That's despite respondents from both countries taking the most vacation days — 27 days and 29 days, respectively — in the survey. However, only 53% of Japanese said they feel "vacation deprived" compared to 65% of Americans, it showed. Expedia's report indicates that feeling "vacation deprived" has less to do with the actual time off one takes, and more to do with cultural mores around work and free time. Wasted vacation daysDespite most workers indicating they feel vacation deprived, respondents from nearly every location admitted to letting some of their annual leave lapse. "In 2024, 15% of Hong Kongers plan on taking 31 vacation days, exceeding the average allotted 25.5 days," said Hudson.

New York CNN —The parent company of Redbox, those distinctive, red-colored kiosks at grocery stores that sell or rent DVDs, has filed for bankruptcy after enduring months of financial struggle. Filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy could help the company fix those issues if its plans are approved by a court in Delaware. The company’s publishing arm, which produces those ubiquitous self-help books that were once a worldwide phenomenon, isn’t affected by the bankruptcy filing of its entertainment unit. The number of Redbox kiosks has grown to about 34,000 across the US, largely located at grocery and drug stores. Since its 2002 launch, Redbox has rented its 1 billion discs at prices cheaper than cable, according to its website.

At the heart of the plan is Starbucks' "Siren Craft System," a series of processes that aim to make baristas' jobs easier and speed up service times for customers. Starbucks said more than 10% of its 10,000 stores have already implemented the system, which includes changing the production order for hot and cold drinks. Starbucks reported rates of incomplete mobile app orders in the mid-teens and said occasional customers came in less. Losing customers because of slow orders and other store frustrations could cost Starbucks at a particularly vulnerable time. The company plans to train existing workers for the role or potentially add new baristas, if needed.

The legal roller coaster for millions of student-loan borrowers on President Joe Biden's new repayment plan continues. A court ruled that borrowers on the SAVE income-driven repayment plan can get the new benefits set to go into effect in July, like lower payments, for the time being after a legal challenges blocked their implementation. The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the stay. This means that for now, the Education Department can continue working to implement the new SAVE provisions set to go into effect this July. For now, borrowers continue to await further guidance from the Education Department.

US President Joe Biden gestures after speaking about student loan debt relief at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, April 8, 2024. A federal appeals court will allow a key part of President Joe Biden's student loan relief plan to resume as the legal challenges against it unfold. The SAVE plan was his biggest accomplishment to date in delivering relief to student loan borrowers. Last week, just as the Biden administration prepared to lower borrowers' monthly payments under the SAVE plan, a federal judge in Kansas issued an injunction blocking it from doing so. The appeals court ruling will allow the Biden administration to go ahead with lowering borrowers' monthly payments.

Unlike the more popular fixed-rate mortgage loans, ARMs can offer temporary relief for homebuyers who want to avoid paying higher mortgage rates — however, they also come with risk. That means when mortgage rates increase, many ARM loan holders, like Hernandez, experience the unpleasant shock of significantly higher monthly home payments. Mortgage rates have remained elevated, adding fuel to one of the most unaffordable housing markets in decades. To Hernandez, it made little sense to refinance the loan while the 30-year fixed mortgage rate remains higher than her new adjusted rate. Marquis said that taking out an ARM loan might be worthwhile for those with a higher risk appetite.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and IRS on Friday released final tax reporting rules for digital asset brokers — and crypto investors have limited time to prepare, experts say. Mandatory yearly reporting will phase in starting in 2026, with digital currency brokers required to cover gross proceeds from sales in 2025 via Form 1099-DA. In 2027, brokers must include cost basis, or purchase price, for certain digital asset sales for 2026. "These regulations are an important part of the larger effort on high-income individual tax compliance," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. The new IRS regulations come roughly four months after the agency hired two former crypto executives to improve digital currency service, reporting, compliance and enforcement programs.

The 30-year-old high jumper cleared 1.89 meters at the Ukrainian Athletics Championships on Sunday, not enough to qualify for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris. Many athletes have moved abroad in order to continue their careers and train for this year’s Games. This means that teams of Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be considered, while athletes who actively support the war against Ukraine will also be ineligible. No reference to either country will be made at the Games through the athletes’ participation, such as flags, anthems or national colors. “We’re not friends, we’re not competitors,” Ryzhykova told CNN about facing Russian and Belarusian athletes.

Ukraine’s security service said on Monday that it had foiled yet another Russian plot to stir public unrest and then use the ensuing turmoil to topple the government, outlining a familiar tactic that Kyiv claims has been employed in string of coup attempts in recent years. Four people have been arrested and charged, according to the authorities. While offering little detail on how such an ambitious plan could have succeeded, officials said it was a reminder that more than two years after launching a full-scale invasion of the country, the Kremlin remained determined to bring down President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government by any means. On the battlefield, Russia continues to send tens of thousands of new soldiers to the front to replace those killed in the hopes of exhausting Ukraine’s military and Kyiv’s Western backers. At the same time, Russia’s relentless bombardment of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure is designed, in part, to throttle the economy and undermine the state’s ability to function.

Chewy shares started swinging wildly after online personality Roaring Kitty revealed a big stake , but Wall Street analysts believe being branded as a meme stock is not good for the pet retailer. The meme stock leader, whose legal name is Keith Gill, has taken a 6.6% stake in Chewy, making him the third-largest shareholder. An initial boost in the share price — it surged 18% in two days early last week — has quickly faded, with shares falling more than 5% Monday. Many believe BC could use any rally in Chewy stock to sell more of its stake, putting a temporary ceiling on the shares. The dynamic could be at play Monday as Chewy's stock opened 9% higher, only to quickly give up all the gains and turn lower.

When Meta introduced a subscription option last year that would allow users in the European Union to pay for an advertising-free experience of Instagram and Facebook, it was meant to fix regulatory problems the company faced in the region. Meta introduced the subscription last year as a way to address regulatory and legal scrutiny of its advertising-based business model. Meta argued that by offering a subscription, users had a fair alternative. But regulators on Monday said the system was no choice at all, forcing users to pay for privacy. The authorities said Meta’s policy violated the Digital Markets Act, a new law aimed at reining in the power of the biggest tech companies.
