An “American hero,” is how Republican colleagues describe Scalise after the 2017 shooting and on Wednesday, a narrow majority of them nominated him as their next House speaker following the unprecedented ouster of the former speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy rose to become Majority Leader, and Scalise the Majority Whip. One early morning three years later, Scalise and other Republican lawmakers gathered at a grassy park in the suburbs outside of Washington to practice for the upcoming congressional baseball game. When McCarthy seized the gavel in January once Republicans regained the majority, Scalise won the No. Late Wednesday, the speaker's office became a revolving door as holdout Republican lawmakers met with Scalise bringing their concerns, complaints and demands.

Chiu, asked by reporters at parliament about what lessons Taiwan has learned from Israel's conflict with Palestinian Hamas militants, said the ministry had set up a task force to monitor the situation. Taiwan holds presidential and parliamentary elections in January, which the main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has cast as a choice between war and peace. The KMT has accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of taking Taiwan to the brink of war by intentionally provoking China, which it strongly denies. Senior DPP lawmaker Wang Ting-yu, responding on his Facebook page, criticised the KMT for not condemning China and its threats against Taiwan. Israel is an even smaller nation than Taiwan and likewise lives under constant threat," he told an audience that included Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

CNN —New images from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed surprising pairs of planet-like objects in the Orion Nebula that have never been detected before. The Orion Nebula, a glowing cloud of dust and gas, is one of the brightest nebulae in the night sky and identifiable as the sword in the Orion constellation. But no existing theories explain how the JuMBOs formed, or why they’re present in the Orion Nebula, McCaughrean said. This Webb image shows the full survey of the inner Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster, captured in long wavelengths of light. Meanwhile, other research focused on different star-forming regions could reveal whether JuMBOs are elsewhere beyond the Orion Nebula.

Mueller magic gives Bayern Munich 2-1 win over Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Thomas Mueller came off the bench to set up the winning goal for fellow substitute Mathys Tel as Bayern Munich came from a goal down to beat Denmark's FC Copenhagen 2-1 in their Champions League Group A clash at the Parken Stadium on Tuesday. Bayern did not manage a shot on target until late in the first half as Copenhagen's compact defence neutralised the threat offered by the pace of Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane on the Munich flanks. Making his 144th appearance in the Champions League, Mueller wasted no time getting involved as he crossed for Leon Goretzka, but the midfielder's header drifted wide of the target. The victory left Bayern top of the group on six points, two ahead of Galatasaray, who beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford to leave United bottom. Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich paid tribute to both their squad strength and their goalkeeper as they stretched their unbeaten run away from home in the Champions League group stage to 18 games.

If you want to finance a big purchase like a car or wedding in 2024, don't expect to get much of a break on interest rates. Instead, focus on paying down high-interest debt, especially credit cards, if you can. Since the Fed started raising interest rates in March 2020, the average interest rate for credit cards has climbed from 16% to nearly 21%, according to Bankrate data. This could include credit cards, but also mortgages, student loans, home equity lines of credit and personal loans. For instance, the monthly payment for a $400,000 mortgage would increase by about $500 if the interest rate were to increase from 5% to 7%.

Taipei, Taiwan CNN —Taiwan’s defense ministry has urged Beijing to stop its “persistent military harassment,” after it detected more than 100 Chinese warplanes close to the island in a 24-hour span between Sunday and Monday. The number of warplanes recorded posed “severe challenges to the Taiwan Strait and regional safety,” the ministry said in a statement. According to a flight map provided by the ministry, 40 of the 103 Chinese warplanes crossed the median line on the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s self-declared air defense identification zone (ADIZ). [1/3] United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain joins UAW members who are on a strike, on the picket line at the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, U.S., September 15, 2023. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook Acquire Licensing RightsWAYNE, Michigan, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Hundreds of people, including auto workers on the night shift and their supporters, gathered at a Ford (F.N) assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan as members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union walked off the job to begin a historic strike. "This is what union looks like," said Mike Lester, a supporter who works at a supplier to the major automakers. But UAW President Shawn Fain has said Ford could have funded better pay and benefits for workers if it curtailed stock buybacks and dividends to shareholders. As the strike began, Fain and Debbie Dingell, a Democratic U.S. representative from Michigan, were among the high-profile visitors to Ford's Wayne plant, where about 3,300 UAW members assemble popular Bronco SUVs and Ranger pickup trucks.

And now, Shawn Fain is representing nearly 150,000 auto workers in one of the biggest labor strikes in decades. Referring to Biblical scripture, Fain asked union members: "Are you willing to have faith and move that mountain? The Wednesday before contract expiration, he said UAW members must fight for a better contract "by any means necessary" - one of Malcolm X's most quoted phrases. That six-week strike cost GM $3.6 billion and stressed the finances of UAW members. Company executives have said the UAW's demands will make them uncompetitive as the shift to EVs offsets the profits delivered by the combustion trucks UAW members build.
