Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' fund to support homeless families announced $117 million in new grants on Tuesday to organizations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, which is a part of a $2 billion commitment Bezos made in 2018 to support homeless families and to run free preschools. That brings the amount granted by the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund to benefit homeless families to almost $640 million. The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte received a second grant this year after first being awarded $5 million by the fund in 2018. The Bezos Day 1 Families Fund did not give a timeframe for when the pledged $2 billion would be distributed or what portion would go to homeless families. Last year, Bezos gave away $122.2 million and has pledged around $12.8 billion in charitable donations, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The social pillar of the environmental, social and corporate governance investing framework — known as ESG in short — has been dubbed the "middle child" largely due to data challenges. For years, the social pillar has been considered relatively nebulous and hard to quantify. And it comes despite the fact that the ESG investing framework has found itself in hot water politically. In these cases, she said the social pillar comes into play in ensuring a carbon transition is equitable and just. A fraught environmentGlobally, it appears social themes will become more clear and important to investors over time.

Between June 2018 and December 2021 there was a 25% tax imposed on the spirit, which decreased American whiskey exports by 18%. American whiskey exports to the EU jumped 118% in the first half of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2022. They went back and forth until 2021 when the tariffs on American whiskey were suspended and we took a great sigh of relief. The Biden administration’s leadership and efforts on this have enabled the suspension of tariffs on American whiskey and all distilled spirits products, but we are rightly anxious because a 50% tariff on American whiskey would be beyond devastating to exports. Since those tariffs have been suspended, we’ve seen American whiskey exports rebound to beyond pre-pandemic levels.

Despite the hubbub, essentially none of the center's funders have raised public concerns about its work. But tell us how you’re going to puzzle through.”The sudden termination of the center’s research projects prompted some within the movement for racial justice to see good reason to criticize Kendi’s leadership. Kendi agreed many funders were new to racial justice philanthropy in 2020, but said they didn’t usually give to his center. Organizers say it is the first Jewish alumni association in the history of the university. Harvard President Gay wrote a letter to members of the larger Harvard community addressing the tensions on Thursday. While a large chunk of university donations come from big gifts, small donations from alumni are becoming an increasingly important source of funding for higher education, according to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Universities like to tout the high number of donations they receive to show that they have an engaged alumni base, said CASE. More than 300 Cooper Union alumni also recently threatened to end donations over the New York school’s response to anti-Israel protests.

That was the vision of Joan Kroc, billionaire philanthropist and heiress to the McDonald’s fortune of her husband, Ray. And today, 20 years later, 26 grand, state-of-the-art Kroc centers have opened in places as varied as Ashland, Ohio; Guayama, Puerto Rico; and Quincy, Illinois. Half was to be earmarked for the construction of recreation centers, with the other half deposited into endowments to support them. In the two decades since Kroc’s bequest, quantifying the precise impact on all of the communities served by the Kroc centers is difficult. She explained that Joan Kroc meant for the place to be accessible to all — that beauty was part of her plan.

Boston University said Tuesday that its initial inquiry into the antiracist research center run by best-selling author and academic Ibram X. Kendi found no issues with how it managed its finances. The university launched the inquiry into the financials of the BU Center for Antiracist Research, or CAR, in September, after acknowledging the organization was laying off about half of its staff and changing its operating model. The center has raised more than $50 million, with $30 million of that put into an endowment, the university said. The university's inquiry will continue, now focusing on the center's management of grants from outside funders, including the extent to which it complied with required reporting. The university's inquiry and finding announced Tuesday aimed to address those questions, though the university declined a request to share the audit.

CNN —American YouTuber MrBeast’s latest video, in which he says he built 100 wells across Africa, has drawn a complex response online since it was published on Saturday. Some Kenyan activists and journalists said he has spotlighted the failures of the Kenyan government, while MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, anticipates that he will be “canceled” following the reaction. The new wells will provide clean drinking water for up to 500,000 people in Cameroon, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, Donaldson said, while an accompanying fundraiser to support local water aid organizations had raised more than $300,000 by Monday morning. Donaldson is the most popular individual creator on YouTube, with more than 200 million subscribers. Summer Science Program, a nonprofit with an annual budget of about $2 million, sent about 200 high school juniors to six-week intensive research courses at universities this year. Summer Science Program learned last year that one of its alumni, Franklin Antonio, a co-founder of chipmaker Qualcomm, had granted the organization 20% of his estate, said CEO Frank Steslow. The program intends to double the number of students enrolled next summer to more than 400 and increased its annual budget to over $7 million. Summer Science Program has already received a first payment of $65 million, and the funds are unrestricted. But he added, “it seems unusual at first until you realize that the organization itself is almost like a gift restriction, because they’re very specific in what they do,” referring to Summer Science Program.

Among those who received a basic income in Stockton, California, the unemployment rate dropped by nearly 50%. With more data at hand than theoretical projection, the evidence is overwhelming: Universal basic income is working nearly universally. Promising as these pilot programs are, the chances of a truly universal basic income in America remain remote. As for Tydricka Lewis, basic income afforded her the latitude to start her own nonprofit.
