MEXICO CITY (AP) — California avocado growers are fuming this week about a U.S. decision to hand over pest inspections of Mexican orchards to the Mexican government. Because the United States also grows avocados, U.S. inspectors observe orchards and packing houses in Mexico to ensure exported avocados don’t carry pests that could hurt U.S. crops. The letter added, "We are looking for specifics as to why you have concluded that substituting APHIS inspectors with Mexican government inspectors is in our best interest." Only the states of Michoacan and Jalisco are certified to export avocados to the United States. Some packers in Mexico buy avocados from other, non-certified states, and try to pass them off as being from Michoacan.

According to Lebanese health officials, Israeli strikes have killed 558 people and led thousands to flee for safety. "It's not going to be a walk in the park," Assaf Orion, a retired brigadier general from the Israeli military told the Journal. Analysts say that Hezbollah has likely learned valuable lessons from working with the Russian military in Syria. The latest round of conflict between Israel and militias aligned with its arch-foe Iran began on October 7, when Hamas launched terror attacks in Israel and Israeli forces invaded Gaza. Hezbollah launched missile attacks on northern Israel in solidarity with Hamas, while the US pledged support for Israel if attacked and the Kremlin shored up support for its regional allies.

Two of Walz’s false claims are related to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation think tank’s detailed right-wing blueprint for the next Republican administration. Project 2025 has been the subject of multiple false or misleading claims from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign this summer. Project 2025 does not propose to make people register with any federal agency when they get pregnant. Project 2025 is firmly anti-abortion; it proposes, among other things, to criminalize the mailing of abortion medication and devices. In fact, Vance made the comment before Project 2025 was even created.

War death tolls are estimates, and exact comparisons between conflicts are difficult. “Prior to the Gaza war, munitions deployed with this intensity and with this frequency would have been almost unheard-of,” Ms. Tripp said. The Lebanese health ministry said that 94 women and 50 children were killed on Monday, or just over 25 percent of the total death toll. Those numbers suggest that the number of civilian men killed in Lebanon on Monday exceeded the combined number of slain women and children. And it is far higher than the average daily toll during the Syrian war in 2014, the deadliest year of that decade-long conflict.

The boost comes shortly after China introduced a swath of new stimulus measures to prop up its sluggish economy and boost domestic demand. AdvertisementThe new stimulus measures also boosted China's CSI 300 of Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed shares, with the index closing 4.3% higher on Tuesday in its best day in four years. And the Stoxx Europe 600 index climbed as much as 0.9%, led by luxury stocks amid hopes that sluggish Chinese consumer spending will rebound. Yet, some analysts remain wary that China's stimulus measures won't have drastic enough impacts to actually rescue the country from its economic woes. AdvertisementIn recent months, China's economy has struggled to escape weak consumer sentiment and continues to face a struggling property sector.

“We are the closest we’ve been to spiraling to a regional war” since Hamas’ October 7 attack, one of the officials said. The US assesses that neither Israel nor Hezbollah are interested in a full-scale war, officials said. On Monday, Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, warned of “dangerous consequences” following Israel’s strikes. Israel has told the US that a full-scale war is not the intent of its strikes, according to an Israeli official. The goal is a diplomatic solution through escalation, the Israeli official said.

Even if Qualcomm acquired Intel, it's unclear what it would do with its manufacturing operations. Which Intel lacked," tweeted Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning research at Nvidia, who previously worked at Intel as an intern on the Larrabee project. The CPUs that made Intel big now have presented what Logan Purk, senior analyst at Edward Jones, called "the inventor's dilemma," when newer technology replaces established incumbents. Mobile chipmaker Qualcomm approached Intel to acquire its chip-designing business and, later, a merger deal, Reuters and the Journal reported, respectively.

AP —Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill was officially written into law Tuesday, allowing same-sex couples to legally wed. The law was published in the Royal Gazette after endorsement by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and will come into effect in 120 days. This means LGBTQ+ couples will be able to register their marriage in January next year, making Thailand the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex marriage. Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity but struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon said last week that the city officials will be ready to register same-sex marriages as soon as the law gets enacted.

Goldman SachsWage growth is down from 6% in August 2022 to 3.9%, according to Goldman Sachs. Still, Goldman Sachs thinks the US unemployment rate will drift down to 4% in 2025, which would be a healthy figure. An influx of immigrants may have affected this trend, Goldman Sachs economists say. Goldman SachsLabor costs rose 7% in 2023 for S&P 500 companies and 5% for firms in the Russell 2000, Goldman found. Goldman Sachs shared a sector-neutral list of 50 stocks in the S&P 500 that have high labor costs, which should disproportionately benefit as wage inflation slows as raises become rarer.
