Ukraine Calls for Western Warplanes Despite U.S. Refusal

Ukraine renewed its calls for Western weaponry including new aircraft to replace its Soviet-vintage fleet, despite a refusal from President Biden to send U.S. F-16s. Less than a week after Kyiv secured pledges for more than 300 U.S. and German-made tanks from Washington and its European partners, Ukraine is looking for more powerful weapons, including F-16 jet fighters and longer-range missiles like Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as ATACMS, that can strike deeper into occupied territory and even hit targets inside Russia.
Ukrainian paratroopers waited Saturday for transport in Chasiv Yar, to the west of the front-line city of Bakhmut, eastern Ukraine. KYIV, Ukraine—Ukraine called on its Western backers to supply longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian-held territory, as Russia claimed fresh advances in the monthslong battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut. In his nightly address on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine needed advanced weapons systems such as the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, to counteract Russian strikes that were killing Ukrainian civilians.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is in Washington to meet with President Biden and Congress. Zelenskyy brings with him a long military wish list, though it's unclear what he will go home with. He is set to ask for weapons that the US has long balked at providing, including Gray Eagle drones. But it's only one of the weapons Zelenskyy is expected to press for in his meetings with Biden and others. But the US has long balked at providing them, fearing that long-range weapons would be too provocative for Russian leaders.

The US modified HIMARS rocket launchers it sent to Ukraine, according to The Wall Street Journal. Instead, the launchers work with shorter-range munitions that can strike Russian forces occupying Ukrainian territory, but not reach far into Russia itself. Since June, the US has supplied Ukraine with at least 20 HIMARS launchers. Rockets fired from HIMARS have been used to strike Russian ammunition depots, logistics supplies and command centers on Ukrainian territory, according to the Journal. The Biden administration has so far proved reluctant to provide the weapons, according to an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal, over fears that sensitive technology could end up in the hands of US adversaries.
Factbox: Russia prepares to formally annex 15% of Ukraine

REUTERS/Sergei PivovarovLONDON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin is preparing to formally annex around 15% of Ukrainian territory after referendums on joining Russia in areas controlled by Russian forces or Russian-backed separatists. The United States is prepared to impose additional economic costs on Russia in conjunction with U.S. allies if Moscow moves forward with annexing portions of Ukrainian territory, the White House said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine had received sophisticated air defence systems, known as National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), from the United States. Taken together, Russia would be annexing at least 90,000 square km of Ukrainian territory. With Crimea and the territory in the four other areas, Russia would have annexed at least one fifth of Ukrainian territory.
Russia is again recycling its threats, warning the US against sending long-range missiles to Ukraine. It is again warning that the US would be crossing a "red line" if it supplied the weapons. The US has provided Ukraine with billions of dollars in military assistance throughout Russia's war. The US has provided Ukraine with more than $15 billion in military assistance since Biden took office, and more may be on the way. Russia has repeatedly warned the US and its allies to stop sending arms to Ukraine, arguing that it is prolonging the bloody conflict Putin started.
