Amazon is requiring its workers to return to the office full time. He noted that the company's three-day-a-week policy, instituted in 2023, had only reinforced the view that a full return was necessary. Amazon joins a growing list of major U.S. firms returning to a five-days-a-week office policy, including Boeing, JP Morgan Chase and UPS. However, according to data from FlexIndex, a firm that tracks company office policies, a majority of U.S. firms still offer hybrid arrangements. TikTok has 15 minutes to fight for its life
  + stars: | 2024-09-16 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
The law Biden signed seeks to ban TikTok on Americans’ personal devices unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, quickly sells TikTok to someone else — which may effectively end the app as we currently know it. TikTok will not get the luxury of a full trial to argue for its continued existence in its current form. But it won’t be alone: A group of TikTok creators also suing the Biden administration will go next, with 10 minutes to speak. Court filings show that TikTok and US national security officials had hammered out a draft proposal to address the security concerns. The question is whether all that amounts to enough influence over ByteDance and TikTok to gain access to US TikTok users’ data, in spite of the guardrails promised by Project Texas.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau last week said it had reached a $120 million settlement with student loan giant Navient that could lead to compensation for hundreds of thousands of borrowers. The CFPB accused Navient of steering student loan borrowers into expensive forbearances, miscalculating their bills and tarnishing their credit reports. Under the terms of the settlement, Navient is banned from servicing federal student loans ever again. A Navient spokesperson said the company disagreed with the consumer watchdog's charges. As part of the deal, $100 million will be used to make payments to impacted customers, as determined by the CFPB.

The AI boom will nearly double demand for copper, mining firm BHP told the Financial Times. Copper is a necessary material for electrification, and AI data centers will require power capacity to expand. Chief Financial Officer Vandita Pant told the Financial Times that AI data centers will account for 6% to 7% of copper demand by 2050. These conditions caused copper prices to peak to a record high in May, though China's economic tumble has helped deflate prices to $9,207 a ton. Previously, the bank also considered copper prices to benefit from the expansion of AI data centers.
