Despite headline misses, Apple gave us a lot to like under the hood in its fiscal 2023 first quarter. The worst appears to be behind us — and as a result, we reiterate our 1 rating and continue to believe that Apple stock is something to own for the long-term, not trade quarter to quarter. In its December quarter, Apple returned $19 billion via the repurchase of 133 million shares and another $3.8 billion in dividends. Moreover, nearly two-thirds of Apple Watch buyers in the quarter were new to the product. Within Services, we also saw all-time revenue records for cloud services, payment services and music and December quarter records for the App Store and AppleCare.
Credit Suisse is bullish on Apple shares as the tech company prepares to announce its earnings report this week. Credit Suisse also held steady on its revenue estimate of $121.6 billion for Apple's fiscal first quarter and per-share earnings of $1.92. "We see potential upside to our estimates which are below the Street," analyst Shannon Cross said in a note to clients on Monday. She also noted that margins could benefit because Apple raised prices in many countries to offset the strong dollar. Meanwhile, Cross estimates Mac revenue having declined $3.1 billion, or 27% on a quarterly basis due to backlog fulfilled during the fiscal fourth quarter.
Morning bid: Parsing the peak, sidestepping a slump

"We are turning the corner on inflation," BoC Governor Tiff Macklem told reporters, while dismissing any thought of policy easing for now. Just how bad the underlying economy gets before the central banks are done is the other burning question. On the activity side, the prospect of reviving growth in China and the euro zone certainly changes the international picture. In Europe, STMicroelectronics jumped 8% after the chipmaker reported a sales beat and Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia jumped 5% after its own beat. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
The recent decline in the money supply comes as the Fed has been aggressively raising rates to push inflation back to its 2% target. That dynamic changed in the last two years, though, with money supply trends moving in roughly the same direction as inflation pressures: As money supply rose rapidly into early 2022, so did inflation; since M2 started a persistent decline last summer, inflation pressures have also receded. To be sure, measuring money supply is complicated, with no one way to do it. Bullard, acknowledging the cooling off of money supply, said this downshift in money "bodes well for disinflation," which means the Fed is likely to face an enduring trend of lower price pressures. Economists, meanwhile, are still taking on board whether money supply is something they need to pay greater mind to as they contemplate monetary policy and inflation.
US officials announced on Wednesday that US-made Abrams tanks would be sent to Ukraine. Ukraine will receive other armored vehicles, including a US-made vehicle designed to haul others off the battlefield. Along with the Abrams, the US will send another armored vehicle designed to haul tanks and other vehicles off the battlefield. The US announcement that it would send Abrams tanks to Ukraine comes after the US and other European partners announced that they would be sending other armored vehicles to Ukraine in the near future. This opened the door for other countries to send armored combat vehicles to Kyiv.
Germany has agreed to send their much-sought-after tanks to Ukraine. "German main battle tanks, further broadening of defense support & training missions, green light for partners to supply similar weapons. Germany has until now been reluctant to send its Leopard 2 tanks or allow other countries with these tanks in their arsenals to send them. A Leopard 2A6 main battle tank of the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, participates in the NATO Iron Wolf military exercises on October 26, 2022 in Pabrade, Lithuania. Military experts previously told Insider that these are the right tanks to send to Ukraine at this moment.
But German Leopards and American Abrams tanks are still off the table. "I just don't think we're there yet," Colin Kahl, undersecretary for defense policy, said this week, "The Abrams tank is a very complicated piece of equipment," he argued. Just over 2,000 Abrams tanks were deployed with combat units during the war, and only 23 were damaged or destroyed. In the aftermath of the Gulf War, the US military developed the M1A2 Abrams, which has steadily been upgraded over the past two decades. The Abrams tank also saw extensive combat early in the Iraq War and was used to some extent in Afghanistan.

Jan 17 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has postponed the launch of its lightweight augmented-reality glasses indefinitely due to technical challenges, but is still planning to unveil its first mixed-reality headset this year, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. The iPhone maker's mixed-reality headset - which combines both augmented and virtual reality - is set to launch in this year's spring event, Bloomberg said, adding that the device will cost around $3,000. Apple's mixed-reality device would compete with the likes of Meta Platforms' (META.O) Quest Pro virtual and mixed-reality headset, which it launched late last year for $1,500, half of the Apple device's reported price. The Cupertino, California-based company now plans to focus on lowering the price of the follow-up version of its mixed-reality device, expected as soon as 2024 or early 2025, instead of working on the AR glasses, according to the report. The Information website first reported Apple's plans to unveil a cheaper mixed-reality headset on Tuesday.
But I think this Club stock has broken away from the pack. Wells Fargo cuts price target on Goldman Sachs (GS) to $390 per share from $400 after Tuesday's earnings disappointment. UBS cuts price target on UnitedHealth (UNH) to $550 per share from $590 after a largely solid quarter; keeps neutral (hold) rating. Analysts also reiterated their $185-per-share price target on the Club stock, which represents over 38% upside from Tuesday's close. France said on January 5 that it would send the AMX-10RC armored vehicle to Ukraine. The "tank" vs. "armored vehicle" debate is a long and often contentious one, but AMX-10RCs are armored reconnaissance vehicles and not tanks, which usually have large-caliber main guns, heavy-duty armor, and tracks. Fighting there has become trench warfare, with incremental gains rather than sweeping armored offensives in which fast, armored scout vehicles excel. Armored vehicles are still vital on the battlefield, but an armored car may have limited utility against swarms of anti-tank missiles, attack drones, and smart artillery shells. What's important is that the West is sending armored fighting vehicles.
Apple will begin producing some of its MacBook computers in Vietnam next year, according to a Nikkei Asia report Tuesday. Apple was reportedly in talks in August to move some production for its Apple Watches, MacBooks and HomePods to Vietnam. Now, the company's assembly partner Foxconn could begin producing MacBooks in the country as soon as May of 2023, according to Nikkei Asia. Nikkei Asia said the company has been planning to shift some of its MacBook production to Vietnam for the last two years. Meanwhile, Apple CEO Tim Cook has committed to buying U.S.-made chips from a new Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing factory in Arizona.
A recession is guaranteed in 2023 if the Fed goes forward with more interest rate hikes, according to Jeremy Siegel. "The talk of going higher and staying high through 2023 I think would guarantee a very steep recession," Siegel said. "The talk of going higher and staying high through 2023 I think would guarantee a very steep recession," Siegel said. That suggests the Fed will like interest rates three times next year via 25-basis point rate hikes, whereas the market currently expects two 25-basis point rate hikes next year. It's hard for me to see they're pushing inflation up when they don't even match inflation," Siegel said.

REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesPARIS, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Environmental activists briefly blocked Paris's Champs Elysees avenue on Thursday in protest at what they called the French government's lack of action to counter climate change, notably inadequate levels of insulation in buildings. Some 20 members of "Derniere Renovation" (Final Renovation) sat on the wide boulevard, snarling traffic in both directions for around 10 minutes before being pulled away by police. In a statement, the group called on the government to launch a campaign for better building insulation, which it said could massively cut French carbon emissions. The building industry was willing and able to implement such a plan and "all that is missing is the political will," it said.
