A Romance Bookstore Boom
  + stars: | 2024-07-07 | by ( Alexandra Alter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
There’s a boom in romance bookstores. They’re largely owned and operated by women, and have become vibrant community hubs for romance fans. As a reporter who covers publishing, I’ve been following the soaring sales for romance, which is by far the top-selling fiction genre. But the arrival of brick-and-mortar romance stores struck me as something new, and surprising. For a story in The Times, I visited romance stores in South Florida and Brooklyn, and talked to booksellers, publishers and fans of the genre, to find out why romance bookstores are suddenly thriving.

So far, the only part of Earth AI seems hell-bent on dominating is the power grid. AI data centers are doubling the pace of electricity demand growth in the US to the extent that demand could exceed supply in just two years without action, according to Bernstein Research. The potential shortfall could mean higher prices for the computing power AI developers of all sizes are clamoring for, along with ample opportunity for investors willing to build up supply. How are AI companies planning aheadIt's not just the total power needed for AI computing infrastructure, it's the unique cadence of the power need and the cooling AI chips require. Amazon is clearing some of these hurdles by colocating some data centers with nuclear power sites.

Lucy Lawless told Business Insider there was a "culture of anxiety" on the "Battlestar Galactica" set. AdvertisementLucy Lawless told Business Insider that she found it difficult joining "Battlestar Galactica" because of a "culture of anxiety" among the show's actors who didn't know if they would get killed off. Lawless joined the show's second season in 2005 as news reporter D'Anna Biers, who was later revealed to be a robotic Cylon named Number Three. The character faced plenty of twists — including dying and being resurrected several times — and Lawless stayed on "Battlestar Galactica" until it ended in 2009. Ismail Kadare, the Albanian novelist and poet who single-handedly wrote his isolated Balkan homeland onto the map of world literature, creating often dark, allegorical works that obliquely criticized the country’s totalitarian state, died in Tirana, Albania, on Monday. In a literary career that spanned half a century, Mr. Kadare (pronounced kah-dah-RAY) wrote scores of books, including novels and collections of poems, short stories and essays. He shot to international fame in 1970 when his first novel, “The General of the Dead Army,” was translated into French. Mr. Kadare’s name was floated several times for the Nobel Prize, but the honor eluded him. In 2005, he received the inaugural Man Booker International Prize (now the International Booker Prize), awarded to a living writer of any nationality for overall achievement in fiction.

A great book can challenge your perceptions, shape your worldview, and impart messages that stay with you forever. Six books that billionaire Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has read over the course of his life have left that sort of lasting effect. Most recently, in April, he released his audiobook memoir, "Losing and Finding My Virginity: The Full Story." Branson calls it "a very entertaining read that has always stayed with me." On "Start With Why," Branson says: "My key takeaway was that it doesn't matter what you do, but why you do it ….

CNN —As the conservative Supreme Court majority has won case after case in recent days, liberal dissenters are having their moment in the courtroom. Other justices stared out at spectators or down at notes, perhaps anticipating the next opinions, and dissents, to be revealed. The court majority reversed a 1984 milestone that required judges to defer to reasonable agency interpretations of their congressional mandates. Her oral dissent lasted nearly 15 minutes, about five minutes longer than Roberts’ rendition of the majority opinion. Your Hologram Doctor Will See You Now
  + stars: | 2024-06-29 | by ( Hank Sanders | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
A patient walks into a hospital room, sits down and starts talking to a doctor. Only in this case, the doctor is a hologram. It might sound like science fiction, but it is the reality for some patients at Crescent Regional Hospital in Lancaster, Texas. In May, the hospital group began offering patients the ability to see their doctor remotely as a hologram through a partnership with Holoconnects, a digital technology firm based in the Netherlands. Each Holobox — the company’s name for its 440-pound, 7-foot-tall device that displays on a screen a highly realistic, 3-D live video of a person — costs $42,000, with an additional annual service fee of $1,900.

And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

In his two-decade odyssey from Australian hacker to new-age media celebrity, hunted figure, perennial prisoner and finally, a free man, Julian Assange has always been easier to caricature than characterize. New York CNN —The OpenAI co-founder who left the high-flying artificial intelligence startup last month has announced his next venture: a company dedicated to building safe, powerful artificial intelligence that could become a rival to his old employer. Ilya Sutskever announced plans for the new company, aptly named Safe Superintelligence Inc., in a post on X Wednesday. Sutskever then worked on Google’s AI research team, before helping to found what would become the maker of ChatGPT. It’s also not clear exactly what the new company thinks of as “safety” in the context of highly powerful artificial intelligence technology. “By safe, we mean safe like nuclear safety as opposed to safe as in ‘trust and safety,’” Sutskever told Bloomberg in an interview published Tuesday.

Juneteenth is a celebration of that hard-fought Black freedom, observed in honor of June 19, 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, first learned from Union soldiers that they were free. To the Editor:Re “A Promise to Grads Who Show ‘No Promise,’” by Megan K. Stack (Opinion guest essay, June 9):Ms. Stack provides a dose of wisdom and perspective for parents, educators and teens about resilience and hope. A teenager I worked with years ago who struggled in high school with academic and other issues is now a successful adult. He recently got back in touch and told me that the biggest fiction from his childhood was how everyone back then said that if he didn’t excel in high school, he’d never amount to anything. Our youths are works in progress with different trajectories, which adults can tilt in either direction. Kids are sensitive to the implicit messages they get from their parents about failure and what constitutes success.

Now, a new study that looked at 5 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy suggests that seven candidates could potentially be hosting Dyson spheres — a finding that’s attracting scrutiny and alternate theories. If Dyson spheres really exist, what could they be used for? “Freeman Dyson said that we should dismantle Jupiter — the whole planet (for the raw materials).”That supercolossal scale probably means that Dyson spheres, if they exist at all, are very rare. “However, contamination by circumstellar debris disks, which mimic Dyson Sphere infrared signatures, remains a concern,” he added in an email. However, he added, the radiation fingerprint of the seven Dyson sphere candidates might be explained by natural phenomena as well.

GRETEL AND THE GREAT WAR, by Adam Ehrlich SachsInterwar Austria — baroque, violent, demented, doomed — flickers into view in Adam Ehrlich Sachs’s new novel, “Gretel and the Great War.” No staid work of history, this. Sachs draws from the madcap, darkly comic tradition of postmodern European fiction to reimagine the continent’s catastrophic destiny. The novel opens in November 1919, when Gretel, a young mute girl, is found wandering the streets of Vienna. The neurologist who eventually treats her receives a letter from a sanitarium patient claiming to be her father. But the novel’s charming formal sequence conceals an eruptive, ungovernable force.
