Fran Drescher with SAG-AFTRA members at a SAG-AFTRA news conference today. If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble," she said at Thursday's press conference. Drescher said she started negotiations thinking a strike could be avoided, and was shocked by what she said was the corporate greed of management's proposals. And she concluded the press conference saying she expects the general public will support the actors in the strike, and issuing a warning that foretold what could happen if they don't win. "If we let this happen to us, dollars to donuts it going to happen to you and your family, your children and everyone you work with too.

Since 2020, California has led a contentious experiment in high school math. — loosened their admissions criteria, telling high schools that they would consider applicants who had skipped Algebra II, a cornerstone of math instruction. In its place, students could take data science — a mix of math, statistics and computer science without widely agreed upon high school standards. Allowing data science, the universities said, was an “equity issue” that could send more students to college. On Wednesday, the State Board of Education voted to remove its endorsement of data science as a substitute for Algebra II as part of new guidelines for K-12 schools.

AI chatbots like ChatGPT are based on large language models that are fed a ton of information. Here's how computer science experts explain how the bots know what words to say next. Bots like ChatGPT are also trained on large amounts of conversations that have taught machines how to interact with human users. But watch out for what chatbots don't knowWhat happens when you ask it a question it doesn't know the answer to? That's where chatbots create the most trouble because of an inherent trait — they don't know what they don't know.

There was a time when companies doing big deals could turn to only a handful of firms for advice. But the booming demand for counsel on acquisitions, activist investors and corporate crises has widened that circle and, increasingly, led to the creation of new firms. The latest example is Collected Strategies, which is being started by several executives at the communications firm Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher, along with Ed Hammond, a longtime mergers-and-acquisitions reporter for Bloomberg. “Communications advice needs to as well.”The firm is starting in a period of elevated scrutiny of Wall Street’s activities. While overall deal making has been down, last year was the busiest in four years for activist investors, who take stakes in companies and demand change.

Wildfire smoke turns the air orange for the same reason clear air makes the sky look blue — it has to do with what kind of tiny particles are in the air, how many there are and what wavelength color they block. As it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, the sun’s light hits all of the molecules and particles in the air. Wildfire smoke blocks the shorter wavelengths — like yellow, green and blue — leaving just the red and orange to pass through. The light has more atmosphere to pass through before it gets to our eyes, which amplifies the colors and how thick the smoke looks in the air. The stock market could see significant upside as more companies adopt artificial intelligence, according to Goldman Sachs. The potential stock market upside depends on profitability gains sparked by AI. "Increased economy-wide output could translate into increased revenues and earnings for S&P 500 companies, even beyond those firms directly involved in the development of AI," Hammond said. And the upside in AI isn't limited to companies that make chips that enable the technology, like Nvidia. But there are also risks to Goldman's forecast that could limit potential upside.

“Everyone recognizes that Ukraine needs a modernized air force and everyone knows that. It’s going to take a considerable length of time, effort, money, to build that air force,” Milley said. Russia’s has hundreds of fourth and fifth generation fighters and bombers, dwarfing the smaller, older Ukrainian fleet or military aircraft. The flow of aerial defense systems has been effective at forcing Russia’s air force to largely remain out of Ukrainian air space and prevent Russia from establishing aerial supremacy over Ukraine. With an aerial defense system established across critical parts of Ukraine, the effort has now shifted to bolstering Ukraine’s air force with modern Western fighter jets.

A detention hearing for suspected document leaker Jack Teixeira is underway now in Massachusetts. A judge will decide whether he should continue to be detained as he faces charges under the Espionage Act. He is accused of posting a trove of US classified documents to social media. Meanwhile, the suspect's lawyers argued that he no longer has access to classified documents and accused prosecutors of exaggerating Teixeira’s danger to national security, according to a Thursday morning court filing. Defense lawyers suggested that Teixeira be released into the custody of his father, a military veteran and former correctional officer.

A patient prepares to take Mifepristone, the first medication in a medical abortion, at Alamo Women's Clinic in Carbondale, Illinois. Along with misoprostol, mifepristone is one of the drugs used for an abortion via medication, as opposed to surgery. Someone having a medication abortion takes mifepristone and then, after 24 to 48 hours, takes misoprostol. Side effects of mifepristone: Mifepristone usually doesn’t have many side effects, doctors say, but as with any drug, there can be short-lived ones. Preliminary data published February 2022 from the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organization focused on sexual and reproductive health that supports abortion rights, showed that medication abortion accounted for 53% of all abortions in the US.
“I could never have foreseen him doing that,” said John Powell, a former high school classmate. Teixeira grew up in the suburbs of Providence, Rhode Island, according to public records and graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth High School in neighboring Massachusetts in 2020. He toted around a “dictionary-sized” book on firearms and another about “tanks, planes and submarines,” former classmates told CNN. “A lot of people were wary of him,” said Brooke Cleathero, a former classmate in both high school and middle school. FBI agents interviewed at least one person who said a young man later identified as Teixeira began posting “what appeared to be classified information” on a server in December.

March 15 (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said in a report on Wednesday that it expects commercial aircraft financing to reach near pre-pandemic levels in 2023, highlighting strong industry fundamentals. The carrier released its outlook amid increased signs of distress in the banking sector as shares of Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) slumped on funding concerns. Banks have already been under pressure following the recent collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB.O) and Signature Bank (SBNY.O). The planemaker did not immediately respond when asked if its outlook takes into account the stress in the banking sector. Boeing, which annually reviews aircraft financing trends, said it sees increased interest from aircraft financiers and investors to aid commercial airplane deliveries.

The European Central Bank is still leaning towards a half-percentage-point rate hike on Thursday, despite turmoil in the banking sector, given high inflation, a source close to its Governing Council told Reuters. European stocks slipped 0.9% (.STOXX) in early trade but held above three-month lows reached on Monday as panic gripped world markets following SVB's collapse last week. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) rose 0.9%, having slid 1.7% on Tuesday. Japan's Nikkei index was flat (.N225) while an index of Japanese banks, which has slid 8% this week, jumped over 3% (.IBNKS.T). There had been worries that stronger-than-expected data might lead the Fed to go for jumbo-sized hikes to battle inflation.
