Can you can leave your estate to your pet?
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Alexandra Peers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Some people really do leave money to their pets. Estate attorneys told CNN they’re seeing more incidences of people making financial plans for their pets after they die. Twenty-nine states have enacted pet trust laws since 2008, and now every state, plus Washington, DC, has some form of guidelines, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, if a person names a guardian for their pet, they can leave money and property to that person. dpa/picture alliance/Eventpress/SipaFlorida attorney Peggy Hoyt, author of “All My Children Wear Fur Coats,” told CNN she urges her clients to leave comprehensive instructions for pet caretakers.

During Tuesday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants “are eating dogs and cats … eating people’s pets” in Springfield, Ohio. “The fact that Donald Trump wants to double down on something so ridiculous just breaks my heart again,” Smith said. The rumor follows years of insults hurled at Haitians and Haitian Americans, including unfounded claims of cannibalism, and Trump’s hostility toward Haitian immigrants during his administration. “I work every day with Haitian immigrants, and no one works as hard as them,” he said. “It’s really unreal.”On social media, Haitians have expressed disgust about the depiction, while others “won’t even entertain something so crazy,” Smith said.

Those rapidly growing areas are poised to drive a rebound in China's anemic consumer spending, Bank of America analysts say. China's pet economy is seeing outsize spending as pets come to occupy a greater place of prominence in households. Finally, the analysts see significant growth potential in the country's "cultural IP" economy — spending on books, movies, and experiences based on fictional characters or storylines. Michigan and Wisconsin are looking like the best of the bunch for Harris, according to the campaign’s internal numbers. As pumped as Harris aides are about her debate performance earlier this week, they don’t think it changed any of that. “There’s a quiet confidence and security in what we’re doing and the mission, but no one thinks we have this in the bag,” said a Harris campaign aide. We’ll definitely be having some fun,” an Obama aide told CNN. The former president will kick off his work at a fundraiser he’s hosting for Harris next week in Los Angeles.

After Tuesday’s onstage meeting, Harris had said that she and her opponent owed it to voters to debate again. Harris’ senior campaign adviser, David Plouffe, blasted Trump on X as “chicken man.”The Republican nominee often changes his mind. He asked, “Wasn’t ‘The Apprentice’ a great show, though?” and wistfully reminisced about the final night of his election campaign in 2016. Will Trump stick to his refusal to debate Harris again? But Bryan Lanza, a senior Trump campaign advisor, insisted that this was a tactical decision.

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday slammed Donald Trump’s association with right-wing conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who has become an increasing presence alongside the former president as he seeks a second term. “No leader should ever associate with someone who spreads this kind of ugliness, this kind of racist poison,” Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing. SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio town at the center of a culture war over debunked claims about Haitian migrants was forced to close its City Hall on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the city announced on its website and social media channels. The bomb threat "was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield,” the city said. The city’s mayor, Rob Rue, indicated Thursday that the threat included complaints about Haitian migrants in the city, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Springfield has recently been thrust into the national political culture war as conservative influencers and Republican politicians have repeated a debunked claim that immigrants from Haiti have been stealing and eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats," he said.

By 2030, the number of pets in urban China alone will almost double the number of young children across the country, according to its projection. Standing near them was another figure whose sway with the Republican nominee also cannot be discounted: the far-right provocateur Laura Loomer. Her anti-Muslim social media posts eventually earned her a ban from Twitter that lasted until billionaire Elon Musk bought the website, now known as X, and restored her account. She knows his personal number and has utilized it, one source familiar with the relationship told CNN. When Trump landed in Philadelphia on Tuesday before his debate against Harris, Loomer was among the close allies seen deboarding his private plane. In August of last year, Trump even suggested the campaign hire Loomer for an official role, sources told CNN at the time.

New York CNN —The Republican nominee for president went on live TV and presented an unhinged, debunked Facebook rumor as fact. Scrolling on Facebook or X, it’s hard not to see some of that chaos creeping into the mainstream.
