Kuzmina, 32, is training to be an electrician in Kamianske, a city in eastern Ukraine. Because of worker shortages in fields like driving, mechanical work, and road work, the Ukrainian government launched a program that provides women with training vouchers. But Ukrainian women must still contend with employers and even family members who aren't always on board with more women taking traditionally male jobs. But soon after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kuzmina's commander disbanded the unit because of a lack of resources. CNN —Russian authorities were on Monday evacuating civilians from more areas along the Ukrainian border, a week into Kyiv’s surprise cross-border incursion into Russian territory. Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region in southern Russia, said people living in the Krasnoyaruzhsky district were being relocated to safer places. A photo provided by the Government of Kursk region of Russia shows people from the border districts of the region boarding evacuation buses. Russian authorities imposed a sweeping counter-terror operation in the three border regions, but stopped short of declaring the incursion an act of war. The counterterrorist regime officially gives Russian authorities wider powers, including the ability to monitor telephone conversations and restrict communications and limiting the movement of people.

Read previewUkraine has surprised the world with its attack on Kursk, a rare ground invasion of Russian soil. As of Monday, the Kremlin announced that Ukrainian troops had advanced almost 19 miles into the western Russian region. In a public meeting that afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed his military to purge Ukrainian troops from Kursk. Matthew Savill, director of military sciences at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, assessed on Monday that some Russian troops had been moved from within Ukraine, but the scale is unclear. He said this would likely only be incidental to Ukraine's main strategic goal in the Kursk attack.

The unprecedented assault began on Tuesday, when up to 1,000 troops entered the Kursk region, according to Russian reports. In Ukraine, the country continues to battle Russia on domestic fronts, including a deadly air attack early Sunday on Kyiv. Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, has also sent more troops to its border with Ukraine and said Saturday that Ukrainian drones had violated its airspace. Top Russian general Valery Gerasimov boasted last week that Ukrainian troops had been stopped, but Russia is yet to report pushing Kyiv’s forces back across the border. APBut advances into Russia come at a time when Ukrainian forces continue to struggle on several longstanding conflict zones inside its own borders.

CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed Kyiv’s troops are fighting inside Russia, days into the surprise Ukrainian cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region that has become a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. Now into its sixth day, the attack on Kursk is a significant development in the more than two-year old conflict. The surprise factor appear to have worked: as of Sunday, Russian troops seemed to struggle to stop the Ukrainian advances and push Kyiv troops back. The governor of Kursk region has urged authorities there to speed up evacuations on Sunday. Early on Sunday, Moscow launched drone and missile attacks against Kyiv region, according to local officials.

Russian troops appear to have halted the northward advance of Ukrainian soldiers who launched a surprise cross-border attack five days ago, but have not stopped their eastward push, military analysts say, as Moscow tries to contain Kyiv’s largest assault into Russian territory since the start of the war. Yet despite any Russian boasting that might garner, the incursion into the southwestern region of Kursk has also prompted questions over how it was allowed to happen in the first place. Andrei Gurulyov, a retired military officer who is now a member of Parliament, on Friday condemned Russia’s response and level of preparedness. “There is no military system in place for guarding the state border, no reserves and no second lines of defense,” he said on Telegram, adding, “If the Ukrainian Armed Forces spent two months preparing for this, how did we miss it?”The assault has also left analysts wondering why Ukraine would take such a risk, with some suggesting a desire to draw Russian troops away from the front lines. On Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine alluded to another possible benefit: newly captured Russian troops who could be traded for Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The video, released Wednesday by the Kremlin, showed the Russian president was not happy with news from the southern region of Kursk. The head of the city of Rylsk – some distance from the most advanced Ukrainian units – said Friday more than half the population of 15,000 had left. An expeditionary forceUkrainian troops, even if reinforced, cannot expect to occupy several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory. But holding a large chunk Russian territory is beyond their capacity and probably beyond their goal. “The unfolding events demonstrate the extent to which Moscow has deeply depended on sanctuary in Russian territory to wage its war against Ukraine,” Barros told CNN.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. US officials say they do not believe Ukraine intends to hold Russian territory for the long term. But as the scale of the attack became clearer, with thousands of Ukrainian troops advancing up to 6 miles into Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin hurried to contain the fallout. Ukraine's attack catches Russia off guardA Russian military video showing a Ukrainian tank during an attack on the Kursk region in Russia in August. It's led to fierce criticism of the Kremlin from ultranationalist bloggers, who've questioned why the Russian military was so unprepared and criticized chaotic attempts to evacuate civilians. Putin has so far been able to avoid major domestic unrest from the two-year war — despite the vast casualties it's inflicted on the Russian military. But the 2023 rebellion by the Russian mercenary group Wagner exposed Putin's vulnerability to blowback from events in Ukraine.

The Russian cruise missile that slammed into a children’s hospital in Kyiv last month left behind clues about Russia’s defense industry after more than two years of war. That suggests Russian forces are using weapons like it as soon as they roll off the production line, the group said. But it is also proof that Russia has continued to produce advanced weapons despite Western-led sanctions aimed at slowing their production. The July 8 attack on the hospital killed two people and injured more than 30, including eight children, according to the hospital’s director. It was one of the worst days of violence against Ukrainian civilians in months as Russian forces targeted cities across the country.

Ukrainian drones struck a key military airfield in Russia's Lipetsk region, forcing authorities to declare a state of emergency in another Russian region this week in the face of Kyiv's ongoing cross-border offensive. All are receiving the necessary assistance," Artamonov said in a later Google-translated Telegram update, without detailing the state of those who had suffered injuries. Kursk was still reporting missile danger alerts as of Friday, according to Google-translated Telegram updates from regional Governor Alexei Smirnov, who said the local situation remained "difficult." Moscow has continued its own advances, with a Russian missile hitting a supermarket in the town of Kostiantynivka in the front-line Ukrainian region of Donetsk on Friday. At least 10 people were killed and 35 others were injured as a result, according to Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko in a Google-translated Telegram update.

CNN —Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers. Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. Neither the Ukrainian military nor the government in Kyiv has publicly commented on the operation. A Russian military blogger Rybar reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border.

On Tuesday, Kyiv took badly needed resources and fresh troops and launched them well inside Russia. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, is pictured on July 2, 2023 in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. That could mean fewer gliding bombs hitting Ukrainian frontline troops and fewer missiles terrorizing Ukraine’s urban communities. Russia may be invited to attend the next peace conference held by Ukraine and its allies. It is unclear if Ukraine’s move into Kursk is motivated by that, or a simple move to inflict damage where the enemy is weak.
