The Metropolitan Police said Friday they were searching Richmond Park in southwest London, near where the delivery van Daniel Khalife used to escape Wandsworth prison was spotted on Thursday. Khalife orchestrated a bold jail break from Wandsworth prison on Wednesday morning while dressed as a chef. Richmond Park, the largest of London’s Royal Parks, is designated National Nature Reserve and stretches for 2,500 acres. The Met Police said Friday it was looking into the possibility that someone inside Wandsworth prison helped Khalife escape. By then, Khalife was gone and all that remained of his escape was the strapping officers discovered under the van.

“I think there's great concern about the state of our democracy at this time,” said Mark Updegrove, CEO of the LBJ Foundation, which supports the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. Those organizations all support presidential libraries created under the Presidential Library Act of 1955, along with the Eisenhower Foundation. The push for the joint statement was spearheaded by Daniel Kramer, executive director of the George W. Bush Institute. “America is experiencing a decline in trust, social cohesion, and personal interaction.”Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama who is now CEO of the Obama Foundation, said the former president supported the statement. “This is a moment where we could all come together and show that democracy is not about partisan politics,” she said.

Wisconsin Republicans are floating the potential impeachment of state Supreme Court judge Janet Protasiewicz. Republicans are arguing that Protasiewicz must recuse herself from redistricting cases over her comments. Earlier this year, the possibility of Protasiewicz sitting on the court and turning a conservative-leaning court into one with a liberal majority animated Republicans. Republicans now enjoy a 64-35 majority in the state Assembly and a 22-11 supermajority in the state Senate, despite Wisconsin being a perennial battleground state. REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - The recently disclosed Chinese hack of senior officials at the U.S. State and Commerce departments stemmed from the compromise of a Microsoft engineer's corporate account, Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said in a blog post on Wednesday. Microsoft said the engineer's account had been penetrated by a hacking group it dubs Storm-0558, which is alleged to have stolen hundreds of thousands of emails from top American officials including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, U.S. Microsoft said it had fixed the flaws that led to the key being accessible from the unidentified engineer's account which gave the hackers such wide latitude to steal emails. A Microsoft representative said the engineer's account had been hit using "token-stealing malware" but did not provide further detail about the incident or its timing. Beijing has previously described the allegation that it stole emails from top U.S. officials as "groundless narratives."

On Broadway, Off Broadway, in special events and out of town, living authors are collaborating with dead ones. Some otherwise viable shows, like “Annie Get Your Gun,” need surgery because their racial or gender assumptions are now unacceptable. Others, like “Show Boat,” are merely falling out of copyright, with heirs eager to find a way to remonetize their property. And some — well one — are “Here We Are,” the musical Stephen Sondheim was working on when he died in November 2021. Directed by Joe Mantello and with a book by the comic playwright David Ives, it will reflect a very unusual collaboration indeed.

Experts are zeroing in on a theory around a plane crash that Russia says killed Yevgeny Prigozhin. According to CNN, fragments of Prigozhin's plane were scattered throughout a 4-mile radius. Analyzing the wreckage"It is very difficult to understand what happened without a proper investigation," Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, an aviation expert at the University of North Dakota, told CNN. So far, flight data from Flightradar24 also paints a patchy picture, showing Prigozhin's plane steeply dropping 8,000 feet in the last 30 seconds of the flight. Robert Schmucker, a rocket expert who works with NATO, also told CNN that the manner in which the plane plummeted down from the sky was highly suspicious.

Nvidia shares, which had run up in the days leading up to its report, climbed more than 6% on Thursday but pared gains to end the day little changed. However, Nvidia's stock buyback - the fifth-biggest repurchase announcement among U.S.-based companies this year, according to EPFR - surprised some investors. Despite the staggering dollar amount, Nvidia's buyback amounted to only 2.1% of its nearly $1.2 trillion market value, or buyback yield, as of Wednesday. Indeed, some investors welcomed Nvidia's buyback decision. Edward Marrinan, macro credit strategy desk analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities America, added: "Credit risk at this point is mispriced." The move prompted a sell-off in equities and slight widening in corporate credit spreads. The average investment-grade bond spreads as of on Thursday were just a few basis points wider than the tightest levels touched this year in July and 16 basis points tighter from January. Junk-bond spreads are 98 basis points inside January levels. "With market consensus now expecting a soft landing, the credit markets are arguably underpricing default risk," BMO’s Krieter said.

Swallowed by a Whale, and Other August Books
  + stars: | 2023-08-11 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If you remember your grade school English lessons, then you know that “man vs. nature” is one of the standby plotlines for storytellers, from “To Build a Fire” to “The Martian.” For readers, the appeal of such stories often lies in the “nature” side of that equation: The more daunting the conditions, the more fun it is to read about the hero’s attempt to survive them. Cue “Whalefall,” Daniel Kraus’s gripping new thriller, in which a teenage scuba diver is inadvertently swallowed alive by a 60-ton sperm whale. Sarah Lyall reviewed the book on our cover recently, and on this week’s podcast she discusses its somewhat disgusting charms with the host Gilbert Cruz. “There’s a lot of viscera and gore and gunk and gelatinous things in this book,” Lyall says. “He’s in a gelatinous sea of crud, and the question is, Can he get out?”Also in this episode, Joumana Khatib takes a look at some of the other August books we’re most excited about.

In the case being decided on Friday, Mr. Navalny, 47, is charged with promoting terrorism, funding extremism and rehabilitating Nazism. Mr. Navalny and Western rights groups have denounced the charges against him as an attempt to silence dissent against President Vladimir V. Putin. At least 15 activists who worked with Mr. Navalny face similar charges, according to his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh. Mr. Navalny told a court in late July that he expected to be convicted as well. “Everyone in Russia knows that someone who seeks justice in court is completely defenseless,” Mr. Navalny told the court, according to his team.

The logo of Atos is seen on a company building in Nantes, France, March 11, 2022. REUTERS/Stephane Mahe/File PhotoPARIS, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Talks to sell parts of French company Atos (ATOS.PA) to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky are raising concerns among some French lawmakers, who say the deal risks undermining the independence of France's nuclear deterrence. Lawmakers cannot block a sale of a French company, only the government can if it considers there is a strategic reason for doing so. The lawmakers questioned why an alternative French buyer, a consortium of French companies Astek and ChapsVision, who were reported in French media to have been interested, were not given more consideration. A source close to Astek said Atos's cybersecurity business also hosted other sensitive assets crucial to French intelligence interests.
