We expected there to be a cooling labor market — that's kind of the goal — and it's always just, you know, how cool?" That being said, when it comes to the labor market … it is, in fact, so over. That's an improvement over July's 4.3% unemployment rate, but overall, the jobs market in the US is cooling off. Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Since mid-August, we’ve been talking with the same group of young, undecided voters about the election. Many thought Mr. Trump was weak and ineffective in the debate and easily manipulated by Ms. Harris – a revelation, they said, because they thought of him as confident and aggressive. All 14 members of our group said Ms. Harris won, which is all the more notable given that these undecided voters lean moderate or conservative. But Ms. Harris has work to do if she wants their votes. Mark, a 24-year-old from California who also voted for Mr. Biden the last time, hoped Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump would debate again, and he said: “Let’s really get some policy.

As expected, the Fed has been coy about cuts, leaving markets torn between pricing in a 25- or 50-basis-point reduction. "In cycles where rate cuts were able to prolong economic expansion and keep corporate earnings on an upward trend, stocks performed quite well," Belski wrote in a mid-September note. AdvertisementWhile rate cuts aren't a cure-all, Belski is confident that the economic expansion will continue, which will keep this bull market on firm footing. "But with significantly strong trailing one-year performance headed into this initial rate cut, future gains are likely to be more muted relative to historical norms." The dollar traded near its lowest levels of the year on Tuesday, on the eve of the expected the start to a U.S. easing cycle that markets are betting may begin with an outsized rate cut. The euro rallied overnight to $1.1138 and traded around there early in the Asia session, not far from the year's high against the dollar of $1.1201. Fed funds futures rallied on Monday to push the chance of a 50 basis point rate cut to 67%, against 30% a week ago. "That's because the contrast between central bank outlooks will remain starkest between the Fed and the BoJ, for the time being." The U.S. dollar index weakened 0.4% overnight to 100.7, not far from its 2024 low made last month at 100.51.

Stocks pushed higher as positive retail sales surprised investors. All eyes are on the Federal Reserve's likely interest rate cut on Wednesday. AdvertisementStocks moved higher after stronger-than-expected US retail sales boosted confidence in consumer health, as the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting is set to kick off. Retail sales increased 0.1% last month, compared to consensus estimates of a 0.2% decline. Strong retail sales suggest that the Fed does not necessarily have to hurry with larger cuts, as the consumer economy appears intact for now.

The survey shows 84% of the 27 respondents, including economists, fund managers and strategists, see the Fed cutting by a quarter percentage point, with 16% seeing a half-point decrease. That compares with 65% probability of a half-point cut now priced into fed futures markets. "That forecast is more in line with a hard landing than a soft landing." (One basis point equals 0.01%)Soft landing expectedThe major difference could be that survey respondents appear less worried about the economy overall than futures markets, and more convinced the Fed has time to enact gradual rate cuts. Seventy-four percent said the September rate cut comes in time to preserve a soft landing, with just 15% saying it's too late.

The chances of a smaller 25 basis point cut have fallen to a 41% chance. Barclays analyst Matthew Bouley is watching the data very closely as well and said a lot will depend on how consumers react as mortgage rates fall. Bouley said this is one of the clearest signs yet that a recent decline in mortgage rates is bringing buyers into the market. The AI boom will nearly double demand for copper, mining firm BHP told the Financial Times. Copper is a necessary material for electrification, and AI data centers will require power capacity to expand. Chief Financial Officer Vandita Pant told the Financial Times that AI data centers will account for 6% to 7% of copper demand by 2050. These conditions caused copper prices to peak to a record high in May, though China's economic tumble has helped deflate prices to $9,207 a ton. Previously, the bank also considered copper prices to benefit from the expansion of AI data centers.
