These forms of deep brain stimulation require a surgical procedure during which electrodes — which generate electrical impulses to control any abnormal brain activity — are implanted into certain areas of the brain. With enough advancement in the field, doctors expect brain stimulation techniques for both severe disorders and health-and-wellness purposes will ultimately become noninvasive. Three major players There are only three companies with FDA-approved deep brain stimulation, or DBS, treatments: Medtronic , Abbott Laboratories and Boston Scientific . The spinal cord stimulation, or SCS, business is a hotbed of innovation right now, deep brain stimulation also is a key area." There is still plenty of doubt, however, about the efficacy of at-home brain stimulation devices, which offer a less direct approach to brain stimulation and don't always require FDA oversight.

On Friday, the board of OpenAI, the buzzy AI company behind viral chatbot ChatGPT, suddenly and publicly ousted its CEO Sam Altman. OpenAI's board said it conducted "a deliberative review process" and that Altman "was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities." She is an adjunct senior management scientist at Rand Corporation and has been on the OpenAI board since 2018. "While our partnership with Microsoft includes a multibillion-dollar investment, OpenAI remains an entirely independent company governed by the OpenAI Nonprofit," OpenAI has publicly stated. On that day, Altman told Nadella, "I think we have the best partnership in tech and I'm excited for us to build AGI together."

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Clearly, the most left-leaning young adults have the lowest rating of Israel. The Arab American Institute commissioned John Zogby Strategies to conduct a survey of 500 Arab Americans between Oct. 23 and Oct. 27. In this poll, 32 percent of Arab Americans identified as Republican as opposed to just 23 percent who identified as Democrats.

The race to build AI as smart as humans, or AGI, looks like it suffered a major blow. Google researchers found the transformer technology behind AI isn't very good at generalizing. AdvertisementAdvertisementGoogle researchers may have just given a major reality check to the ambitions of CEOs in chase of AI's holy grail. As it stands, AI is pretty good at specific tasks but less great at transferring skills across domains like humans do. AdvertisementAdvertisementTransformers' opacity and the scale of the data they're pretrained on gave some the illusion that they generalize beyond it.

In a new study, Gauthier was surgically implanted with an experimental spinal cord neuroprosthesis to correct walking disorders in people with Parkinson’s disease. Marc Gauthier, 63, who has Parkinson's disease, was treated with a spinal cord neuroprosthesis for his locomotor symptoms. Then, Gauthier was invited to participate in the new study to test the experimental spinal cord neuroprosthesis. Next, they implanted an array of electrodes against the lower region of Gauthier’s spinal cord to target those zones. “With this spinal cord stimulation, we still have an effect, but we have to fight against worse and more severe symptoms,” Bloch said.

In 1990, Arm (NASDAQ: ARM), then a startup based in Cambridge, UK, filled the void with high-performance, power-efficient, and small form-factor processor technology for battery-run products. The processor architecture was so robust that AI functions could be built into the devices themselves – voice, touch, and facial recognition. Delivering the right compute, from cloud to edgeEnormous cloud data centers process most of the world's big AI workloads today because they can do so more efficiently at scale. Arm technology is also designed to follow and support AI workloads as they increasingly get distributed outside the cloud to edge devices. As the most pervasive CPU architecture ever, Arm is at the forefront of the AI/ML revolution, powering billions of devices from smartphones to cloud servers.

The U.N. last week created a 39-member advisory body to address issues in the international governance of AI. "We need to examine the landscape of existing governance responses across borders, and then see where the gaps are and how we can connect the governance responses together so that there are no gaps," Gill said. Gill, appointed by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres as tech envoy last year, is tasked with coordination across the U.N. on tech issues, ranging from AI to neural technologies. Guterres had in June backed a proposal by some AI executives for the creation of an international AI watchdog body like the International Atomic Energy Agency. The AI body, co-chaired by Spanish digital minister Carme Artigas and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) James Manyika, will have at least three in-person meetings and several virtual meetings.

Lab models of human embryos raise hopes and concerns

From the moment sperm fuses with an egg, human embryo development involves a string of complex and little understood processes. What happens during human embryo development, particularly in the crucial first month, remains largely unknown. However, 14 days is an important milestone because it is when permitted lab research on cultured human embryos routinely ends. He said, in the future, it might be possible to go as far as 40 days with human embryo models. Some in the field envision a “tipping point” wherein human embryo models might be afforded some protection like those surrounding human embryos, as scientific advances diminish the differences between the embryo models and their real-life counterparts.

Google Maps is expanding preexisting features and unveiling some new ones, according to a Thursday announcement. The company said artificial intelligence allowed for improvements to Google Maps' EV charging station feature, more specific recommendations of nearby activities and more in-depth visualization. New ways to search for things to doGoogle Maps is offering new ways for people to search for activities to do near them as well. Instead of getting a random list of activities near you, Google Maps will return a categorized list of activities grouped by topic. So, Google said, if you search for things to do in Tokyo, you will get responses such as "anime," "cherry blossoms" and "art exhibitions," and you can get more granular from there.

It's an old Silicon Valley philosophy packaged anew: Growth without guardrails. Silicon Valley enters the age of e/accAndreessen and other prominent Silicon Valley figures such as Y Combinator president Garry Tan have quietly added the term e/acc to their social media profiles. In his manifesto, Andreessen calls it "techno-optimism." To some extent, it's a repackaging of what Silicon Valley has always peddled — let us build, grow, and make money without limitations. "Techno-optimists believe growth is progress," Andreessen argues, adding that growth is driven by the progress of technology without hindrance.

George Hinton voiced some alarming concerns about AI in a "60 Minutes" interview. The AI "godfather" says the tech is learning better than humans — and has the potential to do bad. AdvertisementAdvertisementAll that AI is missing now, Hinton said, is the self-awareness to know how to use its intelligence to manipulate humans. They'll know how to do it"And of course, there's the concern of using AI to replace people in jobs, generate fake news, and unintended bias going undetected. He recently expressed regret for his role in advancing AI, but said on "60 Minutes" he had no regrets for the good it can do.

Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist known as a "Godfather of AI," says artificial intelligence-enhanced machines "might take over" if humans aren't careful. "One of the ways these systems might escape control is by writing their own computer code to modify themselves," said Hinton. Humans, including scientists like himself who helped build today's AI systems, still don't fully understand how the technology works and evolves, Hinton said. As Hinton described it, scientists design algorithms for AI systems to pull information from data sets, like the internet. Pichai and other AI experts don't seem nearly as concerned as Hinton about humans losing control.
