HOUSTON, March 8 (Reuters) - Billions of dollars in clean energy incentives are poised to speed investment on American soil while putting the European Union's energy transition at risk by luring away money and talent, executives at the CERAWeek energy conference said this week. European energy companies echoed the call for Europe to come up with its own new incentives. Patrick Pouyanne, CEO of French energy giant TotalEnergies told the conference the IRA was an "invitation to accelerate green infrastructure." In Europe, you begin to regulate," he said, adding that Europe and the United States should consider forming a free trade agreement on renewable energy infrastructure. Ken Gilmartin, CEO of British engineering firm Wood Plc, said the IRA would put the United States in first place in the decarbonization race.
Jamie Fiore Higgins interviewed on TV on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. And so in the book "Bully Market: My Story of Money and Misogyny at Goldman Sachs," published last summer, she chronicled them. A Goldman Sachs spokesperson said the company "strongly disagrees" with the characterization of its culture described in the book, and what it called "anonymized allegations." "For those 18 years, I cared more about Goldman Sachs than I did my husband, my kids, my parents," she told CNBC. Fiore Higgins' account represents one person's experiences over a set period of time.
As Taipei and Beijing gradually resume travel links halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan security officials expect China to relaunch an influence campaign that in the past included all-expenses-paid trips to China for Taiwan politicians. China refuses to talk to the government, believing Tsai is a separatist for refusing to accept Beijing's long-standing position that China and Taiwan both belong to "one China". "They might want Taiwanese to support certain political parties who support closer economic ties with the mainland," a Taiwan security official investigating the matter told Reuters. Also last month, a group of Chinese officials made their first visit to Taiwan in three years to attend a cultural event in the capital, Taipei. A second senior Taiwan security official said the island should be "on high alert" for efforts by China to press its message on reunification.
Before Sudani formed his government he struck a deal with the KDP, which dominates the administration in Erbil, capital of the semi-autonomous region in northern Iraq. Under the Iraqi constitution, the Kurdish region is entitled to a portion of the national budget. A spokesman for the KRG, Jotiar Adil, said the "politically motivated" court was trying to spoil the deal between Erbil and Baghdad. A source with knowledge of the meetings said Erbil and Baghdad remained far apart on the hydrocarbon law. CNN —In a first-of-its-kind proposal in the United States, some Maryland lawmakers want to subsidize employers that choose to experiment with a 4-day workweek. While many 4-day workweek experiments have been conducted recently in the US and Europe, no US state has offered to subsidize the cost of the experiment for its employers, Stewart added. Employers that participate would have flexibility over how they allow workers to organize their shorter workweek, Stewart said. “It may be more advantageous to have different approaches.”The experiment should include both blue-collar and white-collar employers, Stewart added. So if there is huge interest by employers, Maryland’s Department of Labor will have to select which ones may participate.
UPS plants fake packages to make sure drivers and staff are following the rules. Current workers and former managers told Insider the practice is known as "SALTing" inside UPS. Two UPS drivers said they've seen an uptick since the end of the holiday season. Glenn Gooding, a manager for most of his 20+ years at UPS, told Insider he probably "SALTed" at least 10,000 times. Other drivers said the most common use was planting fake packages in order to make sure packages that don't scan are returned to the delivery station.
Making smoothies with fruit alone is a mistake that causes blood sugar spikes, a dietitian said. It's important to add healthy fats, protein, and fiber, Nichola Ludlam-Raine told Insider. She shared five recipes for nutritionally balanced smoothies, from carrot cake to apple pie flavors. "The main mistake people make when making smoothies is making them with 100% fruit," registered dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine told Insider. Investing in Space: Doing well to do good

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. I met up with Planet CFO Ashley Fieglein Johnson here in NYC earlier this month, and one thing she said has really stuck with me: "We have to do well in order to do good." And it's true: Space technologies have changed life around the world in a variety of ways, from GPS to communications and more. "The carrot of being able to do good doesn't tend to survive the nuclear winter of a tough economy," Fieglein Johnson said. Planet's stock slid last year alongside other recently debuted pure-play space companies, but Fieglein Johnson sees the company at a "tipping point" because "awareness of Planet is just at a fundamentally new level."
Amazon creates bazaar for U.S. banking wannabes

The e-commerce goliath recently added to its growing pile of debt with an $8 billion loan. After first tapping the market’s biggest bookrunners, Amazon enlisted Canada’s TD Securities to shop the lesser-traveled byways around Wall Street for the follow-up deal. It’s easy to understand why the wannabes would jump at the chance to work with Amazon. Others such as BBVA, which offloaded its American subsidiary but kept its broker-dealer business, are keen to expand in U.S. investment banking. For Amazon, spreading the wealth is a chance to trial new banking relationships before potentially hiring them for more complicated matters.

Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk The Digital Workplace Is Designed to Bring You DownWe’ve been given no shortage of digital tools that should, in theory, help us work better, with more focus and efficiency, and connect us more easily with our colleagues. Your brain can’t have your inbox open next to the memo you’re writing while you’re also on the phone. The only way to get out of that suboptimal equilibrium is to completely change the way the organization collaborates. You can’t have a small number of executives figure out the right way to do the work and then dispense it. But zoom out to John McPhee’s career, and you’re like, you’re one of the most productive and impactful writers of all time.
But at a Friday meeting the commanders of the armed forces, Lula did not bring up the attack, according to a government official who witnessed the meeting. The armed forces' strategic plans to modernize its equipment included developing a nuclear-powered submarine contracted with France's Naval Group, a subsidiary of defense contractor Thales (TCFP.PA). GENIE OUT OF THE BOTTLEWhether a splurge on military hardware will help tamp down pro-Bolsonaro sentiment in the armed forces is open to question. "Lula wants this to go away as soon as possible," he added. "Starting to punish members of the armed forces for what happened may be legally the right thing to do but politically it would open a Pandora's box."

It took less than a year to draw 180 million barrels of oil out of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. After President Biden authorized a historic emergency release last year, there were roughly 372.4 million barrels left in the SPR as of Dec. 30, the lowest level in 39 years. It is taking baby steps, starting with a 3-million-barrel pilot program under which it would offer market participants a fixed price for future delivery. This is a new approach for the DOE, which has typically purchased for more immediate delivery. The idea is to use the fixed-price contracts as a carrot for U.S. oil producers to invest in production.
The most recent is to a fertility benefit, coverage of which is now reduced by 50%. Musk has used fertility treatments to conceive most of his children. Elon Musk continues to cut costs at Twitter, with the latest move drastically reducing a benefit that helped employees with the cost of fertility treatments and adoption. The benefit is provided through a third party, Carrot, which last week emailed Twitter employees telling them of the change in coverage. Two former employees noted that the change will likely become part of the five lawsuits and group arbitrations that have been filed over Musk's treatment of Twitter employees.

After being laid off, fired or resigning, some former Twitter employees now fear they will never be reimbursed by Elon Musk for once-covered work expenses. In recent weeks, a number of former Twitter employees have received boilerplate rejection emails for expenses, three people familiar with the company told Insider. Former employees with rejected expenses are being told by email the expenses fall outside of a new policy enacted about three weeks ago by Twitter HR under Musk, as Insider reported. Other former employees are having trouble being reimbursed for expenses related to costs of fertility treatments and adoption. Twitter did not mention Carrot or fertility benefits explicitly in the November email regarding the new expense policy.
Several law firms adopted the Mansfield rule in 2017, which aims to increase diversity in leadership. It's effectively the NFL's two-decade-old Rooney rule: a requirement that nonwhite candidates be considered when teams hire for coaching and front-office jobs. Law firms followed professional football in 2017 with its version of the Rooney rule, called the Mansfield rule. At first, the Rooney rule seemed to catch on when teams started to hire more coaches of color and a dozen general managers of color when that position was added to the Rooney rule. "For the Rooney rule to work," he said, "there has to be a true commitment from the owners.
Banks and other corporations that proactively report possible employee crimes to the government instead of waiting to be discovered will get more lenient terms, according to a Justice Department official. "When misconduct occurs, we want companies to step up," Miller told the bank attorneys and compliance managers in attendance. "When companies do, they can expect to fare better in a clear and predictable way." The carrot that Justice officials are dangling before the corporate world includes a promise that companies that promptly self-report misconduct won't be forced to enter a guilty plea, "absent aggravating factors," Miller said. They will also avoid being assigned in-house watchdogs called monitors if they fully cooperate and bootstrap internal compliance programs, he said.
Saudi leaders will infuse the trip with a dose of spectacle. The Saudi king – or his powerful Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman – may bestow the Chinese leader with some honors and medals. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman fist bumps US President Joe Biden upon his arrival at Al Salman Palace, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 15. Today, the US consumes only a fraction of that Saudi oil, and China is Saudi Arabia’s biggest client and trading partner. Over the last year, Gulf Arab countries appear to have ramped up their independent-minded policy.

Having taken a 78-run lead in the runfest, England declared their second innings on 264-7 to set Pakistan an improbable victory target of 343 with four sessions to go. Opener Imam-ul-Haq (43) and debutant Saud Shakeel (24) were resisting England's victory march when bad light stopped play. Agha Salman's breezy 53 frustrated England who had to toil for about 75 minutes to claim the last three Pakistan wickets. England were rattled early in their second innings with Naseem Shah in the thick of things. Naseem dismissed Ben Duckett, one of four century-makers in England's first innings, for a first-ball duck with the second delivery of the innings.
