United Airlines ' plan to revamp the cabins on its older narrow-body planes is running behind schedule because of supply chain strains, the carrier told CNBC this week. The upgrades include bigger premium cabins, seat-back entertainment screens throughout the planes, Bluetooth capabilities and other amenities. The carrier expects about one in three aircraft in its narrow-body fleet, including new aircraft, will have the upgraded interior by the end of the year. The airline had targeted 2025 to complete the narrow-body upgrades, but it's unclear if United will make that goal. Delta executives have said that revenue growth for premium seats like business class or premium economy has outpaced sales from standard coach.
An ongoing pilot shortage has plagued US airlines since travel came roaring back post-pandemic. While some organizations — like the Regional Airline Association advocacy group — have praised the legalization, the Air Line Pilots Association has opposed it, Reuters reported. Increasing pilot payRegional flying has been particularly impacted by the pilot shortage, forcing airlines to slash dozens of flights to small markets and even ground regional jets. Other regional carriers like Mesa Airlines, Republic Airways, and Delta's wholly-owned airline Endeavor Air have also gotten pay increases. Lowering training requirementsRegional carrier Republic recently asked the FAA to reduce the flight hour requirement for pilots graduating from its LIFT pilot training academy.
Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta, said the airline would look at increasing its overbooking rate. Your next Delta Air Lines flight might come with a hard decision: taking the flight or a cash voucher instead. That's because the airline is considering increasing the rate it overbooks flights Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta Air Lines, told investors in an April earnings call. Hauenstein said the airline would take a measured approach, increasing overbooking little by little and seeing how it goes. Airlines must balance the risk and rewards of overbooking to maximize revenue on any given flight.
United Airlines is planning to grow its service to Australia and New Zealand later this year, the carrier's latest bet that travelers will continue to book international trips. United is also building up service from both San Francisco and Los Angeles to Brisbane, Australia, and it is using its largest plane to fly between San Francisco and Melbourne, Australia. Airline executives have been upbeat about international travel demand and have been expanding their schedules to cater to the rebound. "On international, we are excited with the momentum we're seeing and expect record revenues and profitability for the summer travel season," Delta's president, Glen Hauenstein, said Thursday on an earnings call. United Airlines is scheduled to report first-quarter results after the market closes Tuesday and will provide another demand forecast ahead of the peak summer travel season.
Travel is showing no signs of cooling off this summer, as both demand and prices are expected to stay high. "There's still a lot of pent of demand going back to the pandemic," Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel said on "Squawk on the Street" last week. He also pointed to the TSA checkpoint travel numbers, which are now within a few percentage points compared to the number of travelers seen in 2019. That demand has kept prices high, Fogel said, noting recent trips he's taken. "[Consumers] have gone three years without having the experiences they want, including last summer," Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian said on "Squawk Box" earlier this week.

Analysts polled by Refinitiv had anticipated second-quarter revenue growth of 14.7% and earnings per share of $1.66. But for the first quarter, adjusted revenue and adjusted earnings came in below analyst estimates. Adjusted revenue: $11.84 billion vs. $11.99 billion expected. In the first quarter, Delta posted a net loss of $363 million, or 57 cents per share, citing, in part, a new, four-year pilot contract that includes 34% raises. That's still improvement from the year-ago period, when travel demand was still recovering and the company reported a net loss of $940 million, or $1.48 per share.

Illustration by Gene KimAs weed becomes legal in more states, how and if travelers can bring their stash on board remains up in the air. Traveling between states where marijuana is legal in both the origin and destination may sound straight-forward, but with overlapping jurisdictions and hard-to-enforce guidelines, it gets complicated. Under federal law, the possession and sale of marijuana is illegal. Despite President Joe Biden's recent pardons for anyone convicted of a federal crime for simple possession and his directive to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law, marijuana is still classified as a Schedule I substance. And even though airports are locally owned and operated, air travel still falls under federal law.
Online searches by Americans for flights to Europe trips are surging despite soaring air fares, a worsening economic outlook and risks of gridlock at some of the airports in Europe. The travel boom is promising record profit margins at some U.S. carriers, which are ramping up transatlantic capacity to cash in on Americans' thirst for travel to Europe. Travel website Kayak said searches for travel to Europe this summer are up 77% from last year. There is still untapped travel demand for Europe even after a busy summer last year, said Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper. Average fare for a round-trip flight to Europe, meanwhile, has risen 31% from last year, Hopper data shows.

The New York Yankees are worth $6 billion, enough to make them the fourth most valuable team in the world. Despite all of that, they are one of the only teams in Major League Baseball that forces players to pay for in-flight WiFi if they want to surf the web while traveling on the team jet. Yankees players have to shell out $9 for Delta's in-flight Wi-Fi every flight if they want to get online. While some Yankees pay up, others get around the policy by getting WiFi access through their T-Mobile plans, which is a Delta partner. So I would take that over free Wi-Fi, if I'm being honest."
CHICAGO, March 13 (Reuters) - United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL.O) on Monday forecast an unexpected loss in the current quarter, citing lower demand as well as higher costs from a potential contract deal with pilots. Booming travel demand has allowed U.S. carriers including United to offset cost pressures with higher ticket prices. United said a combination of lower-demand in January and February and higher capacity has weakened its pricing power. The Chicago-based carrier now expects an adjusted loss between 60 cents and $1.00 per share for the quarter through March. United and American Airlines (AAL.O) are now under pressure not just to conclude their pilot contract negotiations, but also better Delta's deal.
Pilots talk as they look at the tail of an American Airlines aircraft. American Airlines pilots' union plans to hold a vote next month on whether to allow members to call a strike as talks for a new labor contract continue. "While our Negotiating Committee reports good progress, we remain steadfast and focused that now is the time to reach an agreement with American Airlines," the American Airlines pilots' union said Thursday. They had approved a strike authorization vote in the fall, about a month before reaching a preliminary deal with the company. Even if American pilots' union called a strike it would not be immediate; airline strikes are extremely rare in the U.S. and would follow a lengthy process involving federal mediators.
CHICAGO, March 7 (Reuters) - American Airlines (AAL.O) is prepared to match the pay rates and profit-sharing formula that rival Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) has provided in its new pilot contract, Chief Executive Robert Isom said on Tuesday. Isom told American pilots that matching Delta's deal will result in a contract worth more than $7 billion for them. Delta's pilots last week ratified a new contract that is widely expected to be a benchmark for contract negotiations at rival carriers. To match Delta's deal, Isom said American pilots would receive on average pay increases of 21% in the first year of contract. Total pay increases in the fourth year of the contract deal would be 40%, he said.
FILE - American Airlines President Robert Isom speaks at a news conference about the company's new partnership with Alaska Airlines, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, in Seattle. American Airlines CEO Doug Parker will retire next March and be replaced by the airline's current president, Robert Isom. American Airlines is prepared to raise pilots' wages to match that of Delta Air Lines ' pilots in a new contract, including 40% cumulative pay increases in a four-year deal, CEO Robert Isom said in a message to pilots. "Let me be clear, American is prepared to match Delta's pay rates and provide American's pilots with the same profit-sharing formula as Delta's pilots," Isom said in the message to pilots, sent on Tuesday and seen by CNBC. The Allied Pilots Association, American Airlines pilots' union, didn't immediately comment on Isom's statement.

MONTREAL, March 3 (Reuters) - Air Canada (AC.TO) pilots are pressing for higher pay in the run-up to fresh contract talks, following recent gains secured by pilots at U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), union representatives told Reuters. Delta's latest hourly pay rates are up to 45% higher than current Air Canada hourly pay rates, the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA) said in an email. Air Canada pilots have received a 2% wage increase per year, since 2014, said ACPA, which represents about 4,500 pilots. ACPA is in talks to possibly join the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the world's largest pilots' union, representing more than 60,000 pilots in the United States and Canada. Air Canada, which expects to return to 2019 levels of capacity next year, is also facing cost pressures.
