CNN —A New York appeals court judge on Friday rejected Donald Trump’s attempt to stop the ongoing $250 million civil fraud trial, but temporarily halted the process of breaking up his businesses. We’re not seeking anything but a fair trial and these errors permeate the ongoing trial,” Trump attorney Christopher Kise said in court Friday, referring to “an avalanche of errors” in the summary judgment ruling. “And tellingly, they waited until after Mr. Trump decided to stop attending the trial,” the letter says. Trump attorneys and his co-defendants notified the appellate court that they’ve agreed with the New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office to discontinue the suit. Engoron handed down the summary judgment ruling last week, causing the appellate court to deny Trump’s request for a stay as moot because Engoron ruled as they requested.

CNN —Judge Arthur Engoron rebuked Donald Trump after the former president attacked his clerk in a social media post on Tuesday and forbade the parties from making any future comments about his staff. Trump looked straight ahead at the judge as he issued the order. The New York attorney general is seeking to bar Trump from doing business in the state. Monday, Trump also went after the clerk in his comments outside the courtroom, though he didn’t mention her by name. The post, which Trump included as an image in his own Truth Social post, did not allege that the clerk was Schumer’s girlfriend, merely that the two were “palling around.” Trump added the baseless “girlfriend” claim.

CNN —A New York judge has found Donald Trump and his adult sons liable for fraud, saying the Trumps provided false financial statements for roughly a decade. Judge Arthur Engoron’s ruling came days before the civil case involving the New York attorney general’s office and the former president was set to go to trial. Engoron granted Attorney General Letitia James’ motion for summary judgment, finding Trump, his sons, and others “to be liable as a matter of law for persistent violations” of New York state law. He found the financial statements the Trumps provided to lenders and insurers for about a decade to be false and said they repeatedly engaged in fraud. In the order, the judge rejected Trump’s deposition testimony in which the former president said that the financial statements were not fraudulent because they contained disclaimers.

CNN —Federal prosecutors in Manhattan filed another indictment against FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried Monday, dropping another count against him. Prosecutors had previously indicated their plans to drop the one count of conspiracy to make unlawful campaign contributions against Bankman-Fried last month in a letter to the court. Prosecutors maintain that Bankman-Fried conducted an illegal campaign finance scheme in connection to the charges that are moving forward to trial. “The defendant’s use of customer deposits to conduct a political influence campaign was part of the wire fraud scheme charged in the original indictment. Bankman-Fried’s attorneys said they reserve the right to challenge evidence prosecutors may seek to use.

New York CNN —Attorneys filed a preliminary plan to facilitate a $290 million settlement fund for JPMorgan Chase to compensate victims of Jeffrey Epstein. “JPMC is entering into this Stipulation solely to eliminate the burden, expense, and uncertainty of further protracted litigation. Attorneys for the parties have suggested Simone Lelchuk oversee the JPMC settlement process as she has already been appointed claims administrator for the Deutsche Bank settlement. Claimants can see the award money from both bank settlements, though the JPMorgan settlement language notes that any award amount received through the Deutsche Bank settlement will be considered when processing their claim with JPMC. JPMorgan Chase remains tied up in litigation over its longtime relationship with Epstein in a pending lawsuit brought by the government of the US Virgin Islands.

The guarantors were listed as Elma Santos Preven and Gercino Dos Santos, according to signatures on the court documents that were unsealed. But Santos’ father and aunt “agreed to be personally responsible” for the congressman’s compliance with the terms of his release, the order noted. The family members’ names were revealed Thursday after Santos and his lawyer lost an appeal to keep the identities of the bond co-signers under seal. Santos had argued that he needed to shield his bond co-signers to protect their privacy and risked having them with withdraw their support once their names became public. Santos Preven, who also has donated to her nephew’s congressional campaign, was described as a mail handler for the US Postal Service, in an FEC donation record from October 2021.

The plaintiff’s filing accuses JPMorgan of intentionally slow-walking its document production to avoid questioning on certain topics during depositions that occurred over the last few months. The plaintiff attorneys want to ask Dimon about an extensive JPMC internal review related to Epstein conducted in the fall of 2019. The financial institution produced “key documents” related to that review days after Dimon’s deposition, according to the motion. “These documents demonstrate that JPMC was fully capable of learning the full extent of Epstein and Staley’s personal relationship,” the filing says. “We do not believe there is any basis to reopen any of these depositions,” a spokesperson for JPMC told CNN on Friday afternoon.

CNN —An anonymous woman and actor Cuba Gooding Jr. have “resolved the matter” in the federal civil rape case against him, according to a court docket entry. The trial was set to kick off Tuesday with jury selection, but is now “off the calendar,” the docket states. The woman had alleged that Gooding raped her at the Mercer Hotel in August 2013 after meeting her in a bar earlier that night. Last year, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of forcibly touching a woman at a New York City nightclub in 2018. Gooding admitted to kissing the woman, a waitress at the club, on her lips without consent.

Dimon made the remarks in a deposition for lawsuits against the bank related to its alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. Dimon testified that he had never personally met or spoken over the phone with Epstein. Dimon testified that the bank’s general counsel would have had the final say to cut ties with a client like Epstein. According to Dimon, Staley and Erdoes could not have overridden the general counsel. “What has become clear is that Epstein could not have run his sex trafficking operation without the valuable assistance of JPMorgan, Chase.

CNN —Members of the billionaire Sackler family will be protected from current and future lawsuits over their role in their Purdue Pharma’s opioid business, a New York court of appeals ruled Tuesday. The ruling clears the way for a bankruptcy deal for Purdue Pharma, which is owned by the family. In exchange for immunity, the Sacklers will personally pay out billions of dollars to help fight the ongoing opioid epidemic. Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy in 2019. While the court’s decision compels the Sackler family to pay up to $6 billion to states, individual claimants and opioid crisis prevention, the ruling acknowledged that “total satisfaction” rarely occurs in complicated bankruptcy cases.

New York CNN —A federal judge ruled Friday that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office must turn over documents related to former JPMorgan Chase (JPM) executive James “Jes” Staley in response to a subpoena from the bank in ongoing federal lawsuits that allege JPMorgan enabled and benefited from longtime banking-client Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. Staley has denied all wrongdoing alleged in the lawsuits. It is unclear if there is an active investigation into Staley. Judge Jed Rakoff overruled Bragg’s assertion of privilege over certain documents requested in the bank’s subpoena determining that after a full review he found that the privileges and statutes invoked by the Manhattan prosecutor do not apply to the requested documents. The documents will be sealed under a protective order, the ruling said.

The suit was filed in 2018 after SAS unsuccessfully tried to join in as a plaintiff in the Townsend family’s suit. Still, the legal battle over “Thinking Out Loud” is not over for Sheeran and his co-defendants. Representatives for Sheeran declined to comment on Stanton’s dismissal of the case. Another lawsuit that splintered from the original SAS suit against Sheeran and his co-defendants is also still pending in Manhattan federal court. Pullman says the sound recording of “Let’s Get It On” coupled with its sheet music, both of which are registered with the US Copyright Office, will prove their case against Sheeran.
CNN —A Manhattan federal jury found that Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in a luxury department store dressing room in the spring of 1996 and is liable for defamation. The jury found him liable for battery in Carroll’s civil trial against him based on that sexual assault claim. Trump has denied all wrongdoing. Trump did not attend the trial. Like any defendant in a civil case, he was not required to appear in court for trial or any proceedings and has a right not to testify in his own defense.
Carroll receiving a monetary award from this trial hinged on whether the jury unanimously believed her claims against Trump. “For E. Jean Carroll this lawsuit is not about the money,” attorney Roberta Kaplan said during closing arguments on Monday. Trump appears the most agitated on the video when he denies Carroll’s rape allegation. Two friends that Carroll testified she told soon after the alleged rape testified about their recollection of Carroll’s account in 1996. Tacopina in his closing argument Monday also accused Carroll of fabricating her rape allegations to sell her book.
CNN —Attorneys for E. Jean Carroll and Donald Trump are set to give closing arguments Monday morning in the battery and defamation trial against the former president in Manhattan federal court. Carroll’s legal team put on 11 witnesses in her case including the writer herself over seven trial days. “He has a right to testify which has been waived but if he has second thoughts, I’ll at least consider it and maybe we’ll see what happens,” Kaplan told the attorneys. Trump, who has not appeared in the courtroom at any point during the trial, told reporters in Ireland on Thursday he’ll “probably attend” the trial. No such motion was made by the deadline Sunday and his attorneys confirmed he will not attend the trial.

New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is scheduled be deposed May 26 and 27 in two civil cases related to the bank’s former client, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, according to a source familiar with the cases. A complaint filed last month in New York alleged that JPMorgan Chase executives were aware of numerous sex abuse and trafficking allegations against Epstein several years before the financial institution cut ties. The complaint was part of a lawsuit against the bank filed by the attorney general for the US Virgin Islands (USVI). It added an additional count alleging that JPMorgan obstructed federal law enforcement and prosecuting agencies that were pursuing Epstein. CNN has reached out to JP Morgan for comment.
Lisa Birnbach recounted how Carroll called her minutes after leaving the department store and told her about the altercation in detail. Birnbach said Carroll soundedb “breathless, hyperventilating, emotional. “He pulled down my tights, he pulled down my tights,” Carroll repeated on the phone, according to Birnbach. Carroll refused to go to the police and made her friend promise never to speak of it again. After Birnbach publicly identified herself in 2019 as Carroll’s friend referenced in Carroll’s book, Birnbach said she gave a few media interviews to support Carroll.
New York CNN —The judge overseeing a civil battery and defamation trial for columnist E. Jean Carroll against Donald Trump warned the former president’s counsel on Wednesday about comments their client made on social media about the case. Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, outside the presence of the jury, flagged to federal District Judge Lewis Kaplan a post Trump made on his social media site Truth Social earlier Wednesday about the lawsuit. Trump has denied the allegations. Judge Kaplan warned Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina that the statement and any further statements about the case could open Trump up to “a new source of potential liability.” Tacopina said he would ask his client to refrain from any further comments about the case. Carroll is suing Trump for battery and defamation, alleging that he raped her at Bergdorf Goodman in the spring of 1996 and then defamed her years later when she went public with the allegations.
New York CNN —Former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll took the stand Wednesday morning in her battery and defamation lawsuit against former President Donald Trump. “I’m here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn’t happen,” Carroll testified. Beall worked at the luxury department store for a decade until about 1998, and had an office on the sixth floor adjacent to the lingerie department where Carroll has alleged Trump raped her. The fitting room door locked automatically when closed, she testified. Beall said the store had a practice of keeping fitting room doors closed while not in use, but they’d “regularly” be left open.
New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday denied a request by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office for a temporary restraining order to stop a House Judiciary Committee subpoena of former prosecutor Mark Pomerantz. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil said Pomerantz must appear for a deposition as the House panel investigates Bragg’s recent indictment of former President Donald Trump. Bragg’s office says it will appeal. During the hearing, an attorney for Bragg’s office argued – unsuccessfully – that Pomerantz ignored cautions from the DA before publishing the book, so the district attorney’s office should not be penalized. The clash between federal and state powers began in March when Jordan asked Bragg’s office for documents and communications after news organizations reported that Bragg’s office was moving closer to seeking to indict Trump.
