Aug 11 (Reuters) - Fox Corp (FOXA.O) said on Friday Viet Dinh would step down from his role as chief legal officer and become a special adviser to the company, effective Dec. 31. Dinh joined FOX as chief legal and policy officer in 2018 and has led the news company's legal, compliance, and regulatory matters, as well as overseen government affairs. This follows the $787.5 million defamation settlement earlier this year with Dominion Voting Systems, which sued Fox in 2021 over Fox News' coverage of false vote-rigging claims about the voting technology firm. Fox Corp. Chief Legal and Policy Officer Viet Dinh will step down from his post, months after the company agreed to pay a $787.5 million settlement to Dominion Voting Systems. The departure comes after Dinh advised the company through the lawsuit with the voting machines company, which was halted just short of a trial with the April settlement. While Fox agreed to the settlement, its hosts weren't required to talk about the lawsuit or make any public apology for on-air statements. Carlson and Dinh were among the Fox anchors and executives who were questioned as part of the lawsuit. "We are grateful that he will continue to serve FOX as Special Advisor where we will benefit from his counsel."

CNN —Fox Corporation on Friday said its top lawyer, Viet Dinh, will exit the company in a significant shakeup to its corporate ranks in the aftermath of the company’s historic $787 million settlement with election technology company Dominion Voting Systems. Dinh is the latest senior executive to depart after the historic Dominion settlement. Days after Fox settled the lawsuit with Dominion early this year, the company fired its star prime time host, the right-wing extremist Tucker Carlson. Dominion is just one of several high-profile lawsuits Fox has settled this year over its airing of false election conspiracy theories in 2020. In June, the network settled a lawsuit brought by former producer Abby Grossberg for $12 million.

Fox Corporation’s chief legal officer, Viet Dinh, is departing, the company announced on Friday, in a major shake-up at the company after the landmark $787.5 million settlement it paid to Dominion Voting Systems in April. Mr. Dinh, a former official in the George W. Bush White House who amassed considerable power inside Fox, will stay on through the rest of the year, Fox said. Mr. Dinh gave what some inside the company considered flawed advice during the Dominion suit, which exposed a pattern of deceptive coverage by Fox News after the 2020 election. He insisted that Fox was on firm legal footing and could take the case, if need be, all the way to the Supreme Court, where he believed the company would prevail on First Amendment grounds. Aug 10 (Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (NWSA.O) on Thursday beat quarterly profit estimates thanks to its cost-cutting efforts and talked up how generative artificial intelligence will support future results. For the first time, digital revenue accounted for over half of the company's total revenue for the full year, News Corp said. Higher digital subscription revenue in its fiscal fourth quarter helped News Corp absorb the impact of a 11.5% decline in advertising revenue. Revenue in its professional information business, which includes data and analytics platforms such as Oil Price Information Service, rose 10%. Excluding items, News Corp earned 14 cents per share, beating estimates of 8 cents, according to Refinitiv data.

The Dublin-based company said this made it the first online betting operator to turn a profit in the U.S and it did so six months ahead of schedule. Analysts at JPMorgan also noted a more cautious outlook on Australia, where Flutter's first half revenues fell by 1%. The U.S. profits contributed to reported EBITDA of 765 million pounds across the group, versus the 731 million pounds forecast by eight analyst polled by Refinitiv. Flutter and broadcaster Fox Corporation (FOXA.O) said last month it would close the FOX Bet sports betting platform. That would eclipse the record full year earnings of 1.4 billion pounds Flutter posted during the COVID-19 online betting boom of 2020.

The settlement Fox News may pay to Smartmatic could be around $1 billion, experts say. Disney's $177 million settlement for the infamous "pink slime" lawsuit in 2017 dropped to second place. Experts told Insider that the $787.5 million settlement is a strong benchmark for Smartmatic — and that Smartmatic will likely get more. Either way you slice it, using those baseline numbers brings you above the $787.5 million figure Fox paid to settle Dominion's lawsuit. "It's hard to extrapolate from the Dominion case in part because it never got litigated," Hans said.

All of this turmoil will be on investors' minds as the media industry kicks off its earnings season this week, with Netflix up first on Wednesday. Netflix, with a new advertising model and push to stop password sharing, looks the best positioned compared with legacy media giants. At the top of the list is contending with Disney's TV networks, as that part of the business appears to be in a worse state than Iger had imagined. The labor fight blew up just as the industry has moved away from streaming growth at all costs. Last week's ruling from a federal judge that Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of game publisher Activision Blizzard should move forward serves as a rare piece of good news for the media industry.

July 14 (Reuters) - Former Fox News (FOXA.O) host Tucker Carlson and former White House adviser Neil Patel are looking to raise funds to start a new media company that could potentially be anchored on Twitter, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The duo is looking to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to fund the company, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Carlson did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment, while Patel was not immediately reachable. In a video posted on Twitter in May, Carlson had said he would relaunch his show on the social media platform "soon". He released the first episode of his new show, "Tucker on Twitter", in June.

NEW YORK, July 12 (Reuters) - An Arizona man filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox News on Wednesday, alleging the network spread a conspiracy theory that he played a key role in the violent storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump. This years-long campaign of disinformation, Epps claims in his suit, "destroyed" the lives of Epps and his wife. The lawsuit in Delaware state court comes as voting technology company Smartmatic is suing Fox for defamation, and several months after the company settled defamation claims brought by Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million. The company acknowledged the court found some Fox claims about Dominion were false. Carlson told viewers in January 2022 that Epps was a "central figure" in the attack and "helped stage-manage the insurrection," according to the lawsuit.

Fox News was sued for defamation Wednesday by self-described Donald Trump supporter Ray Epps for "spreading falsehoods" that Epps was an undercover FBI agent who was responsible for encouraging a mob of Trump backers that invaded the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The suit by Epps, a former U.S. Marine, said that as Fox recently learned in the Dominion case, "its lies have consequences." He was among the throng of supporters of then-President Trump who gathered outside the Capitol on Jan. 6. The GOP presidential hopeful's own super PAC has been blunt about his campaign's struggles. According to reports in Rolling Stone and The New York Times, Rupert Murdoch and his influential News Corp empire are souring on the governor. "They are transactional and can smell a loser a mile away," an unnamed Fox insider told Rolling Stone, referring to Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, and top Fox News executives. Mr. Murdoch’s heir apparent, Lachlan, defended Fox and the Dominion settlement when speaking to investors on May 9. Contrast Mr. Murdoch with, say, Jamie Dimon, the chairman and chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, the nation’s largest bank. Does anyone at Fox or News Corp hold Mr. Murdoch accountable in the same way? One way to rein in Mr. Murdoch may lie with Smartmatic. Smartmatic, or even the recently filed shareholder lawsuit against Fox, could end up pressuring Fox, and indirectly News Corp, to scrap their dual-class stock structures.

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday he believes the 2024 Republican presidential nominee will "for sure" be able to unseat President Joe Biden — unless that person is former President Donald Trump. "It's a disaster if we nominate Trump," Ryan, who also serves on the board of Fox News' parent company, told CNBC's "Squawk Box." Cheney is right that Trump "could win," Ryan said, but "I think we lose with him." "I think we're much more likely to lose — we haven't won anything with him since he first won in '16," Ryan said of Trump.
