CNN —Federal Judge Aileen Cannon said Tuesday she had “a hard time seeing” any problems with the warrant the FBI obtained to search former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in the summer of 2022. Trump’s attorney Emil Bove had argued that the warrant was overly broad and unjustly allowed agents to search the entire Mar-a-Lago premises. Bove, like in other recent hearings in the classified documents case, wants the judge to hold even more hearings that could probe into the investigators’ work. “They purported to look for classified documents in a gym and a kitchen,” he added. A 40-year-old man was fatally stabbed at an Upper Manhattan subway station Friday night during a dispute with another person, the police said. When Judge Aileen M. Cannon presides over a hearing on Friday in former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case, she will spend the day considering well-trod arguments about an arcane legal issue in an unorthodox manner. It will be the latest example of how her unusual handling of the case has now become business as usual. Over the past several months, Judge Cannon, who was appointed by Mr. Trump in his final days in office, has made a number of decisions that have prompted second-guessing and criticism among legal scholars following the case. Many of her rulings, on a wide array of topics, have been confounding to them, often evincing her willingness to grant a serious hearing to far-fetched issues that Mr. Trump’s lawyers have raised in his defense. The issue that will be discussed on Friday in Federal District Court in Fort Pierce, Fla., is a motion by the defense to dismiss the charges in the case on the grounds that Jack Smith, the special counsel who filed them last spring, was improperly funded and appointed.

Under an 80-year-old treaty, the United States and Mexico share waters from the Colorado River and the Rio Grande, respectively. They say the lack of water from Mexico is propelling them into crisis, leaving the future of farming in the balance. Pain in both countriesThe water from Mexico goes to the Falcon and Amistad Reservoirs which straddle the border and provide water to homes as well and farms. To rely only on storms to reduce water scarcity would make Mexico “totally exposed to what nature decides about our water future,” UNAM’s Magnaña Rueda said. Ultimately, there needs to be a recognition that water sharing agreements must adapt to a changing climate, Rueda said.

An American Airlines passenger who kicked and spit at flight attendants and passengers and attempted to open the cabin door before she was secured to a seat with duct tape has been sued by the Federal Aviation Administration for $81,950, the largest-ever fine issued by the agency for unruly behavior. The passenger, Heather Wells, 34, of San Antonio, was traveling first class from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., on July 7, 2021, when about an hour into the flight she ordered a Jack Daniel’s and became agitated and said she “wanted out” of the plane, according to a lawsuit filed on June 3 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. Ms. Wells began running toward the back of the plane, where she dropped to her knees in the aisle and began “talking incoherently to passengers, before crawling back toward the main cabin,” the lawsuit said. When a flight attendant responded, Ms. Wells “became verbally aggressive and told the flight attendant that she would ‘hurt him’ if he didn’t get out of her way,” according to the court document.

American cities are shaped by the accumulation of many small choices across time: to put a park here, to lay a sewer there, to rezone this commercial strip or redesign that roadway. But every now and then, a momentous decision is made — to reverse the Chicago River, to construct the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, to move a highway underground in Boston’s Big Dig. And it changes what’s possible for years to come, altering a city’s growth, its economic prospects or the very nature of its public space. Congestion pricing could have been such a turning point in New York, according to proponents for whom the policy promised not just new revenue for mass transit, but also a fundamentally novel approach to reining in the cost of cars in an American city center. Kathy Hochul’s decision to halt it may be remembered as a turning point, too.
