Google just scored a big win in the AI talent war

Some observers say it's a big win for Google to secure OpenAI's "secret weapon." Kilpatrick's move comes as Big Tech firms vie for top expertise in an AI talent war. The move shows the transfer window of AI expertise is firmly open as Big Tech companies battle it out to lure top AI talent. Google AI Studio lets developers integrate Gemini with APIs to create generative AI applications that are also known as "wrappers". Intel's senior AI developers community lead, Ryan Carson, wrote on X: "Things are movin' and shakin' in the AI industry.

The funding bonanza over AI could add lots of hype and "maybe some grifting," says Demis Hassabis. "In a way, AI's not hyped enough but in some senses it's too hyped," the Google DeepMind chief said. "In a way, AI's not hyped enough but in some senses it's too hyped," Hassabis the Financial Times in a story published Sunday. The fervor amongst investors for AI, Hassabis told the Financial Times, reminded him of "other hyped-up areas" like crypto. "Some of that has now spilled over into AI, which I think is a bit unfortunate," Hassabis told the outlet.

It comes as Apple is expected to unveil several new AI features at its developer conference in June. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is interested in licensing and building Google’s Gemini AI engine, which includes chatbots and other AI tools, into upcoming iPhones and its iOS 18 features. A partnership with Google would catapult Apple into the growing AI arms race. Apple, Google and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. Behind the scenes, Apple reportedly has been working its on-device generative AI capabilities and acquiring companies, such as Canadian startup DarwinAI.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, speaks on artificial intelligence during a Bruegel think tank conference in Brussels, Belgium, on Jan. 20, 2020. Google announced it will restrict the types of election-related queries that users can ask its Gemini chatbot, adding it has already rolled out the changes in the U.S. and in India, where voters will head to the polls this spring. "Out of an abundance of caution on such an important topic, we have begun to roll out restrictions on the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses," Google wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. "We take our responsibility for providing high-quality information for these types of queries seriously, and are continuously working to improve our protections." We know that the development process was running late and over budget, so Musk needed capital. We did not know he'd suggested that OpenAI raise $1 billion, merge with Tesla, and name him CEO. He's angry at OpenAI for giving other investors the opportunity to invest in a powerful company he wanted for himself. So now Musk is turning back to OpenAI, hoping the latest charmless offensive can help shore up his empire. If Musk indeed believed OpenAI needed him or Tesla to succeed, he was as belligerent about it as he was wrong.

By contrast, Musk appeared to discourage OpenAI co-founders from taking a too-lean approach to fundraising, according to emails the company reproduced from December 2018. The startup also said in its blog post that Musk sought to become OpenAI's CEO in 2017 as it was changing its structure. In emails from January 2018 reproduced by OpenAI, Musk agrees with an unnamed sender who encouraged the startup's co-founders to rely on Tesla as their "cash cow." The slip-up was so bad it sent the company's stock tumbling, and had CEO Sundar Pichai address the troops, calling the situation "completely unacceptable." The debacle has strengthened the narrative that Google is suddenly behind in the AI race, and now there's a growing chorus of voices calling for CEO Sundar Pichai to be replaced. Pichai, who was appointed CEO of Google in 2015, and Alphabet in 2019, has proven a strong peace-time CEO for the company. He's been an effective and steady hand who protects Google's prized search business and deals diplomatically with regulators. Responding to a tweet by Color Health CEO Othman Laraki, who said Google as facing an "unsolvable problem," Mayer defended Google somewhat.

Musk takes aim at OpenAIThe gloves have really come off in one of the most personal fights in the tech world: Elon Musk has sued OpenAI and its C.E.O., Sam Altman, accusing them of reneging on the start-up’s original purpose of being a nonprofit laboratory for the technology. Yes, Musk has disagreed with Altman for years about the purpose of the organization they co-founded and he is creating a rival artificial intelligence company. But the lawsuit also appears rooted in philosophical differences that go to the heart of who controls a hugely transformative technology — and is backed by one of the wealthiest men on the planet. The backstory: Musk, Altman and others agreed to create OpenAI in 2015 to provide an open-sourced alternative to the likes of Google, which had bought the leading A.I. start-up DeepMind the year before.

Just two months after Google launched Gemini, its flashy new AI model, the company revealed that it had already built a better version. Users have long bemoaned — and researchers recently found — a decline in the quality of Google Search results. The fact that Google is not far and away the self-driving-car leader, it's, like, a total joke," the former Google director said, adding that the problem of Google's lost supremacy is "maybe impossible to solve, frankly." Elon Musk is going to war with Google

Elon Musk has been heavily criticising Google over the past week. Since the launch of Google's Gemini image generator, he's shared and replied to more than 100 posts about the company. Sharing a screenshot of one of Krawczyk's posts, Musk wrote : "This nut is a big part of why Google's AI is so racist & sexist." To give Musk some credit, Google's AI also appeared to be hard on him personally. After taking a similar issue with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Musk founded his own AI company and released Grok, a competing chatbot.

In today's big story, we're looking at the reshuffling of top executives at two of the biggest US banks . Viswas Raghavan, JPMorgan's top dealmaker, has joined Citi as its head of banking and executive vice chair, reporting directly to CEO Jane Fraser. The move is a big deal, but even more shocking since Raghavan was just promoted to be the sole head of JPMorgan's deals business.
