"Who is George Santos?" "I don't get to say this very much but George Santos is correct," Jennings said in a swipe at the Republican lawmaker. Earlier this month, federal prosecutors charged Santos with wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds, part of a 13-count indictment.

Unlike the Levittowns of 1957, these early suburbs were not as homogeneous, because the wealthy people who lived there were so reliant on domestic labor. The more vaporous claim that density threatens a certain “way of life” requires us to ask: What way? In 1960, during the high period of the ranch house, 44 percent of American households were made up of married couples with children. During the same period, the proportion of households containing only a single individual more than doubled, to 28 percent. In 2010, the population of Nassau County was 66 percent white; now it is 57 percent white.
But for months, Mr. Santos has denied any criminal wrongdoing, even as he has admitted to lying about going to college and working for prestigious Wall Street firms. When he appears before a judge on Wednesday, Mr. Santos will hear the government’s case against him. Shortly thereafter, prosecutors will argue for the terms of release they believe to be appropriate to ensure that Mr. Santos returns to court. It is not yet clear whether Mr. Santos will lodge a plea or if he will be asked to do so in a subsequent hearing. Court records show that Mr. Santos spent nearly $700 using a stolen checkbook and a false name at a store near Rio de Janeiro.
Details of the case against Mr. Santos remain under seal, and the charges against him will not be revealed until later on Wednesday. A spokeswoman in Washington referred all questions to Mr. Santos’s lawyer, who did not respond to requests for comment. “It is a crisis situation,” Ms. Hochul acknowledged on Tuesday. “There’ll be literally thousands more individuals coming across the border and ultimately find their way up to the State of New York.”Counties near the city are now bracing for overflow, some more willingly than others. The executive of the Democratic stronghold of Westchester County, just to New York City’s north, is open to welcoming some undocumented migrants from the city’s overflowing shelter system. “We are not a sanctuary county,” Mr. Blakeman said. Deputies with the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department sat a few yards away in cream-colored cruisers, ready to block the entrance of any approaching bus.
Federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against Rep. George Santos, CNN and ABC reported Tuesday. A rep for Santos didn't respond to Insider's request for comment. Santos was previously found to have lied about his background during his campaign. CNN reported they were filed under seal and that the New York congressman is expected to appear in federal court as soon as Wednesday. But the revelations about Santos' background convinced many Long Islanders — including local Republicans who had backed his candidacy — to call for his resignation.
But on Wednesday, Santos received a warm reception at a DC happy hour for young conservatives. But he was still a star for the Washington, DC Young Republicans, a group that was taken over just a month ago by a cadre of self-described "ultra MAGA" young conservatives who emphatically align themselves with former President Donald Trump. —Washington, D.C. Young Republicans (@WashingtonDCYRs) April 27, 2023"Keep fighting for what you think is best, and for what you believe in," said Santos after speaking for less than 10 minutes. Perhaps owing to his precarious political standing, Santos has yet to break from party leadership on any major votes, contrasting with other New York Republicans who won Democratic-leaning districts last year. Attendees mill around before Rep. Santos' arrival.
John Saverino moved from Long Island, New York, to Glendale, Arizona, in April 2022. I lived in Long Island, Nassau County — two miles from the beach. My commute to work now actually ends up being about the same mileage as in New York, but sometimes the traffic is actually worse here. Saverino was tired of the constant traffic on Long Island. fotog/Getty ImagesIn Long Island, the drive was more highway.
Rep. George Santos, the freshman Republican lawmaker from New York whose brief time in office has been draped in scandal, announced Monday he will seek reelection in 2024. A press release shared Monday afternoon on Santos' Twitter page did not acknowledge his tumultuous start in Congress. Some polls have found that voters in Santos' district view him overwhelmingly unfavorably across party lines. Before being sworn into office in early January, Santos admitted that he had "embellished" his education credentials and his work experience. CNBC reported last week that Santos may soon face his first Democratic challenger: former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who previously represented the district.
Rep. George Santos insulted his potential Dem rival's chin during a heated Twitter exchange. The tweet backfired on Santos, who faced quick backlash and raised the profile of his opponent. "Corrective jaw surgery helped me breathe normally & saved my life," Josh Lafazan fired back. Lafazan, who lost his Democratic primary bid for the House seat in 2022, at one point wrote that he wouldn't need to lie to get elected, unlike Santos. "I'll be donating to Josh," wrote another.
A JetBlue flight from Newark, New Jersey to Fort Lauderdale, Florida was diverted to the Bahamas on April 12. After three hours in Nassau, the plane went back to Newark, some nine hours after it first left the airport. Fort Lauderdale airport had shut down because of heavy rain and flooding. JetBlue flight 205 connecting Newark with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was diverted to Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport on April 12 due to the Florida airport's closure. JetBlue flight 205 was canceled on Thursday but operated normally on Friday.

(Photo By Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York is telling political leaders and wealthy donors that he is considering running for his old seat held by embattled Republican Rep. George Santos, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. Suozzi defeated Santos during his last run for Congress in 2020. He has name recognition and is a prolific fundraiser, which could make him a frontrunner in a Democratic primary for Santos' seat. Democratic businessman Robert Zimmerman, who lost to Santos in 2022, has not ruled out running again for the seat.
Affluent suburban communities around New York City are denouncing the proposal. The mayor of Bronxville, NY told Bloomberg some wealthy communities "are losing their minds." But many of the wealthiest suburban communities around New York City aren't having it. "People in Nassau and Suffolk are losing their minds," Mayor Mary Marvin told Bloomberg. Marvin told Bloomberg that Hochul wouldn't have been elected last fall if she'd campaigned on her housing plan.
A woman has accused her neighbor for trying to steal her $350,000 home in Long Island. Prosecutors allege that her neighbor, Aurelia Soogea, 35, forged the signatures on the deeds to the house to switch ownership. NBC reports that the deed to the house shows the transfer of ownership happened for just $10. Carra has said that Mika transferred the home ownership to his client in thanks for work Soogea did helping to care for the older woman. The news site reports that Mika's legal team says this is not true, and the two women had no relationship.
Embattled Republican Rep. George Santos of New York took a step Tuesday toward a possible bid for a second term in the House, where he is currently under investigation. Santos' campaign filed a statement of candidacy for the 2024 election cycle with the Federal Election Commission, a move that could signal the freshman lawmaker's intent to run for reelection. After winning his seat, the New York Times reported that Santos appeared to have fabricated key details of his background. Joseph Murray, a lawyer for Santos' campaign, could not confirm whether the congressman was indeed seeking reelection. Santos was sworn into Congress under a cloud of scandal earlier this year, after the bombshell New York Times report questioned key details about his personal and professional life.
The U.S. housing market is taking a hard hit from higher mortgage rates, and luxury home sales are seeing the worst of it. Sales of luxury homes dropped 45% during the three months ended Jan. 31 compared with the same period the year before, according to Redfin, a real estate brokerage. Redfin defines luxury homes as those estimated to be in the top 5% based on the estimated market value. Miami, which had seen a massive influx of wealthy buyers migrating from the Northeast in the earlier days of the Covid pandemic, saw sales drop nearly 69%. While not all luxury buyers use mortgages, they are affected by the broader economy, and more specifically the stock market.
Rep. George Santos' federal political committees listed a mysterious new treasurer, CNN reported. Curiously, the treasurer's address is listed as the apartment where Santos' sister used to live. The address has also previously been listed by Santos himself as his address on campaign documents. Employees at three businesses in the building told CNN that Andrew Olson was not a name they recognized. CNN's Manu Raju approached Santos on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to ask about Olson, but Santos did not answer any questions.
Napoli Shkolnik, a law firm in New York, is suing one of its attorneys for "quiet quitting." The firm's complaint explicitly references the pandemic-era "trend" of "quiet quitting." The law firm wants to strike Palmore's compensation for her "period of her disloyalty" — meaning it wants her to return more than $400,000. Lucas Markowitz of Offit Kurman, for Napoli Shkolnik, told Abovethelaw.com that Palmore "misrepresented her skillset, experience and book of business to obtain a position with Napoli Shkolnik. She then directly competed with Napoli Shkolnik by leading her own law firm."
Rep. George Santos personally thanked a local NY lawmaker for "stopping by" his office for a chat. The lawmaker replied that he wasn't there for a chat, but to stage a protest outside. He said he was there calling for Santos' resignation and to hand-deliver a letter of complaints. The local lawmaker said that the lie did not come as a surprise, adding that he believed Santos is "very good" at distorting the truth. And a week before that, New York constituents flooded the hallway outside his office in Congress, also demanding that Santos be removed from office.
But investors have backed off, especially in formerly hot areas like Phoenix, Redfin found. The significant drop in investor purchases means less competition for regular homebuyers. Investors purchased approximately $31 billion worth of properties — equivalent to 48,445 homes —nationwide in the last three months of 2022. They include Las Vegas, Phoenix, the New York City suburb of Nassau County, Atlanta, and Charlotte, all of which saw investor purchases fall over 60% year-over-year, the report said. But the drop in home prices and investor purchases last year could signal even more dire conditions in 2023, some analysts and experts predict.
Piers Morgan pressed George Santos about some details of his personal life in a new interview. Morgan asked if Santos felt he's always been gay, and he said "No. When asked if he is indeed married, Santos nodded and told Morgan that he would show the TV host a marriage certificate after the interview. Santos told Morgan his sexuality isn't relevant to his political role. Then Morgan asked Santos if he feels like he's "always been a gay man."
Rep. George Santos hid from constituents who tried to deliver a petition to him on Wednesday. A staffer told the group that Santos was in the building but added that he refused to meet with a "mob," according to the paper. Santos' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last week, they traveled to Capitol Hill to call for the expulsion of their congressman, according to The Jerusalem Post. In January, it emerged that constituents' calls to his office were being routed to another GOP congressman, as Newsday first reported.
NASSAU/PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday said he would deploy Royal Canadian Navy vessels in the coming weeks to conduct surveillance, gather intelligence and maintain a maritime presence off the coast of Haiti. Canada, which this month deployed surveillance aircraft to Haiti, has also sent armored vehicles and security gear to support anti-gang efforts and said it would make an additional delivery of vehicles in the coming days. Trudeau also announced fresh sanctions on another two Haitian individuals determined to be supporting gangs, without disclosing their names, bringing Canada's total sanctioned people to 17. U.N. envoy to Haiti Helen La Lime has said she is "still hopeful" the force could be created, stressing the need for urgency. On Tuesday, more than 40 civil society representatives signed an open letter rejecting any draft resolution backing Prime Minister Ariel Henry's administration and demanding reparations to the families of those killed in a U.N.-linked cholera outbreak a decade ago.
A Long Island Republican warned of a "suburban uprising" over Gov. Bruce Blakeman said that Hochul's plan would trample over the autonomy of local communities. For generations, Long Island was a GOP bastion, filled with fiscally and socially conservative voters from across the political spectrum. Hochul's proposal would push for more multifamily housing developments near Long Island Rail Road stations. Still, her plan remains a tough sell for other Long Island politicians.
