A New York judge fined Donald Trump's family business the maximum penalty of $1.6 million for committing tax fraud. “[Trump] has largely been absent from the New York market for a long time,” he said.

During four hours of testimony in a Manhattan courtroom today, Donald Trump repeatedly attacked the judge overseeing the trial and defended himself against accusations of fraudulently misvaluing his properties. On the witness stand, the former president acknowledged helping assemble documents stating the value of his properties, which a judge had already decided were filled with fraud and which are central to the New York attorney general’s lawsuit against him. But he denied being involved in undervaluations and insisted that the financial statements were ultimately of little importance. The judge in the case, Justice Arthur Engoron, became frustrated as he repeatedly sought to rein in Trump, whose asides included proclaiming the proceeding was “a very unfair trial” and calling the New York attorney general “a political hack.” At one point, Trump complained that the judge had “called me a fraud and he didn’t know anything about me.”What’s next: Ivanka Trump will testify on Wednesday. What’s at stake: New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, who brought the case, has asked that Trump pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in the state.

But the fact that he is the overwhelming favorite to run the GOP, it makes this a staggering Monday,” said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley. Trump once took the stand — unexpectedly and briefly — after he was accused of violating a partial gag order. “My intent is to attend Donald’s appearance as he was gracious enough to attend my court appearances,” he said. Eric Trump, the former president's middle son, who testified in the case last week, said his father was eager for his appearance on the stand. The judge eventually ruled in Roosevelt's favor after a five week trial, in which the former president spent eight days on the witness stand.

Just 30 minutes after Trump was sworn in, Judge Arthur Engoron – frustrated by the former president’s non-answers – turned to the former president’s defense team for help. Trump is known for being long-winded and talking around an issue instead of answering questions directly. “This is not a political rally.”But Trump’s two lead attorneys, Chris Kise and Alina Habba, did little to help. “This is a very unfair trial,” Trump said from the witness stand. NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has testified in court as a football owner, casino builder and airline buyer. Trump has testified in court in at least eight trials since 1986, according to an Associated Press review of court records and news coverage. They show clear parallels between Trump as a witness and Trump as a president and current candidate for the office. Trump testified that his $365 million purchase, later approved, would be a “major boost in morale” for employees. In his April deposition, Trump soberly described the presidency as the “most important job in the world” before bragging about saving lives by preventing North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un from launching a nuclear attack.

CNN —Ivanka Trump on Friday withdrew her appeal of a judge’s order requiring her to testify at her father’s civil fraud trial next week after an appellate court refused to pause her testimony. Ivanka Trump’s testimony comes after she was previously dismissed as a co-defendant in the New York case against former President Donald Trump, two of his adult sons and his company. On Thursday night, an appeals court denied Ivanka Trump’s request to postpone her testimony until her lawyers could make arguments before the panel that she shouldn’t be required to appear. Ivanka Trump’s brothers, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, appeared in court this week. The civil trial began in October, soon after Engoron found in September that Trump and his co-defendants were liable for “persistent and repeated” fraud.

CNN —A higher court on Thursday denied Ivanka Trump’s request to postpone her upcoming testimony in her father’s civil fraud trial, shortly after she claimed she’d suffer “undue hardship” if forced to appear during a school week. With the appeal, Trump sought to block New York Judge Arthur Engoron’s previous order for her to testify until an appeal could be heard by the New York appellate court. The appeal also asked the court to pause the entire fraud trial against former President Donald Trump, two of his adult sons and his company until her appeal could be heard. Ivanka Trump’s two adult brothers – Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – made back-to-back appearances in court earlier Thursday. Johnson, who played a leading role in the effort to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, benefited in his ascent to the speakership last week from the approval of pro-Trump lawmakers. His tortured explanations of his constitutionality correct decision – that he lacked power to overturn Biden’s 2020 election win in Congress – failed to convince grassroots Republicans bought into the ex-president’s false claims that he won the election. An alternative lesson that the ex-president’s rivals might draw is that forceful condemnations of Trump’s 2020 election denialism are likely to be fatal to their campaigns. There was evidence last week that Johnson’s maneuvering after the 2020 election helped secure his rise to the speakership. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, for example, said that Emmer’s vote to certify the 2020 election “played a big role” in her vote against him.

A federal judge reimposed a gag order on Donald Trump in his criminal election interference case, rejecting Trump's arguments that the restrictions on his speech were unconstitutional. Trump called Barr "dumb" and "weak" and a "loser," in response to Barr's remarks at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics last week. A spokesman for special counsel Jack Smith, whose team is prosecuting the case, declined to comment on whether Trump's latest attack on Barr violated the gag order. Lawyers for Trump had asked for a longer stay of the gag order while they appealed it in a higher court. Trump has already violated that gag order twice, drawing a total of $15,000 in penalties.
