Tesla wins first U.S. Autopilot trial involving fatal crash
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The jury verdict represents Tesla's second big win this year, in which juries have declined to find that its software was defective. The trial involved gruesome testimony about the passengers' injuries, and the plaintiffs asked the jury for $400 million plus punitive damages. The electric-vehicle maker also argued it was unclear whether Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash. During the trial in Riverside, an attorney for the plaintiffs showed jurors a 2017 internal Tesla safety analysis identifying "incorrect steering command" as a defect, involving an "excessive" steering wheel angle. The automaker subsequently engineered a system that prevents Autopilot from executing the turn which caused the crash.

Ms. Ellis emerged from her plea hearing as a likely star witness for prosecutors, starting with the one who secured her cooperation, the Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis. Ms. Ellis is poised to be a potent weapon against Mr. Trump in the courtroom and on TVs. That is bad news for her former co-defendants — above all, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Trump. Ms. Ellis was most closely associated with Mr. Giuliani, appearing by his side in Georgia and across the country. Ms. Ellis’s likely trial testimony will also hit Mr. Trump hard.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A judge removed himself from the Young Dolph murder case Friday after he was ordered to do so by a Tennessee appeals court, which questioned whether he could be impartial to a man charged with killing the rapper two years ago. Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee asked the court clerk to assign a new judge in the high-profile case. Johnson and Cornelius Smith have pleaded not guilty in the killing of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr. Coffee said he made the call “in court, on the bench, with another case before the Court,” according to the appeal ruling. The appeals court reversed Coffee's denial of the recusal motion and said that a new judge should be reassigned.

Daughters of Jubilation, by Kara Lee CorthronThough Evalene Deschamps is hesitant to call herself a “witch,” she could go toe to toe with the best spell casters in Y.A. Evvie comes of age in the Jim Crow South, and she is in possession of a volatile magic. Her abilities are tied to her emotions, and their unpredictability is inconvenient at best, but oftentimes violent. She learns about her powers under the tutelage of her Grandma Atti, and their scenes are some of the most captivating in the book. Evvie eventually finds out that her magic was born as a defense against the pain wrought on her ancestors by slavery and white supremacy, and as she learns to control her powers, she must also navigate typical teen things — complicated friendships, big-sister responsibilities and blossoming young love.

“We are suing to stop the federal government from playing politics with the health of Tennessee women,” Skrmetti said in a statement. In 2021, the Biden administration reversed a ban on abortion referrals by clinics that accept Title X funds. Under the latest rule, clinics cannot use federal family planning money to pay for abortions, but they must offer information about abortion at the patient's request. Then, last year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing many Republican-led states like Tennessee to impose abortion bans. Tennessee has increasingly called for rejecting federal funding rather than comply with requirements over LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access and other hot-button issues.

An employee walks past the logo of LG Energy Solution at its office building in Seoul, South Korea, November 23, 2021. LGES, which supplies Tesla (TSLA.O), General Motors (GM.N) and other automakers, said revenue growth in 2024 would not be as high as the mid-30% rate forecast for this year. LGES shares dropped as much as 6.69% to the lowest level in more than 12 months, versus the benchmark KOSPI's (.KS11) 0.6% fall. The company also said it would produce cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from 2026 to better respond to demand for lower-priced EVs. But it was down 6% from the June quarter due to the demand slowdown in Europe, production adjustments by automakers and lower metal prices.

Expectations for persistently higher interest rates has led companies to alter plans as they eye 2024 warily. "EV demand next year could be lower than expectations," Lee Chang-sil, chief financial officer at South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) said on Wednesday, due to global economic uncertainty. GM on Tuesday said it would focus near-term EV efforts on meeting demand rather than hitting specific volume targets. If interest rates remain high or if they go even higher, it's that much harder for people to buy the car." Like many other industrial firms, carmakers hedge against commodity price swings, and with EV demand slowing, raw material prices have softened, including those used heavily in batteries.

WASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - A former lawyer for Donald Trump, Jenna Ellis, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to helping the then-U.S. president's efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state of Georgia and agreed to testify against Trump if called upon. "What I did not do and should have done, your honor, was to make sure that the facts the other lawyers alleged to be true were in fact true," Ellis told Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee. Ellis, 38, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting false statements and writings. Prosecutors said she attended a meeting with Georgia lawmakers where Trump personal lawyer and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani made false claims about voting irregularities. It is unclear what Powell, Chesebro and Ellis have told prosecutors or how broad their testimony could be.

Trump’s Loss of Loyalty

But for Trump, Ellis' plea was especially damaging, since it underscored the steady evaporation of something Trump has demanded from staff and associates since his days as a New York businessman: loyalty. "If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. The three former Trump lawyers who pleaded guilty in Georgia were facing some serious potential consequences, he noted, including not just time behind bars but the loss of their law licenses – and that may take priority over honoring Trump's demands for loyalty. A Tesla logo is seen outside a showroom of the carmaker in Beijing, China May 31, 2023. The jury trial, in a California state court, featured testimony from one Tesla employee about Autopilot that the company repeatedly asked to be kept hidden from the public. The lawsuit, filed against Tesla by the passengers, accuses the company of knowing that Autopilot and other safety systems were defective when it sold the car. The electric-vehicle maker also claims it was unclear whether Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash. The iPhone 15 features a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port which has been standard for more than decade. YouTuber Marques Brownlee says the new port lets the iPhone 15 transfer battery power to older iPhones. iPhone 15 devices can also communicate with each other to figure out which has a lower battery level, he said.
