Caleb Hanna, a Republican in West Virginia’s House of Delegates, also said his clothes could set him apart from colleagues. On Fridays, he said, there is a tradition among some Republican members of the State House of Delegates to wear camel suit jackets, a decades-old ritual in which he has not participated. “I think that politics today is a lot different from politics of the past,” Delegate Hanna, 23, said. He started wearing the beret while organizing Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, he said. Later, when he announced his campaign for City Council, it became a way for people to recognize him.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The prospect of an auto workers strike could test Joe Biden 's treasured assertion that he's the most pro-union president in U.S. history. Political Cartoons View All 1154 Images“I think the American public as a whole realizes the impact that the American auto workers have on the economy," Killian said. But, unlike with rail and airline workers, the president doesn’t have the authority to order autoworkers to stay on the job. Nowhere will the political fallout of an auto workers strike be felt more than Michigan, which Biden won by nearly 3 percentage points in 2020. Y Combinator's Demo Day, which will wrap up today, was long considered the event for early-stage startups. And companies that get investments before Demo Day might regret it in the long run. An employee recorded Caroline Ellison blaming him for using customer funds, per a new filing. Federal prosecutors said that Caroline Ellison, a top affiliate and ex of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, blamed the embattled cryptocurrency mogul for using FTX customer deposits in a recording from a company meeting. Ellison told Alameda employees about the impending bankruptcy in the recording, prosecutors claimed. Federal prosecutors said that one employee pushed back, asking who decided to use FTX customer deposits. The memo tracks bad press around Alameda and FTX, but also shows Ellison's reflections on the alleged scheme between FTX and Alameda, prosecutors said.

A ‘Perfect Marriage’ Between Team and Player

The harmonic convergence between the resurrected Jason Heyward and the rampaging Los Angeles Dodgers crystallized beautifully one evening in Baltimore last month. It was in the top of the second inning at Camden Yards when Heyward smashed a three-run home run off the right-hander Tyler Wells, opening the gates to a five-run inning. And the Dodgers, being the Dodgers, adjusted accordingly. “I told him the situation, that my bet was that they were going to use a lefty the rest of the way,” said Manager Dave Roberts. “I told him, ‘You did your job to help us win this game.’ And he was like, ‘Doc, I’m in.’”

Why tiny homes could be a big deal
  + stars: | 2023-08-06 | by ( Matt Turner | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +6 min
It's easy to look at these tiny homes as undersized gimmicks, but there are real use cases. Others are leaning on tiny homes to house homeless veterans. Denver changed its zoning laws to make ADU construction easier, allowing two-story units in some parts of the city. Tiny homes won't fix that, but innovation in zoning and construction, taken with recent data pointing to a surge in residential construction, offer reasons for hope. Why tiny homes could be a big dealThis first appeared in the Insider Today newsletter.

The brand-extension musical is a tough genre to game, demanding something new for newcomers yet fidelity for fans. “Back to the Future: The Musical,” based on the first of the time-travel films in the billion-dollar franchise, faces an additional hurdle: It hinges on a star performance that would seem to be irreproducible onstage. And by star, I of course mean the car. Alas, that also describes the rest of the show, directed by John Rando with Doc-like frenzy: mechanical, busy, distracting, foggy. Though large, it’s less a full-scale new work than a semi-operable souvenir.

After going through a breakup last year, Connie Li, a software engineer, rejoined the dating apps, ready to dip her toe in the water again. But many of the men who reached out to her seemed to just want something casual, so she tried something new. Inspired by long, résumé-like dating bios that she had seen others post online, she drafted her own profile. In a Google Docs file longer than this article, Ms. Li, 33, described herself as monogamous, short and prone to wearing colorful outfits. “There is something kinda dorky about ‘date-me docs’ that reminds me of the early days of the internet,” Ms. Li said, referring to the way people used to meet on AIM, AOL’s now-defunct instant messaging service.

Hollywood actors have now been on strike for nearly three weeks. They have walked picket lines in broiling heat, orchestrated noisy rallies and flooded social media with cris de coeur. The president of the actors’ union, Fran Drescher, on Tuesday spoke about “greed-driven” studios at a New York City Council meeting. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a charity that provides financial assistance to workaday performers, said on Wednesday that Ms. Streep and Mr. Clooney had helped lead a donation campaign that had raised more than $15 million over the last three weeks. The pair each gave $1 million and then started to lobby Hollywood’s other top-earning stars for contributions.

Prosecutors want to send Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over alleged witness tampering. Prosecutors asked a federal judge Wednesday to send Sam Bankman-Fried to jail after he leaked his ex-girlfriend's private Google Docs to the New York Times. Bankman-Fried's lawyers said his interaction with the journalist was just addressing his overwhelmingly negative press, but prosecutors say it was much more than that. Bankman-Fried sent more than 100 emails to journalists and made 1,000 calls to journalists, prosecutors say. He called the New York Times journalist who wrote the story based on the leak 100 times, they said.

P&G Studios head Kimberly Doebereiner argues that great entertainment can come from brands. Procter & Gamble is at the forefront of the growing brand film space — with its own in-house shingle, P&G Studios, actively pursuing entertainment projects that look nothing like ads. "The first thing I'd love is for the distributors to see that great content can come from anybody, and even if it's from a brand, that doesn't mean it's brand content," she told Insider in an interview. "We have great marketing, we have great brands, we can help bring in viewers, right? "We'd love to have our content be able to show up in the retailer with our brands and create better awareness for that content," Doebereiner said.

“By the way,” Tomljanovic says at one point, “do we have a room?” Shortly after his daughter sealed her spot in the final eight of the world’s pre-eminent tennis tournament, Ratko was seen on booking.com, extending their stay in London. This is not the stuff of your typical sports documentary, but it is the life of a professional tennis player. “Break Point,” executive-produced by Paul Martin and the Oscar-winning filmmaker James Gay-Rees, arrived this year as a gift to tennis fans, for whom splashy, well-produced and readily accessible documentaries about the sport have been hard to come by. Perhaps this is because the narrative tropes of the genre tend toward triumphs and Gatorade showers, while the procedural and psychological realities of professional tennis lie elsewhere. The 10 episodes of “Break Point” render tennis unromantically: This is the rare sports doc whose primary subject is loss.
