So, while the movies share nothing other than a release date, their box office performances have been intertwined. Because of the "Barbenheimer" effect, many moviegoers who had only planned to see one of the two films ended up watching both. When forecasting for the two movies first started, experts predicted that "Barbie" would have an opening weekend in the $50 million to $60 million range, while "Oppenheimer" looked poised to sell between $30 million and $40 million worth of tickets. "Barbie's" $162 million share of that figure set the record for biggest opening weekend ever for a female director. Here's how the "Barbenheimer" $246.2 million opening weekend stacks up among the biggest movie openings of all time, according to Comscore data.

The scene features the protagonist reciting a verse from the Bhagwad Gita, considered the holiest of Hindu scripture, just before sexual intercourse. "This should be investigated... on an urgent basis and those involved should be severely punished," the nationalist "Save Culture Save India Foundation" said in a press release. Universal Pictures India, the local unit of the film's producers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Officials from the film certification board did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Pugh stops during intercourse and picks up a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism’s holiest scriptures, and asks Murphy to read from it. India’s film board gave “Oppenheimer” a U/A rating, which is reserved for movies that contain moderate adult themes and can be watched by children under 12 with parental guidance. In 2020, Netflix (NFLX) received significant backlash in India for a scene in the series “A Suitable Boy” that depicted a Hindu woman and Muslim man kissing at a Hindu temple. Ahead of the release of “Oppenheimer,” Murphy said he read the Bhagvad Gita in preparation. “I thought it was an absolutely beautiful text, very inspiring,” he told Indian film critic Sucharita Tyagi in an interview.

On Douban, a popular Chinese movie review site, the movie is currently scored 8.6 out of 10, with nearly half of all viewers giving it full marks. Another top comment compared “Barbie” to another recent Chinese release, “Lost in the Stars,” which had previously received criticism for its portrayal of gender stereotypes. “There isn’t any new thinking about feminism, the movie is just an expression of old thoughts,” one person wrote on Douban. By Monday, cinemas had increased the number of screenings allocated to “Barbie” to make up 8.7% of all movie screenings, according to Maoyan. The film’s success is all the more notable given mounting challenges for US films to break into the Chinese movie market – the world’s second biggest, briefly holding the top spot during the Covid pandemic.

"Barbenheimer" exploded over the weekend, generating an estimated $235.5 million in ticket sales and reinvigorating the domestic box office. "It was a truly historic weekend and continues the positive box office momentum of 2023," said Michael O'Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. Some box office analysts project that Monday's official weekend numbers could be quite a bit higher than Sunday's estimates, and push "Barbenheimer" weekend up the charts. The success of "Barbenheimer" comes at a time when the domestic box office has faced some hurdles. They've reignited the summer box office flame, and they've proven that studios can be a little more aggressive with counter-programming strategies in the future."

MUMBAI, July 21 (Reuters) - India's biggest cinema operator PVR Inox (PVRL.NS) is banking on Hollywood's "Oppenheimer", "Barbie" and unlimited popcorn to pack theatres after a string of Bollywood flops kept away those patrons who still favour going to the movies over streaming services. For the opening weekend, some theatres will also run an "Oppenheimer" movie marathon, with back-to-back shows over a 24 hour period. With 1,702 screens, PVR Inox is India's largest cinema operator. A PVR Inox staff member in Mumbai said several "Oppenheimer" shows - including the midnight and 7 a.m. screenings on Friday - were fully booked. India's online movie ticket booking service BookMyShow said this week 8% those who bought "Oppenheimer" tickets also booked to watch "Barbie", many on the same day.

AMC Theatres isn't going ahead with its plan to charge more for the best seats at the movie theater. After trials at select locations, the chain scrapped the plan to ensure "its ticket prices stay competitive." AMC's unpopular tiered-pricing plan would have raised costs for middle seats and charged less for seats in the front row. The US box office dropped from $11.3 billion in 2019 to just $7.3 billion in 2022, according to Box Office Mojo. The domestic box office has grossed just over $5 billion in 2023 to date, per Box Office Mojo.

The “Barbenheimer” craze, which has swelled in popularity over the last few weeks, is all but set to propel the box office to its best weekend in years. BoxOffice Pro, a publication that tracks box office performance, said this week it is projecting a $200+ million weekend at the cinema. The battle of the bombshells playing out in theaters is not the usual runaway box office success story. “But it’s not just about the first three days of the box office either. The irony in the films’ massive draw is that, typically, studios prefer to avoid releasing major box office features on the same weekend as another.

A quick question about the Trinity test, when Oppenheimer, Groves and the physicists and engineers set off the first nuclear bomb. Some of the things they came up with were extremely small and microscopic that play as bigger. As I do interviews and the film’s coming out, I’m always asked, do you know what you’re doing next? For me, I do one thing at a time and I put everything into it obsessively, and the film is not finished. It’d be much more sensible to work on three things at once and have the next thing all lined up.

This weekend at the box office is all about atomic bombs and blonde bombshells. Typically when two big movies from two different studios hit theaters at the same time, it's a competition for ticket sales. Heading into the weekend, "Barbie" is expected to capture at least $90 million in domestic ticket sales, with some box office analysts projecting the film could tally upwards of $140 million. Major movie chains have indicated that ticket sales are strong for both films this weekend and additional shows have been added to accommodate demand. "Going into this weekend anticipation has been very high for both 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer,'" said Jeffrey Kaufman, chief content officer at Malco Theatres.

Aqua's chart-topping 1997 hit "Barbie Girl" called the doll a "blond bimbo" and was full of innuendos. "Barbie Girl" is now being revived in Greta Gerwig's film with a performance by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. But no one really thought that the tongue-in-cheek song could have been written by Mattel, Lobel wrote. Years later, Mattel even bought the rights to the song from Aqua, Lobel wrote. The song is now making a comeback, in a way, thanks to Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" film, which is hitting cinemas this Friday.

It would have seemed inconceivable then, but the atomic bomb did fade out of mind. And it’s precisely at this moment that Christopher Nolan is asking audiences to look it soberly in the eye. As the name suggests, Nolan has taken on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific genius and conflicted godfather of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy as godfather of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer in "Oppenheimer." But even if a war involving a nuclear power hadn’t erupted in Europe in 2022, Nolan believes “Oppenheimer” contains crossover anxieties.

Insider spoke to three Barbie collectors who seem unfazed by the potential rise in the dolls' worth. As a collector doing it for love, he told Insider those looking to make money should invest in other things. Antique expert Dr. Lori told Insider she estimates a 25% rise in the doll's value in the build-up to the film's release and immediately afterward. "There are too many elements to the concept of value, and it's rarely just about finance," Yang told Insider. Even if these Barbie collectors were looking to make a quick buck in Gerwig's box office weekend, selling Barbies isn't easy.

The proposal was delivered to the streaming platforms at a June 20 meeting at the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The government highlighted the need for a "more proactive approach" to ensure that streaming content, "including international content", aligns with a so-called code of ethics, the minutes showed. That code already mandates providers to exercise caution on content that could incite violence or be sensitive for religious reasons. The proposal also comes as streaming giants protest a government order to add 50-second tobacco health warnings in each piece of content, and two years after India ordered the setting up self-regulatory bodies for complaints about streaming content. Suhasini Maniratnam of the Digital Publisher Content Grievance Council, told the gathering pre-censorship could hurt the industry growth and cost jobs, and that given the high volume of content "there is a need to specifically act" against obscene and vulgar content.

They could also be the struggling theater industry's last chance to make money this summer. Struggling movie theaters might see "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" – which both come out July 21 – as their last chance to make money this summer. Forecasters think "Barbie" will be the highest-grossing film in the US this summer with earnings between $215 million and $319 million, the data shows. Sandwiching the two movies on Box Office Pro's leaderboard is Tom Cruise's latest "Mission Impossible" flick.
