Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese said he would cut student debt by 20% next year. AdvertisementThe Australian government on Sunday announced a sweeping plan to forgive 20% of student debt for around 3 million Australians. The debt relief is designed to promote "intergenerational equity," Albanese told Australian Broadcasting Radio on Monday, according to Bloomberg. AdvertisementHowever, Biden's efforts to grant broad student loan relief have hit several stumbling blocks. Biden's Education Department is continuing to work on debt relief proposals; if finalized, the latest one would benefit 8 million borrowers facing hardship.

Uncertainty is the key theme for markets on the eve of Election Day, but fixed income investors say there are a few opportunities to snap up solid yield even as the market holds its breath. "We are constructive on fixed income as a whole, despite these uncertainties, and we're stressing to investors that yields are really quite attractive – and the income generation we can get from fixed income right now is quite powerful," Persson added. On the municipal bond side, offerings include the iShares National Muni Bond ETF (MUB) , which has a 30-day SEC yield of 3.35%. Vanguard also has its Tax-Exempt Bond ETF (VTEB) , with a 30-day SEC yield of 3.4%. The iShares MBS ETF (MBB) has a 30-day SEC yield of 4.01% and a net expense ratio of 0.04%.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday that his government planned to cut student loans for around three million Australians by 20%, wiping off around 16 billion Australian dollars ($10 billion) in debts. The move builds on May's budget, which attacked cost of living pressures in Australia and gave debt relief for students, as well as more investment to make medicines cheaper, and a boost to a rent assistance program. "This will help everyone with a student debt right now, whilst we work hard to deliver a better deal for every student in the years ahead," Albanese said in a statement announcing the cut to student loans for tertiary education. The changes would mean the average graduate with a loan of AU$27,600 would have AU$5,520 wiped, the government said, adding that they would take effect from June 1, 2025.

George Wilson learned the hard way that there's no such thing as a free lunch — or, in his case, a free dinner that cost him a chunk of his retirement savings. He also met David Escarcega, one of the hosts and a broker who would eventually advise him to invest in so-called non-correlated, fixed-income alternative products from the now-bankrupt firm GWG. AdvertisementBut those meals aren't really free, Murray said. They're referred to as "free lunch seminars," said Adam Gana, a securities attorney who worked on Wilson's case. In 2017, he decided to renew his investment, according to documents viewed by Insider.

Australian golfer Jeffrey Guan has vowed to return to the sport and “conquer any obstacle” after he was struck in the face by a golf ball and completely lost sight in his left eye. “The instant ringing and pain rushed to my head, and I dropped to the ground,” Guan wrote. Any activity that required energy, including walking and eating, would leave him in “excruciating pain,” he wrote. Though he missed the cut, “just competing in the event was a massive accomplishment,” Golf Magazine wrote. He had recently signed a deal with Sportfive, a sports marketing company based in Germany that also represents Spanish professional golfer Jon Rahm.

Greater China is a key market for Apple, with new AI features expected to roll out in April. It also rolled out its highly-anticipated Apple Intelligence software in the US in English on Monday. While consumers may be buying the newest iPhones in Greater China, they'll have to wait until April for Apple Intelligence to launch in Chinese, however. However, competition is stiff, and Apple Intelligence still needs time to prove itself. It'll take months to know for certain if AI can move the needle for Apple in Greater China.

I tried the $1,000 Beef Case at Papi Steak, the celebrity-loved restaurant at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. When the Fontainebleau Las Vegas opened its doors in 2023, the pair knew they wanted to bring their concept to the West Coast. With Republicans favored to win the Senate, Harris may have few opportunities to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda, shifting the Democratic ideological fight to key personnel decisions. “It’d be a strategic blunder for Harris to pick an ugly fight over Lina Khan’s future when there’s already strong consensus among Democrats. Moderate senators like Bob Casey and Jackie Rosen are actively campaigning on the FTC’s work to lower prices,” said a Senate Democratic aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive subject. Removing her would not only infuriate the left but it could provoke a confirmation fight with Senate Republicans over her replacement. Some in the progressive movement believe Harris should simply leave her there without going through confirmation again in the Senate if need be.

While the hardware sales are certainly profitable, they pale in comparison to the profitability of Apple's Services. It's impossible to do consistently, and that's why Jim Cramer always says "own, don't trade" Apple stock. During the reported quarter, Apple returned over $29 billion to shareholders, including $3.8 billion in dividends and equivalents and another $25 billion via the repurchase of 112 million shares. Though Services sales missed the mark, gross income managed to outpace expectations thanks to significant year-over-year margin expansion. The growing installed base of active devices is of course translating into strong engagement with Apple's services.
