Fintech Stocks Did Worse Than Fin or Tech in 2022

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc. is among the holdings of the ARK Fintech Innovation ETF, which fell 65% last year. The banks of the future are having a rough present. Financial-tech companies, long hyped for their vision of bringing Silicon Valley-style innovation to the businesses of lending, investing and payments, underperformed both financial stocks and tech stocks more broadly in 2022. A vulnerability to higher interest rates, the disappearance of many pandemic-era catalysts and a more general reckoning for companies that followed growth-at-all-costs playbooks contributed to many fintech firms’ fall from grace.

The elder Andrés — who has drawn attention to Spanish food and helped put a spotlight on humanitarian disasters with his World Central Kitchen — can hardily contain himself. “Happiness happens when you mix different people and different colors and different places all in one plate,” José Andrés says onscreen. “Spain is the excuse,” says José Andrés.

"The discovery of these new breeding areas is very important, especially for the hammerhead shark," said park ranger Eduardo Espinoza in a statement on Friday from the Galapagos National Park. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers the scalloped hammerhead shark, the species found in the Galapagos, as "critically endangered." Researchers spent months scouring the archipelago for possible nursery sites as part of a hammerhead shark monitoring program. Researchers are monitoring the nurseries to track the young shark population in nursery areas and to follow their migration patterns.

And rather than seeking out an experienced advisor, more and more of them are looking to these platforms for ideas on how to manage their money, as well as viral trends for growing it (fast). But who should they really trust at a time when misinformation on these platforms is rampant? And how can a trusted advisor meet them where they are?

"We had a big crash and I immediately started seeing water enter the plane. Passengers started to struggle to rescue themselves," Samuel said, describing the moments after the Precision Air flight to Bukoba plunged into the lake in northern Tanzania. In the hours and days after the accident, reports of survival and dramatic rescue efforts have started to emerge. Jackson dived into the water and managed to communicate with the pilots by signalling through the window, he told the BBC. By the time rescue workers reached the pilots, their air supply had run out and the pair were dead, authorities said.
BERLIN, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Germany wants dialogue with Washington rather than tit-for-tat measures to ease trade tensions triggered by the U.S Inflation Reduction Act, which could harm European businesses and industry, Germany's finance minister said on Monday. Christian Lindner said a task force set up between the United States and the European Union should address the issue urgently. "In everyone's interest, we will not enter a tit-for-tat but rather strengthen the sources of wealth and growth together," he added. Earlier on Monday, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the law was a major threat to European companies and that the EU must stand firm against it. It is very premature, in my view, to think about or be talking about pausing our rate hikes. The news sent those stocks reliant on China for growth — Starbucks, Estee Lauder and Wynn Resorts, among many others — higher. Or bad news could just be bad news if weak data signals a recession ahead. And good news could be good news: for example, if China reopens and U.S. companies exposed to the region see a boost in demand. The yen has tumbled on the widening spread between U.S. and Japanese interest rates, with the Fed's aggressive interest rates hikes contrasting sharply with the Bank of Japan's massive monetary stimulus. The minister echoed Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda's recent caution about any spill-over effects from aggressive monetary policy tightening by the United States on Japan and other countries. The Fed raised interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point this week, signalling that it may be near a turning point in its aggressive monetary policy tightening. The Japanese yen rose a marginal 0.07% to 148.155 per dollar on early trade on Friday, hovering below its 32-year low near 152 yen. Turning to currency intervention, Suzuki said Japan was not targeting any specific levels when intervening in the currency market to prop up the yen.

"Were dysfunction in this market to continue or worsen, there would be a material risk to UK financial stability," the BoE warned. One source at the Treasury said Kwarteng would not resign, and the government would not reverse its policy. A second person familiar with the situation said Truss still backed Kwarteng and they would announce further economic reforms soon. One source at the meeting said Kwarteng had asked the assembled finance bosses what they could do to calm markets. U.S. bond giant PIMCO said it would have less confidence in sterling than it did before last Friday's announcement.

European startups like Sequence and Numeral want to establish themselves as the region's leaders. In March, the valuation of Californian startup Modern Treasury spiked to $2 billion as it established itself as an early leader in the burgeoning FinOps sector. In Europe, FinOps startups have captured the attention of a wealth of venture capital firms hoping to be an early backer in the region's own Modern Treasury. The US payments market is notoriously fragmented with some 5,000 banks and no universal real-time settlements platform. Indeed, investment into European startups plummeted by 38% in the second quarter of the year to $23.7 billion, according to Crunchbase data.

North Jutland, DenmarkSouthern Europe swells with crowds during summer, and it can also get hot to the point of extremely uncomfortable in July and August. Temperatures in Seville and other spots in southern Spain recently exceeded the 110˚ Fahrenheit mark (43.3 Celsius). It’s just 40 minutes from the popular beaches of Taormina, which are flooded with “White Lotus” fans this summer. There are beaches all around the peninsula, but if you only hit two, Mylopotamos and Fakistra on the Aegean side are the can’t-miss spots.

A study from Australia is the first to scientifically document blue whales' killings by orcas. Orcas were observed devouring the nutrient-rich tongues of the giant blue whales. It includes details of how the killer whales swam inside the mouth of the enormous whales to eat their nutritionally rich tongue just before they died. A few weeks later, the next attack occurred when a blue whale calf was targeted. The final attack recorded by the study was on a 45-foot-long blue whale, chased for 15 miles in a 90-minute hunt.
