New York CNN —Meta’s Oversight Board has found that the phrase “From the River to the Sea,” used to express Palestinian support, did not break the company’s hate speech policies. The Board said it reviewed three cases involving the use of “From the River to the Sea” on Facebook and said that all appeals to remove the content were closed without human review. Those users then appealed to the Board, which exists for users to challenge Meta’s appeals process on Facebook, Instagram or Threads. In Germany, using the slogan “From the river to the sea” is now a criminal offense. The slogan used in the cases had wide reach through Meta’s platforms.

Most places don't have air conditioning. Ashley PackardAfter a tiring seven-hour flight from Boston to Frankfurt, a three-hour drive from the airport, and six flights of stairs to our apartment, we arrived in Düsseldorf and quickly learned air conditioning isn't really a thing in Germany. Instead, we cranked the metal shutters down early in the morning to keep hot air out and rolled them up at night to let in cool air. We also stayed hydrated, added ice cubes to the cats' water bowls, tried not to use the oven, took cool showers, and ordered a standing fan. It blew my mind to learn that only about one in eight German households use air conditioning.

Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Geely Holding, had been among the first legacy carmakers to promise a complete switch to EVs. The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The move means Volvo Cars follows in the footsteps of other industry players in scaling back its EV ambitions. Shares of Volvo Cars traded more than 4% lower Wednesday.

London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Elly Ross, a head of product at an e-commerce company who is starting her own candy shop, "lil sweet treat." I was going on a walk to lunch one day and I passed by the unit that is now "lil sweet treat" — and I immediately knew that this was the spot for the candy shop. Product management skills in the candy shop worldA lot of the skills that I cultivated as a PM have been so helpful in building "lil sweet treat." When you buy this large amount of candy, you have to transfer that candy from one of the candy store bags into another vessel at home. Every time that your shopper reaches for a sweet treat, they see the "lil sweet treat" branding associate that sweet treat with "lil sweet treat."

Just as importantly, it’s also sent a political message to Kyiv’s allies that has changed the prevailing narrative of the war - that Ukrainian forces are doomed to fight an endless rearguard action against superior Russian firepower. A Ukrainian soldier walks past at a city hall in Sudzha, Kursk region, Russia, Friday, Aug. 16, 2024. But Ukrainian forces have shown that the conflict is not a one-way street. Security at a NATO air base in western Germany has been raised because of intelligence information pointing to a “potential threat,” and all staff not essential to missions have been sent home as a precaution, NATO said. The Geilenkirchen air base, near the border with the Netherlands, is where the alliance’s Airborne Warning and Control System, or AWACS, aircraft are based. A post on the NATO AWACS fleet’s account on social media network X late Thursday night announcing that “we raised the security level” did not elaborate on the nature of the potential threat. It said that “operations continue as planned.”The Geilenkirchen base said Friday that it had nothing to add to the statement and “the situation at the moment is unchanged.”German news agency dpa said a reporter saw police cars on the grounds of the air base. German media reported that drones had been spotted over a chemical park in Brunsbuettel, on the North Sea coast.

Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.
