THE MAKING OF ANOTHER MAJOR MOTION PICTURE MASTERPIECE, by Tom Hanks. Sidelined by the pandemic, some actors fired up ceramics or sang fragments of “Imagine.” Tom Hanks, one of the most prominent to contract an early case of Covid, bounced back by making a run at the Great American Novel. Alas, it is more Forrest Gump trotting from coast to coast than Sully landing on the Hudson. Titled “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece,” the book arrives at a crossroads for Hollywood. The novel also acknowledges a fading time when leading actors, even avatars of Everyman decency like the author, were royalty: their work shown not in living rooms but red-velvet-swagged “palaces.”
Christopher Gehring left his engineering job to take a career break and focus on his health. For me, taking a career break was the best thing I ever could have done for myself. Last year, my job — I'm an engineer who worked at a medical-device company — had become very stressful. As much as I've enjoyed this career break, I'm ready to get back to work. I'm going to give 100% of my effort during work hours, and when I'm off, I'm off.
Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon, left, was fired by the school. WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol told U.S. lawmakers on Thursday it is necessary to speed up trilateral cooperation with Japan and the United States to counter increasing North Korean nuclear threats, and said the world must not "shy away" from promoting freedom for the North. "Korea will never forget the great American heroes who fought with us to defend freedom," he said. On Wednesday, Yoon met President Joe Biden at the White House and the United States pledged to give South Korea more insight into its nuclear planning over any conflict with North Korea, amid anxiety over Pyongyang's growing arsenal of missiles and bombs. Yoon became the seventh South Korea leader to address Congress, underscoring the close relationship between Seoul and Washington. "We will actively work to safeguard the freedom of the people of Ukraine and support their efforts in reconstruction," he said.
Legendary Female Artists on the Younger Women Who Inspire Them

The Artist’s Mind What it feels like for female artists to wrestle with ambition, ego, ambivalence and inheritance. That isolation has, historically, been especially true for women artists, some of the most celebrated of whom have seen “writer” or “painter” or “filmmaker” treated as a secondary part of their identity. For this issue, we asked legendary female artists to tell us about a younger woman whose work excites them and gives them hope. But for the current generation of women artists, who have come of age with models who more closely resemble them, identity seems more like a source of community than a trap. Women artists, born into a Babylon of exclusion and possibility, reveal that creative inheritance is as promiscuous as legal inheritance is strict.

Cramer on what happens when you stick with great American companiesMad Money host Jim Cramer weighs in on investing on American companies.
In a challenging market, investors should look to "well-known, great American companies with beaten down stocks," CNBC's Jim Cramer said Wednesday. There are three companies that Cramer thinks have compelling stories and strength, even if their stock prices don't necessarily reflect that: Johnson & Johnson , Eli Lilly , and Procter & Gamble . At Johnson & Johnson, a bruising yearslong battle with lawsuits linked to the company's talc powder battered the stock, Cramer said. And finally, at P&G, Cramer thinks that there's a "grudging recognition" that the stock of the consumer goods company is underpriced. How about the fact that they're amazing American companies, with stocks that get cheaper as they go down," Cramer said.

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to secure the 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker of the House in January. The House was called to order at noon and the chamber moved to the first order of business: electing the speaker. The House held three more unsuccessful votes for speaker that day before adjourning just after 2 p.m. The date was Feb. 2, 1856, two months after the first speaker vote.
