Why you should be traveling to Europe in fall, not summer
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( Terry Ward | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
And now it’s fall, when the continent really comes into its own as the leaves – and visitor numbers – start to drop. A recent report from luxury travel network Virtuoso named Paris, London and Florence as the most booked cities for fall travel. “Fall is one of the best times to visit Europe because of the vast variety of interests [the season] can cater to,” says Mina Agnos, president of luxury travel company Travelive. If you’re ready for a different take on Europe this fall, we’ve got ideas. Fall also means it’s harvest time in Rebland – an area southwest of Baden-Baden famous for its Riesling.

As for today's edition, we're looking at how AI could upend the job of the junior banker, and the effect that'll have on Wall Street's traditional career path. AdvertisementAdvertisementAspiring financiers need to look no further than investment banks' analyst programs to get a foot in the door. But this crucial piece of Wall Street's ecosystem could be upended by the rise of artificial intelligence. AdvertisementAdvertisementBuy-side firms have largely held off on going after college graduates, instead pointing them toward banks' analyst programs. Regardless of what direction things go, what's clear is the type of work AI excels at falls directly in junior bankers' wheelhouse.

VIEW UAW expands strikes against GM, Stellantis

The escalation comes as the labor group and the automakers remain apart on terms of a new contract covering 146,000 workers. DANIEL IVES, ANALYST AT WEDBUSH SECURITIES:"This becomes a full on tidal wave of strikes for GM and Stellantis. "This is like union 101 in terms of divide and conquer and put more pressure on GM and Stellantis. "I think GM and Stellantis are going to fight this. But I am less confident Stellantis can work it out because they are by far the worst of the three with labor relations."

REUTERS/Michael Swensen Acquire Licensing RightsCHICAGO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers (UAW) members rallied against the Detroit Three automakers in multiple U.S. states on Thursday afternoon as Friday's deadline loomed for a threatened expansion of the union's strikes. The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). UAW workers want to end a tiered wage structure that they say has created a large gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet. On Thursday morning, Fain posted a video message on X, formerly known as Twitter, to UAW members about the Friday deadline, showing scenes from several Hollywood movies with the characters saying "tick tock." Fain has said Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors.

REUTERS/Bianca Flowers Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - Jeffrey Aznavorian has already cut output about 6% at his small auto parts factory outside Detroit due to the United Auto Workers strike. If the strike expands, it would only be a matter of weeks before some smaller suppliers faltered, said Marick Masters, a professor of business at Wayne State University. He estimates 30% of smaller suppliers carry too much debt to survive a long strike. Other measures also point to a supply base that was strained even before the strike. But let's face it, many of the tasks junior bankers spend their time on could very well be done by a robot. "As a junior banker you don't critically think. With artificial intelligence progressing by leaps and bounds, how will it impact the job of the junior banker? She said it's already helping junior bankers get their jobs done faster. "It will allow junior bankers to operate at a higher level with that first pass of analysis being prepared by the technology," said Torrente.

Last Saturday’s final between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka exemplified some of the very best and very worst of the tournament. Their contrast of styles was on display for all to see: Sabalenka’s power and single-mindedness against Gauff’s ability to endure and problem-solve. Gauff’s win, however, was immediately understood as symbolizing American core values such as determination, grit and self-belief. This reflexive American triumphalism turns any final into little more than a prologue, with more and better promised in the future. It just sells the product; a grasping for greatness in the moment instead of simply letting the moment be.

And now, Shawn Fain is representing nearly 150,000 auto workers in one of the biggest labor strikes in decades. Referring to Biblical scripture, Fain asked union members: "Are you willing to have faith and move that mountain? The Wednesday before contract expiration, he said UAW members must fight for a better contract "by any means necessary" - one of Malcolm X's most quoted phrases. That six-week strike cost GM $3.6 billion and stressed the finances of UAW members. This is because blast furnaces operate around the clock and need more workers. Goncalves is also betting that producing iron ore in-house for blast furnaces, rather than sourcing scrap steel for electric arc furnaces, will give Cliffs a competitive edge. While a few carmakers use aluminum for automotive bodies, most prefer high-grade steel from blast furnaces. Cliffs' devotion to blast furnaces, which are unionized unlike some electric arc furnaces, won it the support of United Steelworkers. The union's international president Thomas Conway said it's backing Cliffs' bid for U.S. Steel because of Goncalves' commitment to blast furnaces.
