A 19-year-old New York City school worker is in critical condition after he was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon while leaving the elementary school he was working at. As of early Wednesday morning, the NYPD said the victim remained in critical condition. The victim's union told NBC New York that he worked as a school paraprofessional for the Department of Education. He also said he would be working with the NYPD to increase security around the school. "This is a tragedy," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet, responding to the deadly incident.

A leak has been detected in another pipeline that carries energy supplies from Russia to Europe — but the Polish government has said the damage was likely accidental. The leak was detected Tuesday night in one line of the Druzhba oil pipeline just over 40 miles from the Polish city of Plock, its operator PERN said Wednesday. The pipeline operator said the portion of pipe affected was the main route through which crude oil reaches Germany. “Here we can talk about accidental damage,” Poland’s top official in charge of energy infrastructure, Mateusz Berger, told Reuters by phone. Las Vegas police have apprehended a man who escaped prison earlier this week while serving a life sentence for a deadly 2007 explosion outside a Las Vegas Strip resort. Duarte-Herrera escaped from the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs and was discovered missing during the 7 a.m. count Tuesday, according to the Nevada Corrections Department. They had warned anyone who spotted him not to approach the escaped inmate and to call 911 immediately. He said he had ordered the Corrections Department to launch a thorough investigation into what happened. Rueda-Denvers, 47, remains behind bars at a separate state prison, according to Corrections Department records.

A high school football player in New Jersey has died nearly two weeks after he was seriously injured during a football game earlier this month, officials said. Xavier McClain, 16, succumbed to injuries sustained during a Sept. 9 game between his school, Linden High School and the nearby Woodbridge High School, Derek Armstead, the mayor of Linden, a city just 13 miles southwest of Manhattan, said Wednesday. Law enforcement were waiting for American Airlines flight 377 when it landed in L.A. “due to an unruly passenger who physically assaulted a flight attendant,” the airline said in a statement. It said the aircraft was able to land safely and taxied to the gate, where law enforcement removed the passenger. The FBI confirmed that an individual had been detained on a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles on suspicion of interfering with a flight crew, a federal offense. American Airlines said it would be working closely with law enforcement in an investigation into the incident.

A military contractor known as “Fat Leonard," who cut off his ankle bracelet and fled after pleading guilty in a major U.S. Navy corruption scandal, was apprehended in Venezuela, authorities said Wednesday. Leonard Glenn Francis, who was on house arrest in San Diego and weeks away from sentencing, removed his GPS tracker Sept. 4, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Members of the San Diego Fugitive Task Force went to Francis’ residence and, after announcing themselves, went into his home through an unlocked door, the Marshals Service said.
