New York CNN —A federal judge overseeing a $30 billion preliminary swipe-fees settlement between Mastercard, Visa and retailers formally rejected the deal Tuesday. The proposed settlement would have lowered those fees by at least 0.04% percentage points for a minimum of three years. What the preliminary settlement entailedThe proposed settlement, which hinged on final approval from the Eastern District of New York, resulted from a longstanding antitrust class-action lawsuit in 2005.

Why Europe’s youth are flirting with the far-right
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Christian Edwards | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
In this month’s European Parliament elections, far-right parties performed predictably well – but especially, and unexpectedly, among young people. Far-right parties enjoyed a similar uptick in support in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Austria, and continued to do well in Italy. Gonzalo Fuentes/ReutersBut young voters appear less concerned by these roots, says Simon Schnetzer, author of a recent survey of Germany’s youth. But the burst in support for far-right parties could spell a darker trend. This success of far-right parties should be a warning to Europe’s mainstream.

In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person, according to the World Economic Forum. “What you’re seeing is increased spending on programs like Medicare and Social Security as the baby boomers are aging into those programs. And then of course, fewer workers relative to the number of people who are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits,” said Dahl. Social Security payments still provide about 90% of income for more than a quarter of older adults in the United States, according to Social Security Agency surveys. But without intervention, the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by the mid-2030s, meaning that only a portion of retirees’ expected benefits will be paid out.

The highest-paid CEOs don't all lead the world's biggest companies. On Monday, C-Suite Comp published its list of the highest-paid CEOs of 2023 based on "total compensation granted," a measure that includes executives' salaries, bonuses, perks and stock options, among other factors. CEOs often receive restricted stock or options as a significant part of their compensation, the value of which can fluctuate based on the company's performance and market conditions. This new measure of executive earnings, dubbed "compensation actually paid" under SEC rules, is designed to help stakeholders better understand how executive pay aligns with the company's financial performance. Here's how much the U.S.'s best-paid CEOs are being awarded, as of 2023:
