The latest national polls show President Joe Biden's lead over Donald Trump slipping away. Biden's approval rating is shrinking, and Trump now leads in several polls of likely voters. AdvertisementSuper Tuesday is over — and with it any real prospect that anyone bar President Joe Biden and Donald Trump will take their party's nominations. AdvertisementFour major national polls released this week show former President Donald Trump ahead of Biden, with Trump's lead ranging from two to five points among registered voters. While the race is tight and the road to November is long, Trump appears to have the upper hand for now.

Mitch McConnell is stepping down, and Republican senators have months to decide who succeeds him. The end of his reign marks a shift in the GOP, but Trump won't get to fully decide the next leader. But one thing's for sure: Trump's not going to hand-pick the next Senate GOP leader. House Republicans first chose House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to be their candidate, only handing the nomination to Jordan after Scalise dropped out. It will be important for the eventual GOP leader to demonstrate that he or she could work with Trump if he's elected, but it won't be the only thing.

Opinion | Nikki Haley’s Last Ditch

to lie in the last Ditch; intimating, that he would dispute every Inch of Ground with the Enemy, and at last would die defending the Liberties of his Country.”And that’s how it seems we got the phrase “the last ditch.”Nikki Haley, too, is in her last ditch. As I write, it looks like Donald Trump will trounce her in the G.O.P.’s Michigan primary by an even wider margin than in his South Carolina victory on Saturday. The Koch network has withdrawn its financial support for her. Super Tuesday is next week, and chances are strong that Trump will sweep all 15 states in play, along with those he’s already won. Too bad only 27 percent of voters bother to participate in party primaries on average, according to a 2022 analysis, ceding the field to the most motivated partisans.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Former US President Donald Trump will be “against Americans” if he chooses to support Russia over Ukraine, the war-torn country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday. Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins in Kyiv, Zelensky said he “can’t understand how Donald Trump can be on the side of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”“It’s unbelievable,” he added. Zelensky said that he believed Trump — who also claimed he would end the conflict in one day if elected — did not understand Putin’s goals. “I think Donald Trump doesn’t know Putin,” Zelensky said. “He doesn’t understand it, of course, God bless you don’t have the war on your territory.”

Of the two main candidates that you’re talking about, Joe Biden refers to anyone who doesn’t support him as fascist. Donald Trump refers to anybody that doesn’t support him as vermin. I call everybody who supports me or doesn’t support me Americans. Biden did once call the “philosophy” behind Trump’s movement “almost like semi-fascism,” but he did not go so far as to label the philosophy fascist, let alone to say any American who doesn’t support Biden is fascist. This time, the former South Carolina governor avoided declaring that Biden calls anyone who doesn’t support him fascist or all Trump supporters fascist.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will win South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, CNN projects, further tightening his grip on the nomination and leaving his last remaining major rival, Nikki Haley, to consider her dwindling options. But his romp in South Carolina, which twice elected Haley its governor, might be his most impressive of this campaign. He has emerged, since dropping out of the primary and endorsing Trump, as one of the former president’s favorite surrogates and a potential running mate. “South Carolina is Trump country,” Scott declared to the delighted crowd. With Judge Juan Merchan’s proclamation last week that jury selection in the Manhattan prosecution of Donald Trump will begin on March 25, it is time for a reappraisal of the case. Mr. Bragg will face tough challenges ahead, fueled by lingering skepticism that critics have harbored about the strength of the evidence and whether Mr. Trump has been unfairly targeted. To understand why this case matters, think about a precedent — an earlier episode of an election-related felony and its cover-up. That was the Watergate scandal, which hung over Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign in 1972. Because the investigation was unresolved, Mr. Nixon’s nefarious conduct worked — he was in the White House when the full revelations came out later, to devastating effect.

Donald Trump will likely run out of legal defense funds by summer, Bloomberg reported. The former president faces substantial legal fees as he fights four criminal cases. Earlier this week, a New York judge ordered Trump to pay $355 million in a civil fraud case ruling. Republican presidential candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a pre-trial hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court on February 15, 2024 in New York City. A judge on Thursday said that jury selection in the New York hush money trial of former President Donald Trump will begin March 25, and estimated that the trial will last six weeks. Trump, who was in Manhattan Supreme Court for the hearing Thursday, will be the first former president to stand trial in a criminal case. His lawyer Todd Blanche called the trial date a "great injustice" and "election interference, as Trump is seeking the GOP presidential nomination. In addition to the hush money case, he faces three other pending criminal cases, all of which have a chance of going to trial this year.

CNN —President Joe Biden is poised to win delegates in the Nevada presidential primary Tuesday as he marches toward the Democratic nomination. But former President Donald Trump will have to wait until Thursday, when the state Republican Party holds its caucuses. What’s clear, though, is that Biden and Trump face only nominal opposition, and both are expected to end the week winners of Nevada delegates to their parties’ nominating conventions. On the Democratic primary ballot, Biden faces nominal opposition from a dozen candidates, including author Marianne Williamson. The fractured process is the result of a 2021 state law that scrapped Nevada’s presidential caucuses in favor of government-run primaries.

Trump is going to be the nominee of the Republican Party unless something drastic happens over the next few months,” said Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl. Republicans are ready to get there as well.”The confidence among the body of 168 RNC committee members reflected the former president’s dominance and enduring grip over much of the GOP. Still, Shawn Steel, a RNC committee member from California, brushed off the danger of that scenario for the GOP ticket. Still, other RNC committee members worry that the multiple court cases could distract from making the election about Biden’s record. “The criticisms generally at (RNC chair Ronna McDaniel) are coming from Trumpers,” said Bill Palatucci, an RNC committee member from New Jersey who sometimes clashes with the more pro-Trump Republicans.

CNN —The world once again is trying to parse the stance of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. After North Korea was defeated, the fighting stopped with a 1953 armistice but a peace agreement was never reached. Kim has certainly been signaling that something fundamental has shifted and he clearly wants the world to take his threats seriously. For decades the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea or DPRK, has had two explicit goals. The warning about North Korea cannot be ignored, and the US, South Korea and Japan should update their planning.

By Jack QueenNEW YORK (Reuters) -A ruling in the New York state attorney general's $370 million civil fraud case against former U.S. president Donald Trump will not come until early to-mid February, a court spokesperson said Thursday. Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the case a political vendetta by James, an elected Democrat. Engoron previously ruled in September that Trump had engaged in fraud and ordered his business empire be partially dissolved. Closing arguments were delivered in the case on Jan. 11, with Engoron saying on that day he had hoped to issue a ruling by Jan. 31. On the day of closing arguments, Trump lashed out at the judge in the courtroom, telling him, "You have your own agenda.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As he looks past the GOP primary and towards a likely general election rematch against President Joe Biden, Donald Trump will meet with members of the Teamsters Union in Washington Wednesday afternoon as he tries to cut into Biden's support. Trump is hoping to cut into that support as he casts himself as pro-worker and tries to exacerbate longstanding divisions between union leaders and rank-and-file members. While the Teamsters endorsed Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, O'Brien stressed the union has “a very diverse membership. Wheaton estimates about 30% to 40% of its members voted for Trump in 2020, even though the union endorsed Biden. Teamsters members include UPS drivers, film and television workers, freight operators, members of law enforcement and other government workers.

If former President Donald Trump and his campaign choose to attack Taylor Swift, he'll have to defeat a far scarier and more dangerous force than Joe Biden's reelection campaign: her scorned fans. A Morning Consult survey from March 2023 estimated that 53% of US adults consider themselves Swift fans, an astoundingly large support base. While the general perception is that Swift fans are overwhelmingly Democrats or left-leaning, liberals are estimated to be around 55% of her fan base, meaning there are more than 100 million Republican Swifties that the former president risks alienating. If just a small fraction of Swift's Republican fans defect over such attacks, it could legitimately help Biden secure a second term in the White House. If Trump and his circle go ahead with their "holy war" against the pop star, they should be prepared for the worst.

In delaying the approval process for CP2, the White House is directing the Energy Department to consider all greenhouse gas emissions associated with the project — not just its construction. That could include emissions associated with drilling for and transporting the fuel, a change would also affect other pending natural gas terminals. But that can only happen if President Biden is re-elected. Both Biden and Trump have loud detractors within their parties and glaring political liabilities.
