The other was the riskiest of risk assets, whose moves mirrored those of tech stocks. It won't happen overnight, but investors more than ever want to see a crypto market driven by utility rather than speculation . Barclays analyst Benjamin Budish said his team believes "crypto assets are likely to continue to behave like high-beta risk assets going forward." Investing in the next two quarters Bitcoin has fallen more than 60% this year and sits roughly 75% off of its all-time high from November 2021. When there's a pullback in that growth, as there was this year, bitcoin tends to struggle, Alden explained.

The events of the year took many investors by surprise and made the task of predicting bitcoin's price that much harder. The crypto market was awash with pundits making feverish calls about where bitcoin was heading next. When asked about his $250,000 target earlier this month, the Draper Associates founder told CNBC $250,000 "is still my number" — but he's extending his prediction by six months. The entrepreneur says he's also done making bitcoin price predictions. Buehler said lack of risk management in the crypto industry, missing regulation and fraud have also been major factors affecting prices.

  + stars: | 2022-12-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Core Scientific said in a statement the bankruptcy filing was necessitated by a decline in the company's operating performance and liquidity amid the prolonged decrease in the price of bitcoin. Core Scientific said its creditors have also agreed to provide up to $56 million in debtor-in-possession financing. One of the largest creditors of Core Scientific, B. Riley Financial Inc (RILY.O), had offered $72 million last week to avoid the bitcoin miner's bankruptcy. In its bankruptcy petition, Core Scientific said it has $1 billion to $10 billion in assets and liabilities, and creditors between 1,000 and 5,000. Core Scientific went public in 2021 through a merger with a blank-check company in a deal that at the time valued the miner at $4.3 billion.
FTX's bankruptcy filing shows that crypto is a threat to the global financial system, according to Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das. "Mark my words, the next financial crisis will come from private cryptocurrencies," he added. Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das said Wednesday that digital assets lack any underlying value – and so they should be banned outright rather than regulated by governments. "They have no underlying value. Das's comments come as India assumes its presidency of the G20 – a group of countries including China, Russia, and the US.
This year, 174 US companies have achieved unicorn status. While it's down from a record 2021, this year is set to be one of the biggest ever for new unicorns. With markets plunging, it's unclear whether these companies can hold on to sky-high valuations. Despite market turmoil and falling valuations, 174 US companies have attained the coveted unicorn status this year, meaning they raised money at a valuation of at least $1 billion. Even Binance.US, which achieved a $4.7 billion valuation in March, may soon face its own crypto reckoning as questions swirl about the health of its parent company.
It aims to reduce the risks for consumers buying crypto, making exchanges liable if they lose investors' assets. The saga has set back adoption of crypto assets by "one or two years," according to Evgeny Gaevoy, founder and CEO of crypto market maker Wintermute. ConsolidationMany new companies and projects emerged in the years that followed the 2018 crypto winter — FTX among them. Marieke Flament, Near's CEO, said the firm had limited exposure to FTX — though the collapse was still "a surprise and a shock." Fears have risen over the financial health of other major crypto exchanges after FTX's failure.

Los Angeles CNN —Donald Trump’s entrance into the NFT world came at the worst possible moment. It bears noting, however, that despite the bad timing Trump’s NFT collection has shot to the top of NFT marketplace OpenSea’s ranking and has raked in more than $1.4 million since its launch. On the Trump Digital Trading Cards website, the Trump collection claims to be “sold out” and the floor price for a single card has risen to $177.99, according to analytics site CoinGecko. SPACs boomed in 2020 with celebrities and investors piling in, but rising interest rates and a troubled stock market has led to a dramatic fall in SPAC value. FRANKFURT, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Germany's top regulator this week called for global regulation of the cryptocurrency industry to protect consumers, prevent money laundering and preserve financial stability. Branson said a "crypto spring" may follow what has been a "crypto winter" but that the industry that emerges is likely to have more links with traditional finance, further increasing the need for regulation. "Now is the time for serious cryptocurrency regulation," he said. Regulation of the industry has been loose and patchwork. Last month he said in an interview on the ECB's website that "not all crypto business models are serious".
