And airlines have made it chaotic by design — so people will pay to get an easier boarding process. Decades ago, airlines used to board first class and use an open boarding process for the main cabin. A better boarding processAirlines have been experimenting with different boarding schemes to try to speed up the process. Jason Steffen, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas physics professor developed a boarding method that boards passengers in rows of two. Southwest Airlines has the fastest boarding process of any major airline by simply allowing people to claim the first available seat.

It shifted all the blame to San Francisco,” American Eagle said in the complaint. American Eagle signed its lease with Westfield in 2017, and it expires in 2028. Once a bustling retail center in the heart of San Francisco, the San Francisco Centre has taken a significant hit in the past few years. San Francisco Mayor London Breed has proposed tearing down abandoned retail spaces, including the Westfield mall. As San Francisco’s downtown area has struggled over the last three years, property crimes and retail thefts have risen, according to San Francisco Police Department data.

But don’t worry if you missed out — falling ticket prices could make fall the better time to fly. Airfare to top international destinations will drop in the fall as well, with prices to Europe down 31% from summer peaks — nearly $330 off ticket prices. Known as “shoulder season,” airfare typically drops in the fall as demand cools off after the busy summer months. The three major US international airlines — American, Delta and United — all saw a surge in international traffic in recent months and added additional service to meet demand. One factor that could cause ticket prices to increase, however, is rising fuel prices.

The pay change did not apply to any existing employees. Walmart’s starting pay ranges from $14 to $19 depending on the store and local market. Walmart said it made the change so its starting pay was consistent across store jobs, whether workers were cashiers, shelf stockers or helped with online orders. “Consistent starting pay results in consistent staffing and better customer service,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. While Walmart reduced pay for future hires, it increased the pay scale for some existing employees.

New York CNN —LGBTQ dating app Grindr ended its remote work policies and forced employees to relocate. The CWA also said the return-to-work policy was retaliatory and in response to a union drive at the company. Just two weeks prior to Grindr’s policy change, a majority of employees filed to organize a union. “Rather than recognize the union, the company issued a new return-to-office policy requiring staff to relocate or quit,” the CWA said in a statement. Seventy-one percent of employers that are mandating their on-site work policy reported difficulty retaining workers, according to the survey.

CNN —US stocks typically see their worst performance of the year in September, but there are signs the market could avoid a steep downturn this time around. This month has been the worst for stocks on average since 1928, according to Yardeni Research. That’s partly because, much like August, there is a lull in economic data that could catalyze a stock rally. While stocks fell roughly 2% in August, they still outperformed their 4% loss during the same month last year. It’s the latest example of how extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, impacted major North American attractions this summer, reports my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn.

Ikea is opening a new store this week in downtown San Francisco at 945 Market Street. While violent crime statistics in San Francisco have remained relatively low in recent years, property crimes have risen since 2020, according to San Francisco Police Department data. In June, shopping mall operator Westfield announced it would give up control of its San Francisco mall, citing “challenging operating conditions in downtown San Francisco, which have led to declines in sales, occupancy and foot traffic.”A month earlier, Nordstrom, one of the biggest retailers in Westfield, said it would shutter both of its San Francisco stores.

Eduardo Munoz/ReutersTreks at the airport have been getting worse ever since security changes were implemented after the September 11, 2001, attacks. In Newark, Chicago and other cities’ airport terminals, moving walkways have been removed to make room for more shops and restaurants. Some new airport terminals have recently opened without moving walkways. The airport is now building a tunnel to shorten the walk from security to the concourse. So, are people missing flights now because they have to walk so far?

More than 270 new clean energy projects have been announced since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), with private investments totaling $132 billion, according to the report. These investments are expected to be accompanied by more than 86,000 jobs, including 50,000 jobs related to electric vehicles. The Inflation Reduction Act “is not only working to strengthen supply chains but also to boost domestic manufacturing and create new jobs,” Bank of America said in the report. The nearly $370 billion clean energy and climate package, which passed on a party-line vote, was the largest climate investment in US history. The law is driving the most clean energy job growth in Georgia, South Carolina, Nevada and Tennessee.

New Jersey has sued to block New York City's congestion price law using environmental review. The environmental review process has “metastasized well beyond what anyone intended it to be,” Dourado said. “To me, it’s clearly dysfunctional.”Reform effortsThe need to reform the environmental review process has become a bipartisan issue in recent years. Some environmental groups believe these reforms are needed to advance clean energy progress and other goals. While the Environmental Defense Fund supports the Biden administration’s reforms to NEPA, it’s against a draconian rollback of environmental review, he said.

New York CNN —The catastrophic wildfires in Maui have destroyed homes, churches, businesses and key cultural sites on Hawaii’s second-largest island. Maui authorities have asked tourists to leave the island and strongly discouraged nonessential travel to Maui. That means $4 of every $5 the island generates comes directly or indirectly from tourism, according to the Maui Economic Development Board. In 2019, 3.1 million people visited Maui. That still may not be enough to save AMC Theaters, which has a looming bill it may not be able to pay back. AMC (AMC) also saw its highest quarterly attendance since 2019. The quarter did not include revenue from “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” July releases, which AMC said lifted the company to its best month in its 103-year history. Still, the financial toll of the pandemic has been immense, and is still weighing down AMC and other movie theater chains. AMC took on a significant amount of debt to stay afloat during the pandemic when theaters closed and customers were at home watching Netflix.

The increase has been fast: Just five years ago, coffee, teas, lemonades and other cold drinks made up less than half of Starbucks’ beverage sales. Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesThis trend isn’t exclusive to Starbucks, as other coffee companies are catering to growing demand for cold drinks. Half of Gen Z consumers own a drip coffee brewer, compared to 60% of all coffee consumers, Mintel said. Single-family homes in Arlington, Massachusetts. Around 75% of residential land in the United States is zoned for single-family homes only. This has had the effect of encouraging ever-larger single-family homes and limiting housing options, like smaller houses. “You can’t just do it all with zoning reform,” Walla Walla City Manager Elizabeth Chamberlain told CNN. The second wave of single-family zoning laws spread during the 1970s, historians say, and the policies became more restrictive.

How market expectations have changed this year

As the economy and market continue to hum along, some investors’ expectations for what’s to come are shifting. Before the Bell: What were your market expectations at the start of this year, and how have they changed? Lori Van Dusen: When you look at what’s happened in the market on the surface, I think everybody knows it’s been a really good market, especially in the US, but it’s also been a very concentrated market around these seven stocks. And I think that’s why the market is broadening, and generally market participants are more constructive and taking their wins in technology and rotating. I think they’re fundamentally great companies, but I don’t think that their leadership will continue.
