Elon Musk recently laid off more Twitter employees working on the platform's trust and safety efforts, roles typically crucial to keeping a social media platform safe for advertisers. While this layoff only affected a handful of people, five to 10, it was focused entirely on workers in trust and safety. Such workers are responsible for overseeing daily communications on Twitter, and mitigating the appearance and spread of toxic content, mainly so businesses feel comfortable advertising on the platform. As Musk courts controversy , conspiracy , and antisemitism , the advertising business on Twitter, renamed X, has plummeted by more than half and usage has waned . By mid-November, Twitter's trust and safety team had no engineers and no agents, as Insider reported, leaving the team mainly in the hands of people who did administrative work.

The raw materials for creating AI

The AI models behind this technology are built using high-quality datasets from millions of different sources. These are the raw materials for model "training," in industry parlance. Nvidia GPUs are the main hardware required for AI model training. AdvertisementAdvertisementOver 8,000 authors, including Margaret Atwood and James Patterson, signed an open letter demanding compensation from AI companies for using their works to train AI without permission. Got a tip or insights about the leading AI companies OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Meta?

More companies are quietly updating privacy policies to use collected user data to train AI models. More companies have been trying to do what they can to stop their data from being scraped and saved to expand datasets needed to train AI models. Microsoft's updated Terms , for which it highlighted changes going into effect Sept. 30, added a new five-point section on AI Services. The other four points cover Microsoft disallowing any use of its AI services for other AI tools. At the end of August, it created a simple form where users could "request" to opt out of their data being used to train AI models.

Twitter usage surged in the early days of Elon Musk's ownership. Twitter has gained usually 15 million to 30 million users a month since 2011, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It gained just 10 million users between August and September of this year. So far in September, daily users are down to 249 million, a roughly 2% decrease since July when daily users were at nearly 253 million. Monthly users are down by about the same percentage, now at 393 million users from 398 million in July.

Now, many news outlets are seeing an increase in downloads and usage of their apps. Meta's decision to block user access to news in Canada is not having an entirely negative effect on the country's major publishers. The Globe and Mail in August saw a 98% increase in app downloads and a 27% increase in daily users; CTV News saw a 157% increase in app downloads and an 83% increase in daily usage; La Presse saw a 32% increase in app downloads and an 8% increase in usage; and The National Post's downloads were up almost 10%, with daily usage up 3%. Meanwhile, CBC News saw downloads and daily usage remain relatively flat. "In recent weeks, we have seen an increase in CTV News app downloads, which demonstrates the importance of having access to online news from a Canadian perspective."

Walter Isaacson said Elon Musk considered spending less time at Twitter to focus on AI and SpaceX. "With AI coming, I'm sort of wondering whether it's worth spending that much time thinking about Twitter," Isaacson said Musk told him in March at a meeting between the biographer, Musk, and a Neuralink director who gave birth to two of his children. Isaacson said Musk first discussed his plans to build an AI company at the March meeting. The biographer said Musk told him he plans to run the company himself. It is one of six companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, and X, that Musk is helping to lead.

Twitter acquired Squad, a screen sharing app, in 2020. Twitter acquired Squad at the end of 2020, in a cash and stock deal worth $36 million, Sutin said. The other founder of the app is Esther Crawford, who became a director at Twitter after the acquisition. Squad's rise in popularity "caught the attention" of Twitter, according to the lawsuit, and it was acquired not long after. As soon as Musk officially acquired Twitter, he ousted its entire C-suite including Agrawal.

Mercedes is headed for the release of a new EV that gets more mileage on a single charge than Tesla. Its current range on a single charge, Mercedes says, is 466 miles, beating by about 70 miles the longest proposed range of any Tesla, the electric car company run by Elon Musk. "This car is extremely important for innovation reasons and to push the limits for what we can do with a series car." Some Tesla drivers have noticed that the range they could actually drive on a single charge was often half of what was promoted by the car company.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAI is undermining the web's grand bargain, and a decades-old handshake agreement is the only thing standing in the way. Now, though, generative AI and large language models are changing the mission of web crawlers radically and rapidly. Without a supply of potential consumers, there's little incentive for content creators to let web crawlers continue to suck up free data online. It's also open to manipulation, especially given the voracious appetite for quality AI data. Because robots.txt is voluntary, web crawlers can also simply ignore the blocking instructions and siphon the information from a site anyway.

That benefit is disappearing as Snap wants to get people in the office at least four days a week. Instead of the food benefit, workers have been told to "explore" on-site lunch offerings. Snap is ending a benefit for employees to buy food during the work week. It also afforded Snap employees who worked in other offices that did not offer catered food some parity on a company perk they'd never had access to.
