Nobody knows what Netanyahu’s endgame is

The Israeli military has already withdrawn from the area twice after saying, both times, that it had crushed Hamas there. A drone fired over the weekend slipped through Israeli air defenses and struck Netanyahu’s beach house some 50 miles from the Lebanese border. Netanyahu’s reluctance to strike a ceasefire deal, even now after securing several military victories, has angered many in Israel. “Ending the Gaza war and the Lebanon war is not an option for his political partners in the coalition. CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Should a peace agreement be reached in the conflict, either the Russian assets will stay frozen and generate interest to repay the loans until they’re repaid, or Russia will pay for the damage it has caused.

Major League Soccer scored several regular season records, including for attendance and sponsorship, thanks in part to international superstar Lionel Messi — and corporate strategy. Each match during the 2024 season averaged 23,234 attendees, the highest ever for the regular season. Last year, the MLS’s Inter Miami signed Messi, which caused a surge in attendance, jersey and other product sales, and overall fanbase engagement. The league signed 18 new sponsorship partners this season between the MLS and Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the commercial arm of the MLS. Viewership data isn’t available for MLS Season Pass, but Apple executives have said on public calls that the audience has risen since Messi joined the league.

Consistent with U.S. policy, Harris has also declined to say whether she would use military force to defend Taiwan. Instead she emphasizes the importance of military communications with China and supporting Taiwan’s ability to defend itself. Tariff talkThough Trump talks far more about China on the campaign trail than Harris does, neither of them have said much about how they would manage ties with Beijing. Biden has maintained and in some cases expanded tariffs on Chinese imports that Trump introduced as president, citing national security concerns. If she wins, Harris is expected to continue Biden’s targeted tariffs and restrictions on key Chinese tech sectors.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Al Meer (center) and Qatar Tourism Chairman Saad bin Ali Al Kharji (left) speak with Elon Musk (right) via Starlink on board the flight. Qatar Airways launched Tuesday its inaugural Boeing 777 flight equipped with Elon Musk's Starlink internet, paving the way for a new era of in-flight connectivity across its entire fleet by next year. To demonstrate the milestone, Qatar Airways CEO Badr Al Meer held a video call with Starlink founder Musk while flying at 35,000 feet from Doha to London. Qatar Airways' move to introduce free high-speed internet across its fleet is a direct challenge to competitor airlines who typically offer lower-speed and often patchy paid services, or status-restricted wi-fi access to the flying public. Over time I think you'll find it just gets better and better," Musk said before Al Meer gave him a video tour of the cockpit.

CNN —More than 100 soccer players from the women’s game have signed an open letter to FIFA, urging the sport’s world governing body to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi oil and gas company Aramco. In April this year, FIFA announced a four-year global partnership with the majority state-owned oil giant, giving it sponsorship rights to the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup. “The Saudi authorities trample not only on the rights of women, but on the freedom of all other citizens too,” the letter, addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, said. Last year, it produced an average of 12.8 million barrels of oil a day, far more than any other company. US oil and gas companies combined, however, produce more than Saudi Arabia, according to a 2023 analysis from the US Energy Information Administration.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv early Monday morning, as the future of US aid to Ukraine hangs in the balance of the imminent US presidential election and as Russia continues to make small but steady gains on the battlefield. “It’s been absolutely remarkable that Ukraine has been able to do what it’s done,” Austin told reporters. Ukraine has prevented Russian President Vladimir Putin from achieving “one single strategic objective” during the war, Austin said Sunday. China also continues to be a “critical enabler” of Russia’s war effort, the NATO official said. Ukraine has more sophisticated weaponry thanks to the West, which could give the country a strategic edge, the defense official said.

The FBI is leading the investigation, working with Pentagon investigators and the intelligence community, according to US officials briefed on the matter. In recent days, investigators have worked to authenticate the documents and determine who could have had access to them, the officials said. Both documents were widely accessible products, according to two sources familiar with US intelligence. That could provide investigators with a critical jumping-off point: The Defense Department, like other federal agencies, tracks when employees print classified documents. Highlighting the sensitive nature of the leak, American officials were extremely tight-lipped about the investigation on Monday.

Bitcoin at 3-month high as Trump odds drive currencies
  + stars: | 2024-10-21 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Cryptocurrency bitcoin hit a three-month high in early Asia trading on Monday and the dollar looked set to extend its gains in markets counting down to the U.S. presidential election in two weeks. Bitcoin got a lift from Trump's improving prospects since his administration is seen as taking a softer line on cryptocurrency regulation. The clearest way to express the Trump tariff risk was to be long dollars versus the euro, Swiss franc and Mexican peso , he said. Brad Bechtel, global head of FX at Jefferies, also noted that rising real interest rates were helping the dollar along, particularly against those three currencies. "We expect this trend to continue straight into the election and if Trump wins, likely well after the election as well," Bechtel wrote.

New York CNN —Rupert Murdoch’s Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post sued Perplexity on Monday, accusing the generative AI company of illegally scraping its reporting and diverting traffic to its own platforms. The News Corp-owned companies accused Perplexity of training its so-called answer machine with copyrighted material, using scraped human-created news content to generate responses to users’ questions, allowing them to circumvent the publishers’ websites. “Perplexity proudly states that users can ‘skip the links’ — apparently, Perplexity wants to skip the check.”A Perplexity spokesperson did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. Earlier this year, News Corp inked a massive deal with ChatGPT creator OpenAI, licensing its news content in an agreement reported to be worth more than $250 million. The Times also sued OpenAI last year for copyright infringement, accusing the company of using its reporting to train its chatbots without permission, claiming billions of dollars in damages.

BuyBuy Baby is closing all of its stores – again
  + stars: | 2024-10-21 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —BuyBuy Baby is once again saying goodbye to its stores less than a year after the bankrupt retailer tried to reopen some locations under a new parent. Baby registries will also remain available on BuyBuy Baby’s website, as well as the usage of gift cards. The brick-and-mortar resurrection of BuyBuy Baby, which once had as many as 120 locations across the United States, lasted less than 12 months. However, BuyBuy Baby dealt with a hesitant consumer, squeezed both by inflationary pressures and larger rivals, like Amazon and Target, that have a tight grip on the sector. Perhaps in an ironic twist, former sister brand Bed Bath & Beyond announced last week it was returning to stores, albeit in a partnership with former rival the Container Store.
