CNN —A reality show contestant who killed and ate a protected bird has been let off with a warning after New Zealand wildlife officials said cast members were tired, hungry and placed in a “unique” situation. Spencer “Corry” Jones, an American white water river guide, killed and ate the large, flightless weka during filming of “Race to Survive: New Zealand” last fall, CNN affiliate RNZ reported Tuesday. Swain said the producers of “Race to Survive” had a permit to film on public conservation land and were aware that protected species and plants could not be harvested or eaten. In a statement, “Race to Survive” production said it alerted authorities as soon as they became aware of the weka incident. New Zealand has a plethora of unique flora and fauna due to its long geological isolation from the supercontinent Gondwana, according to independent conservation organization Forest and Bird.

But interest has begun to wane in recent years, with the number of people on keto diets dropping by 4% in 2023. Some doctors have called keto the worst diet for healthDespite hitting its stride in the mid-2010s, the keto diet has been around for at least a century. Both saturated fat and processed meats are popular in low-carb diet variations like "dirty keto," full of junk food. Then, when my husband and I got married, we stopped eating meat altogether — and almost 50 years later, we're still eating a vegetarian diet, though we occasionally eat fish. If Mr. Trump has these qualities, Americans have never seen them in action on behalf of the nation’s interests. This record shows what can happen to a country led by such a person: America’s image, credibility and cohesion were relentlessly undermined by Mr. Trump during his term. Mr. Trump has shown, repeatedly, that he does not. The lack of moral grounding undermines Mr. Trump even in areas where voters view him as stronger and trust him more than Mr. Biden, like immigration and crime. But there are good reasons to worry about whether that would happen again, as Mr. Trump works harder to surround himself with people who enable rather than check his most insidious impulses.

When aides to President Biden heard in recent days that George Clooney, as close a figure as there is in Hollywood to royalty, planned to publicly break with Mr. Biden in an essay that cast doubt on his re-election chances, panic set in from Wilmington to Beverly Hills. Could Mr. Clooney be persuaded not to publish it? Mr. Katzenberg, who moonlights as a top Biden official and has worked with Mr. Clooney on philanthropy for decades, reached out to him to see if there was an off-ramp, according to three people familiar with the matter. There was not — Mr. Clooney published his essay in The New York Times, and the president’s relationship with Hollywood was torn asunder. The fallout from the Clooney essay has ricocheted across the worlds of politics and entertainment — and onto Mr. Katzenberg himself.

Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.
