Factbox: How Malaysia's election system works
  + stars: | 2022-11-19 | by ( Mei Mei Chu | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
The general election is held every five years unless the prime minister calls for an early poll. The Election Commission typically declares the results on the day of the election and the prime minister is sworn in the next day. THE VOTERSOver 21 million Malaysians are eligible to vote in this election, including 6 million new voters. But UMNO returned to power in 2020 as part of another alliance after the opposition coalition collapsed. It won the 2018 election under the leadership of former premier Mahathir Mohamad but lost power two years later due to infighting.
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A new coalition led by former Malaysian prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was leading a hotly contested general election on Saturday, with opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim a close second, early results from the Election Commission showed. The other main contender - Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition - was losing ground in traditional strongholds to Muhyiddin's bloc, the results showed. As of 1630 GMT, the Election Commission had announced results for 123 of the 222 parliamentary seats. [1/6] Malaysian Caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob stands in a line to vote during Malaysia's 15th general election in Bera, Pahang, Malaysia November 19, 2022. The top issues are the economy, along with corruption, as several leaders from the Barisan Nasional coalition face graft accusations.
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Malaysia's former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday said he has secured enough seats in a general election to form a government, though the latest results from the Election Commission showed a hung parliament. Muhyiddin said he was willing to work with any party to reach the numbers needed to form the government. Reporting by Angie Teo and Mei Mei Chu; Writing by A. KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Anwar Ibrahim has ramped up campaigning this week to be Malaysia's prime minister, buoyed by polls putting the veteran opposition leader ahead in a closely fought contest. Rival alliances, including those run by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former premier Muhyiddin Yassin, could come together to clinch the required numbers and deny Anwar the top job. "This election is not about changing the prime minister," Anwar said in an address on Thursday. "This election is the best chance to save the country and make sweeping changes to restore our beloved nation." In an interview with Reuters this month, Anwar ruled out working with Ismail and Muhyiddin's coalitions, citing "fundamental differences" over race and religion.

REUTERS/Florence Lo/IllustrationTAIPEI, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has decried what she called "rumours" about the risk of investing in the island's semiconductor industry and said the government was working hard to ensure investments continued. But the Chinese military's menacing of the island to assert Beijing's sovereignty claims, especially after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in August, is causing the chip industry to rethink the risk surrounding Taiwan. Tsai, who met with ASML Holding's (ASML.AS) chief operations officer Frederic Schneider-Maunoury on Tuesday, praised the European manufacturer of chip-making equipment for its commitment to investing in Taiwan. Malaysia Q3 GDP up 14.2% y/y, beats forecast

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Malaysia's economy grew 14.2% from a year earlier in the third quarter, boosted by rising domestic demand and robust exports, Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus said on Friday. Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected gross domestic product to jump 11.7% in the July-September period, accelerating from the 8.9% annual growth seen in the second quarter. Reporting by Rozanna Latiff and Mei Mei Chu; Editing by Ana Nicolaci da CostaOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Growth came in above the 11.7% growth forecast in a Reuters poll and the 8.9% annual rise in the previous quarter, the central bank said. It surpassed third-quarter growth in many of its regional peers including Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. But BNM said the outlook was clouded by the risk of a global economic slowdown, forecasting economic growth to slow to 4.0%-5.0% next year. “We acknowledge there are still some spots in our economy that have yet to return to pre-pandemic condition," Nor Shamsiah said. Nor Shamsiah said the ringgit currency will adjust to reflect Malaysia's economic fundamentals once uncertainties caused by the U.S. rate moves recede, without elaborating further.
[1/5] Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad speaks during an interview with Reuters in Putrajaya, Malaysia November 8, 2022. In what he said would likely be his final election foray, Mahathir vowed to fight "against bad Malays, criminal Malays… against the Malays who had destroyed this country." "We don't agree that any one person should, even before the results come in, claim that he is the candidate for prime minister," Mahathir said. He was pardoned in 2018 after the election win that removed UMNO from power for the first time in Malaysia's post-colonial history. The nonagenarian said he had no desire to be prime minister but would do so if asked to serve again.
TAIPEI, Nov 7 (Reuters) - A British minister will visit Taiwan this week for trade talks and meet President Tsai Ing-wen, his office said on Monday, the latest high-level engagement between a Western government and the island which China claims as its own territory. Britain's Department for International Trade said Greg Hands, minister of state for trade and also a member of parliament, would meet Tsai and co-host the 25th annual UK-Taiwan Trade Talks during his two-day visit. "Visiting Taiwan in person is a clear signal of the UK's commitment to boosting UK-Taiwan trade ties. Hands will also meet Taiwan's top trade negotiator John Deng and Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua, it added. China staged war games near Taiwan in August following a visit to Taipei by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

REUTERS/Ann WangTAIPEI, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Taiwan's economy minister has drummed up new business worth T$30 billion ($940 million) in meetings with top executives at four major tech firms in California's Silicon Valley, the ministry said on Saturday. Taiwan is a major semiconductor producer, home to the world's largest contract chip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (2330.TW), , and supplies most the world's major tech firms. "The visits are expected to bring back U.S. research and development investment and orders in Taiwan worth more than T$30 billion," it said, without elaborating. Wang said on Tuesday that if Taiwan remains safe, global supply chains of vital semiconductors would also be secure.
Ferguson, a nurse working 16-hour double shifts, knew instantly who she’d find in her hallway that day in February 2019. A domestic violence survivor who previously lived in a shelter, Ferguson had never been accused of child abuse, ACS case records show. But many parents don’t know that they have the right to deny these government agents or don’t push back for fear of losing their children, according to parents and their advocates. It’s a staggering reality — likely millions of warrantless searches a year — and one that has not been reported before. Ferguson believes her constitutional rights were violated that day at her apartment, and is now suing New York City in federal court.

Dan dan noodlesIt’s nearly impossible to dislike China’s soul-comforting dan dan mian, or dan dan noodles. Dan dan noodles are named after the way they were originally sold more than 100 years ago – on a dan dan, a carrying pole, by street hawkers. Some think dan dan noodles should contain a dry mix of noodles, made with minced meat, chopped scallions, spices, crushed peanuts and various sauces. Others disagree, preferring dan dan noodles in a hot, spicy, salty and nutty broth albeit with similar ingredients. Similar to Hainanese chicken rice, the Wenchang version is often served with yellow chicken fat rice and chicken soup.

Instead, data and child welfare experts suggest the changes may have done the opposite. State child welfare officials say more vigilance in documenting severe cases of abuse likely contributed to the increase. Child welfare experts say these findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of the primary tool that states rely on to protect children: mandatory child abuse reporting. These policies, the bedrock of America’s child welfare system, were first implemented more than half a century ago in response to growing national awareness of child maltreatment. “We are continuing to tell mandated reporters, ‘Report, report, report,’ and nobody can handle it,” Berger said in an interview.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Taiwanese Minister for Economic Affairs Wang Mei-Hua said on a visit to the United States on Tuesday that if Taiwan remains safe, global supply chains of vital semiconductors would also be secure. She said Taiwan is keen for more cooperation between Taiwan and the United States to ensure resilient supply chains. “If Taiwan is safe, the global supply chain will also be secure. Asked whether Taiwan was concerned that U.S. government subsidies to encourage reshoring of chip manufacturing could lessen U.S. reliance on Taiwan, she said the Taiwanese semiconductor supply chain was “very, very concrete” having been built up over more than 40 years. “We have a very huge supply chain in Taiwan, that is difficult to duplicate, or difficult to replace.” she said.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks to journalists outside the Federal Court during a court break, in Putrajaya, Malaysia August 23, 2022. REUTERS/Lai Seng SinKUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Malaysia's veteran politician and opposition leader Mahathir Mohamad predicted on Tuesday that disgraced former prime minister Najib Razak would be released from jail if his graft-tainted ruling party wins an upcoming general election. "Should they be able to win and form the government, that is the first objective, not about the welfare of the people," Mahathir, who had two stints as prime minister, told a news conference. They were both prosecuted, along with other party leaders, after UMNO lost the 2018 election for the first time in Malaysia's history as voters punished the party for 1MDB and other corruption scandals. Investigators have said some $4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB - co-founded by Najib during his first year as prime minister in 2009 - and that over $1 billion went to accounts linked to Najib.

Customers of a restaurant watch the announcement made by Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob dissolving the parliament and calling for general elections at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, October 10, 2022. "The people's mandate is a powerful antidote for the country to manifest political stability and create a strong, stable and respected government after the general election," Ismail said. UMNO is trying to win back its dominant position by pressing for early elections, having recently won state level elections. CORRUPTION FIGHTWith the dissolution of the parliament, Ismail, who came to power in August 2021, becomes the shortest serving prime minister in Malaysian history. He was named as UMNO's prime minister candidate in April, though it was unclear if he still had that support.
Taiwan, a major chip producer, is home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) (2330.TW), the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major supplier to companies including Apple Inc (AAPL.O). "In addition to complying with domestic laws and regulations, it will also cooperate with the needs of international customers who place orders and the norms of customers in their countries." Taiwan has its own concerns about China, especially efforts by Chinese companies to poach chip talent and technical know-how. The government tightly restricts Taiwanese chip investment in China, the island's largest trading partner. She will visit U.S. tech firms that are major customers of Taiwanese semiconductor companies.
SINGAPORE, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Southeast Asia's digital media and tech sectors, underpinned by young consumers and one of the fastest growing internet markets, had drawn U.S. investment bank Raine Group to expand in the region, senior executives said. Global media, entertainment and gaming giants are ramping up their presence in Southeast Asia's fast-growing economies. Raine specializes in media, sports and technology deals and also oversees $4 billion in growth equity and venture capital. It advised Southeast Asia's biggest ride-hailing firm Grab on its purchase of Uber's regional business in 2018. Reuters reported last week that Raine had tapped Jonathan Pflug, Morgan Stanley's head of Southeast Asia M&A, to lead its regional coverage.
A man accused of killing his co-worker’s family in their Texas home more than eight years ago was arrested over the weekend after he arrived at San Francisco’s airport from China, officials said. Similar to what he told the FBI, Lu told sheriff's office investigators he didn't know where the Sun family lived until he saw news coverage of their deaths. Authorities also interviewed Lu’s wife. Oracle's marketing team "imploded" following layoffs and the departure of its CMO this summer. A source told Insider that means salespeople will be selling products to sectors they never had before, including healthcare, which is now a key focus with Cerner. Plus, products like Oracle's cloud infrastructure face competition from tech giants like Amazon, making marketing a key lever in that fight. That morning, nearly 50% of some marketing groups received phone calls that they were being laid off, including Kelman's senior staff, multiple sources told Insider. Oracle's marketing structure, as it once was, is gone.
