A recall of Boar's Head products has expanded to include a whopping 7 million additional pounds of deli and poultry items in a deadly multistate outbreak of listeria infections. As of Tuesday, 34 people have gotten sick across 13 states in the outbreak — including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. Last week, the deli meat company had recalled more than 207,000 pounds of deli meat, including liverwurst and ham products, because they may contain the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Boar's Head has now expanded that recall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in a press release Tuesday. Boar's Head said in a statement on its website that it had initiated the recall after a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health had tested positive for listeria.

The newly FDA approved Alzheimer's treatment Leqembi is prepared at Abington Neurological Associates in Abington, PA., on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The breakthrough Alzheimer's drug Leqembi slowed disease progression in patients over three years, demonstrating the need for them to stay on the treatment long term, according to new data released Tuesday by Japanese drugmaker Eisai. The study results on Leqembi, which Eisai shares with Biogen , also found that a patient's Alzheimer's disease worsens after they stop treatment. The results are a first glimpse at what Alzheimer's patients' future could look like on therapies such as Leqembi, which is currently taken twice a month through an infusion. By 2050, the number of Alzheimer's patients is projected to rise to almost 13 million in the U.S.

“This is the first study that actually looked at a relatively large number of patients for whether there is any neuroprotective effect in Alzheimer’s disease,” Edison said. The trial enrolled predominantly people with mild Alzheimer’s disease, measured by a test known as the Mini-Mental State Examination, a scale that goes up to 30. The GLP-1 drug class also includes Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound, which use the active ingredient tirzepatide, which mimics not just the hormone GLP-1 but another called GIP. But it hasn’t announced any trials of its GLP-1 drugs in Alzheimer’s. GLP-1 drugs can have side effects, though, primarily gastrointestinal problems like nausea and vomiting.

Neurotech startup Synchron on Tuesday announced it has connected its brain implant to Apple 's Vision Pro headset. Apple released the Vision Pro earlier this year, and users typically control it with eye movements, voice commands and hand gestures. He said Synchron will likely work to connect its BCI to other headsets, but it's starting with the Vision Pro. Apple has been "very supportive" of the Vision Pro integration, he added. Synchron is a part of an increasingly competitive BCI industry, and the company said Tuesday that it is the first to connect its system to Apple's Vision Pro.

Market pricing currently indicates an absolute certainty that the Fed will approve its first reduction in more than four years — when it meets Sept. 17-18. They don't want investors to start pricing in a rate cut coming in September and there's literally nothing else that could possibly happen," he said. "Opening the door for that rate cut is probably the most appropriate thing for them at this point," Reynolds added. Expectations for easingGlenmede expects that starting in September, the Fed could cut at each of the three remaining meetings. Today, a group of dementia researchers from the UK released some early results that suggest it's possible these trendy injections might also stall the progression of dementia. A daily injection for brain preservationIuliia Burmistrova/Getty ImagesFor the study, researchers spent a year tracking brain changes across 204 Alzheimer's patients with mild to moderate disease. "It sounds like it is worth pursuing a larger trial, but these results cannot demonstrate that liraglutide can protect against dementia." Experts have seen how dementia patients' brains get worse and worse at efficiently using glucose for energy as their disease progresses, but the calculus is always complicated. George Frey | ReutersAn older, once-daily drug for diabetes and obesity from Novo Nordisk called liraglutide may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by protecting patients' brains, according to data from a mid-stage trial released on Tuesday. Novo Nordisk sells liraglutide as a diabetes and obesity drug under the brand names Victoza and Saxenda, respectively. Alzheimer's disease often causes the brain to shrink as the illness progresses because crucial nerve cells break down and stop working properly. By 2050, the number of Alzheimer's patients is projected to rise to almost 13 million in the U.S. The ongoing EVOKE is examining semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, in nearly 2,000 Alzheimer's patients.

Instead, a series of negotiations led to an eventual compromise decision limiting the Idaho law and temporarily forestalling further limits on abortion access from the high court. This exclusive series on the Supreme Court is based on CNN sources inside and outside the court with knowledge of the deliberations. The Idaho law had exemptions only to prevent death of the pregnant woman and in instances of rape or incest. It issued formal guidance saying the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires stabilizing treatment regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, would preempt any state abortion ban in situations when an emergency termination was needed. Idaho lost in an initial proceeding in a US district court, as a judge issued a temporary injunction against the abortion ban.

But experts emphasize that much more research is needed before using the medications off-label for smoking cessation. In a study published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers tracked the medical records of more than 200,000 people who started medications to treat type 2 diabetes, including nearly 6,000 people using semaglutide medications such as Ozempic. Over the course of a year, people who started using semaglutide were significantly less likely to have medical encounters for tobacco use disorders, prescriptions for medications for smoking cessation or counseling for smoking cessation than those who started other diabetes medications such as insulin and metformin. “A signal like this one cannot be ignored, particularly because of how consequential it could be if, in fact, we can have now a new medication for treating smoking cessation,” she said. But fewer than 1 in 10 adult cigarette smokers succeed in quitting each year, according to the new study, and options for smoking cessation treatment haven’t changed much in decades.

But as tech firms plan to invest billions of dollars in generative AI technologies, there's been another explanation for job cuts. While there's been a mountain of speculation about if and when AI technologies like ChatGPT could displace workers, their near-term impact on job losses could be less about job replacement and more about the cost of AI investments.
