Disney CEO Bob Iger said Thursday that "everything is on the table" with streaming service Hulu. Disney owns two thirds of the streaming service, which focuses on more adult-oriented general entertainment content such as the series "Only Murders in the Building" and the sci fi thriller "Prey." Iger wants Disney to focus on its more family-friendly franchises, such as "Frozen" and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said that he wasn't going to speculate whether Disney is a buyer or seller of Hulu right now. Comcast introduced a proposal to buy Disney's 66% stake in Hulu, but Disney rejected the idea, CNBC previously reported.
DC Studios announced the first wave of movies and TV shows for the new DC universe. There are also aspects of the old DC movie universe — but it still shows promise. The slate, titled "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters," is, to put it plainly, bizarre — and even a bit risky. If anything, it's still a bit of the old DC Extended Universe. If Gunn and Safran wanted to keep any aspects of the old DC movie universe, they picked the right ones.
Despite a rich stable of characters from Batman to Wonder Woman, the DC film and television studio has failed to match the success of Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Marvel hit factory. Also in 2025, DC Studios will release "Batman - Part II," a sequel starring Robert Pattison, a darker, more adult tale that is not part of Gunn's newly envisioned "DC Universe." While Marvel has become the highest-grossing film franchise in history, DC Studios has had mixed results. Four DC film projects that were completed before Gunn and Safran took over the studio will be released to theaters this year, "Shazam! Zaslav cut some costs by scrapping a third "Wonder Woman" film and a "Batgirl" movie that was headed to streaming.

Marvel films are returning to China in February, marking the first time in nearly four years that Disney's comic book cinematic universe landed a release in the country. Since 2012′s "The Avengers," China has been the second-highest-grossing box office market for all Marvel movies, just behind the U.S. and Canada. The last Marvel film to open in China was 2019's "Spider-Man: Far From Home." There are also concerns about muted ticket sales from China as the coronavirus once again roils the region since the government lifted its "zero Covid" policy. For comparison, the first "Avatar" collected around $250 million in ticket sales during its run in 2009 and 2010.
"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" will be released in China next month. Marvel announced on Tuesday that "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" will be released in China on February 7 and February 17, respectively. "Wakanda Forever" has grossed $835 million worldwide, lagging behind its 2018 predecessor, which grossed $1.3 billion globally.
Kumail Nanjiani, star of Marvel’s “Eternals,” recently defended directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino’s right to criticize Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor, who played Kingo in the 2021 Marvel film, told Esquire in an interview this week he believes Tarantino and Scorsese’s long-standing contribution to the film industry is enough to justify their right. “I obviously love the movies Tarantino makes or Scorsese makes, and I may disagree with Scorsese’s opinion on superhero movies, but I mean, who else has earned the right to have an opinion? If Scorsese hasn’t earned the right to have an opinion on movies, then none of us should have an opinion on movies,” Nanjiani said in the interview. “If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie,” Liu tweeted.
China's box office dropped 36% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Chinese film officials also continued to reject many Hollywood releases, particularly Marvel movies. China's box office dropped 36% to $4.35 billion in 2022, according to Deadline, which cited figures that China's Film Administration released to state media. The 2022 North American box office rose to an estimated $7.5 billion, according to Comscore, a 64% increase from the previous year. To make matters worse for its box office, China also didn't have a local smash hit last year, like it did in 2021 with "The Battle at Lake Changjin."

He directed and starred in “Miles Ahead” and currently co-stars in Netflix’s “White Noise,” due Dec. 30. He spoke with Marc Myers. My initial exposure to acting began at home in Kansas City, Mo. I came from a very fun-loving family where humor and imagination were prized and encouraged.
All eyes are on "Avatar: The Way of Water's" second week at the box office. James Cameron's long-awaited sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time fell short of initial box-office expectations during its debut last week. The movie's second week will help clarify its longer-term box-office prospects. Showbiz analysts often look to the second week drop as an indicator of whether a film will have longevity at the box office or may fizzle quickly. A key example is Paramount and Skydance's "Top Gun: Maverick" which saw ticket sales decline just 29% in its second week in theaters.

Film lovers hoped 2022 would be the first normal year for movies in the pandemic era. Worryingly, though, ticket buyers rarely showed up for nonfranchise movies aimed at adults. Are adults in search of a meaningful film simply weary of the theatergoing experience, with its many ancient hassles plus the more recent one of omnipresent cellphones in the theater? It’s more likely that the past couple of years have simply conditioned us to expect character-based movies to appear on streaming services very soon after their theatrical releases. If anything, the pandemic has supercharged the movie industry’s relentless push toward kids’ movies and comic-book material.
In 2019, Martin Scorsese said that Marvel movies were “not cinema” and worried cinema was being “invaded” by them. As it happens, I’m not a fan of Marvel films either. For almost the entire history of movies, women haven’t had access to the capital required to make them. There were at least 15 women directors in the commercial film industry during that time. That’s dismal but more than twice as high as the number of female film directors of the same era.
Simu Liu is speaking up after director Quentin Tarantino criticized the "Marvel-ization of Hollywood," saying on a podcast that those who became famous through the superhero franchise are not real movie stars. "If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie," Liu tweeted, referring to Hollywood director Martin Scorsese. The actor also said Tarantino's "Golden Age" of cinema was "white as hell." “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is … you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters, but they’re not movie stars. Thor is the star ... It’s these franchise characters that become the star.”Simu Liu in "Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings."

"Avatar: The Way of Water" has been approved for release in China. The first movie was a hit in the world's second-largest film market, with over $260 million. Director James Cameron says the sequel needs to be one of the highest-grossing movies ever to break even. That would mean it needs to be make at least $2.07 billion to surpass the current No. China surpassed North America as the world's biggest film market in 2020 and 2021 as US theaters struggled to rebound from the pandemic.
Today, we're talking about what the downfall of Twitter could look like — and it's probably not what you think. Reporting from my colleagues Matt Weinberger and Kali Hays suggests the site probably won't crash and burn in spectacular fashion. The death of Twitter won't be the dramatic explosion you might expect. A leaked email shows Twitter employees must send Elon Musk weekly updates of everything they've worked on. In other Musk news, the billionaire told Twitter employees that he's done with layoffs for now, and he tweeted Monday that the Twitter Blue relaunch is on hold.
