, complaining that Mr. Giuliani’s stipulations “hold more holes than Swiss cheese,” took the proactive step of declaring him liable for “defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy and punitive damage claims.”

Howell blasted Giuliani for "willful ... misconduct," and "slippery" statements in failing to turn over the requested information as part of the legal process known as discovery. A federal judge on Wednesday issued a default judgment against former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and ordered him to pay sanctions of nearly $133,000 in a civil conspiracy lawsuit by two Georgia election workers he had claimed mishandled ballots in the 2020 presidential contest. The women had sued Giuliani in 2021 with claims of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil conspiracy. "Given the willful shirking of his discovery obligations in anticipation of andduring this litigation, Giuliani leaves little other choice," Howell wrote. Howell also ordered Giuliani to compel two of his companies to pay another $43,684 to the women for the same conduct.

A judge set bond Tuesday for the only defendant in the Georgia election interference case who was jailed after surrendering to authorities last week. All of the other defendants, including Trump, were released last week on bond after they were booked. Richardson also cited a pending case for Floyd, in which he allegedly assaulted a federal officer this year, as among the reasons she denied his bond request. Prosecutors in the Georgia case have accused Floyd, the former leader of Black Voices for Trump, of involvement in a scheme to pressure election worker Ruby Freeman into making false statements. Trump and other co-defendants in the case are scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 6, though some have waived formal arraignments and already pleaded not guilty.

It ultimately fizzes out, but “Bottoms” confirms that Seligman and Sennott are major new forces in American comedy. A lot does click here, including several delicious supporting performances, most notably the former N.F.L. running back Marshawn Lynch as the fight club’s loopy faculty adviser and Ruby Cruz as Hazel, a cool classmate whom, naturally, PJ does not even see. For most of its tight running time, “Bottoms” hovers on the cusp of greatness. BottomsRated R for typical teen language, fight-club violence and football run amok.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.
