I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

Silvano Marchetto, an Italian-born restaurateur whose Greenwich Village trattoria, Da Silvano, became a star-studded canteen and a Page Six fixture over four decades, died on June 4 in Florence, Italy. Akin to a downtown Elaine’s, Da Silvano, which opened in 1975, was one of New York’s reigning haunts for the art, fashion, media and film crowds. And Mr. Marchetto, a hard-living Tuscan who parked his Ferrari ornamentally outside his establishment, was its rustic host and mascot. He wore Hawaiian shirts and yellow pants, and his wrists were covered in silver bracelets and jewelry. Before social media democratized the public’s access to the lives of celebrities, tabloids like The New York Post and The Daily News relied on Da Silvano as a source of juicy gossip.

New York CNN —McDonald’s has revealed the details of its highly anticipated $5 value meal, which the fast food chain hopes will rev up sluggish sales and lure back customers who have cut back. Beginning June 25, McDonald’s US locations are selling a “$5 Meal Deal” for a limited time. Word of McDonald’s newest value meal was released last month in the Wall Street Journal, prompting fast food rivals to get a jumpstart on offering similar deals and attract cost-conscious eaters. Burger King, Wendy’s and even Starbucks have rolled out meal deals in recent weeks. The arrival of the McDonald’s meal deal comes at a time when the company is battling the perception that it has become too expensive.

How to Make 3,000-Year-Old Beer

Mr. McDonnell, an amateur brewer who lives outside Salt Lake City, saw Seamus Blackley, a video game designer, boasting on social media about baking bread with 4,500-year-old Egyptian yeast. I wonder if I could do that with beer, Mr. McDonnell recalled thinking. The answer recently arrived in the form of an amber brew that Mr. McDonnell believes is the closest approximation yet to what Rameses the Great may have been drinking between battles with the Hittites. Recent years have seen attempts to recreate the beer of the Vikings, the Late Shang and Western Zhou dynasties of China, and the Sumerians, who are believed to have invented beer. “These beers can be all over the map,” said Neil Witte, a beer expert at Craft Quality Solutions in Kansas City, Mo.

In that time prices ticked up 0.2% at limited service spots, which include fast casual and fast food joints. Grocery prices rose 1% in the 12 months through May. Sony Pictures Entertainment is acquiring Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and will manage its 35 locations, a rare example of a traditional Hollywood studio’s owning a theater chain. The deal, announced Wednesday, followed the Justice Department’s decision in 2020 to rescind the so-called Paramount consent decrees — movie distribution rules dating to 1949 that forced the largest Hollywood studios to sell off their theater holdings. Those rules were intended to prevent studios from controlling the film business, from creation to exhibition. In recent years, Netflix, the leading streaming company, has bought theaters to show films. Alamo, the seventh-largest theater chain in North America, operates theaters in 25 metro areas across the United States and has invested in distinctive programming and food offerings in an attempt to lure in moviegoers away from major multiplexes.

New York CNN —Starbucks is the latest entrant in the value menu wars, joining its rivals in releasing new offers to lure back cash-strapped consumers. The offer, available all day, comes in two options: For $5, a customer can order a tall iced or hot coffee or an iced or hot tea paired with a croissant. For Starbucks, it’s part of broader changes rolling out this summer, which include a new iced coffee blend, updated its app with more accurate ordering times and new promotions. Starbucks is also making tweaks to its two-year-old partnership with Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program, which lets customers earn miles on every transaction. Beginning Wednesday, customers will only earn miles on Starbucks account reloads of $25 or more rather than per dollar spent at its cafes.

But you can get one of the chain's best deals without ever setting foot in the store. That's because Costco loyalists know there's no better place to buy gasoline than at the wholesale giant's pumps, which regularly undercut the competition. Costco said in its report that it believes its gasoline business "enhances traffic in our warehouses." Even if you're not a Costco shopper, the savings on gasoline alone can make the price of a $60 membership worthwhile. Using a little back of the envelope math, David and Susan conservatively estimate that a member would only need to drive 7,500 miles per year while exclusively buying Costco gas before their membership pays for itself.

As usual, Paris will open its regular summer beach on the banks of the Seine river. Paris’ city government confirmed to CNN it is confident that the water quality will meet health standards during the game. For those who still might recoil at the idea of jumping in a city center waterway, there are other options. The beaches are the centerpieces of a program of activities in Paris aimed at creating an Olympic festival for visitors descending on the city during the 2024 summer Games. Entry is via a lottery through the Paris Olympic Games app.
