GE HealthCare on Thursday announced it is teaming up with Amazon Web Services to build new generative artificial intelligence models and tools that can efficiently analyze complex medical data. GE HealthCare, which offers medical imaging, ultrasound, patient care and pharmaceutical diagnostic solutions, believes generative AI can help. GE HealthCare offers its own AI tools, but its partnership with AWS will supply the company with the technical infrastructure required to quickly build generative AI models and tools at scale. GE HealthCare will use AWS' solutions like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker, according to a release Thursday. Kass-Hout said GE HealthCare maintains rigorous testing and standards before bringing products to market, and the same will be true with the generative AI applications it develops.

Washington, DC, public transportation services — including trains and buses — begin experiencing delays, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

Bangladesh students vowed on July 18 to continue nationwide protests against civil service hiring rules, rebuffing an olive branch from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who pledged justice for seven killed in the demonstrations. Bangladesh soldiers patrolled the deserted streets of the capital Dhaka on Saturday during a curfew meant to quell deadly students-led protests against government job quotas that have killed at least 105 people this week. In addition to the deaths, the clashes have injured thousands, according to data from hospitals across Bangladesh. With the death toll climbing and police unable to contain the protests, Hasina's government imposed the national curfew and deployed the military. Those venturing out on the streets had their identification cards inspected by army personnel at different check points, TV footage showed.

The reality, however, was much more mundane: a botched software update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.
