Kathy Hochul, in New York City earlier this month, emerged from the state budget battle with her political clout diminished. Kathy Hochul ’s announcement this week of a $229 billion state budget agreement was a coda to several bruising months battling with lawmakers in her party, making clear her political clout has diminished since winning a closer-than-expected election last year. The budget is a month past due, the latest it has been in more than a decade. The Democratic governor was forced to drop her marquee plan to spur more housing growth in the face of legislative resistance. Separately, she suffered an unprecedented rebuke when lawmakers rejected her first nominee to lead the state’s court system.

Photographer: Jeenah Moon/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesApple supplier Cirrus Logic's shares fell about 12% early afternoon Wednesday after a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro won't use Cirrus' haptic touch technology as heavily as initially expected. Cirrus' technology and parts help power Apple's haptic touch systems, which have been used to replace physical buttons, like the home button on some iPhones, with touch-sensitive buttons that mimic the way a button push feels. Cirrus' relationship with its "largest customer," widely acknowledged as Apple, provided around 88% of its revenue for the most recent quarter. Kuo had previously said that Apple would expand its use of Cirrus' technology beyond haptic touch and replace the physical volume buttons with solid-state technology.
Prosecutor Chris Conroy said: "The defendant Donald J. Trump falsified New York business records in order to conceal an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election and other violations of election laws." SOCIAL MEDIA POSTSProsecutors during the arraignment said Trump made a series of social media posts, including one threatening "death and destruction" if he was charged. "They can't beat us at the ballot box so they try to beat us through the law," Trump said. The false records included invoices from Cohen, entries in a ledger for Trump maintained by the Trump Organization, and check stubs, according to the indictment. "Under New York state law, it is a felony to falsify business records with intent to defraud and intent to conceal another crime.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington called self-ruled Taiwan "an inalienable part of China" and said the one-China principle was an "overwhelming trend" internationally. When Taiwan temporarily averted a split with Honduras after President Xiomara Castro took office in January 2022, U.S. State Department officials remained wary. The Biden administration is also keeping a close eye on tiny Belize for any cracks in its Taiwan relationship. Two U.S. officials said Washington was putting less stock in Taiwan maintaining its diplomatic allies in favor of efforts to increase its participation in international organizations. While denied a seat in the United Nations, Taiwan is a member of the WTO and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social profile shortly after arriving in New York from Florida on Monday, urging supporters to donate to his campaign. REUTERS/Jeenah MoonApril 3 (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed Donald Trump supporters directly Monday, saying city authorities would not hesitate to arrest and charge anyone who breaks the law in protest over the former president's upcoming arraignment on state charges. Trump was heading to New York on Monday and was due to surrender to prosecutors in Manhattan on Tuesday. Adams warned Trump supporters against turning to violence on Tuesday, saying the city was "not a playground for ... misplaced anger." While you're in town, be on your best behavior," said the Democratic mayor. The actress has said she was paid to keep silent about a sexual encounter she had with Trump in 2006.

HUNTINGTON, N.Y.—Backhoes are finally clearing the earth for the development of Matinecock Court, an affordable-housing complex in this Long Island suburb that was first proposed 45 years ago. To housing advocates, a multifamily project first floated when Jimmy Carter was president is the ultimate example of unreasonably restrictive suburban zoning and the reason for a push by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul to change the rules. To Long Island officials, who have long been concerned about traffic and school crowding, Matinecock Court was a challenge to the inviolate need for local control over land-use decisions.

The aggressive legislative push comes as battles over gender and sexuality increasingly are being fought in U.S. classrooms, courtrooms and political campaigns. Republicans including former President Donald Trump have embraced restricting trans rights ahead of the 2024 White House race, a push that trans advocates fear will harm transgender children. Gender-affirming care covers a variety of treatments, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and, in exceedingly rare cases for trans people under 18, surgery. But many opponents of trans rights believe that the sex assigned at birth is immutable and distrust the prevailing opinions of medical associations with specialties in pediatrics, endocrinology and mental health. Governors in South Dakota and Utah have already signed into law gender-affirming care bans that state legislatures passed this year.

Roughly one year ago, a handful of crypto heavyweights made swaggering debuts on the Super Bowl ad roster, airing costly commercials with messages like “Don’t miss out” (FTX) and “Fortune favors the brave” (Crypto.com). Then came the swoon in crypto and the bankruptcy of FTX. Recently, trading firm OKX scuttled its plans to buy an ad in Super Bowl LVII when FTX began to dominate the news cycle. Coinbase aims to convey its confidence in crypto “while maintaining our position as the most trusted brand in the space,” Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch said. “I think that, especially after the FTX collapse, there has been a real need for that across the entire crypto space,” he said.

REUTERS/Jeenah MoonFeb 6 (Reuters) - New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday that he was lifting a controversial COVID-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers and the city's Department of Education employees. Adams noted that since more than 96% of the city's workers have taken the COVID vaccine "this is the right moment for this decision." The decision comes four months after New York ended a COVID vaccine mandate for private employers, and 10 months after the mayor lifted vaccine requirements for professional athletes and performers. The union representing New York City's 36,000 police officers, which has fought against the mandate in court, welcomed the mayor's decision, but said the "job is only half done."

Crump said he and the Nichols family had spoken with President Joe Biden on Friday and urged him to use Nichols' death to galvanize support for the act's passage. Nichols' mother was coping with her son's death by believing he was destined to change the world, Crump said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. Nichols' death is the latest high-profile example of police using excessive force against Black people and other minorities. Crump said Nichols' death should finally prompt lawmakers to act. The officers were charged on Thursday with second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct and oppression in Nichols' death and dismissed from the department.
Gross domestic product increased at a 2.9% annualized rate last quarter, the Commerce Department said in its advance fourth-quarter GDP growth estimate on Thursday. The economy grew at a 3.2% pace in the third quarter. Retail sales have weakened sharply over the last two months and manufacturing looks to have joined the housing market in recession. While the labor market remains strong, business sentiment continues to sour, which could eventually hurt hiring. Spending has been underpinned by labor market resilience as well as excess savings accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
