New Hampshire Primary: Wake-Up Call or Last Call?
  + stars: | 2024-01-19 | by ( Susan Milligan | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +7 min
Should Trump's lead hold, says Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump will become the first candidate – aside from sitting presidents – to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. "We're so far past the days when voters nationally were really just waking up" to the campaign debates in the early weeks of a presidential election year, says Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire professor and author of the book "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics." New Hampshire GOP voters, however, are a different breed of Republicans, Smith says, focusing more on fiscal conservatism and small government. Haley has 36% support and DeSantis 6% backing among primary voters. Trump seems to think so, too: He has focused much of his vitriol in the waning days of the New Hampshire campaign on Haley.

Why the controversial mullet is having a moment

Long hair, don’t careThe “modern day” mullet largely originates from David Bowie’s genre-defining and gender-norm defying persona, Ziggy Stardust, Glasscock said. “People from the Continental Congress wore what we would read as a full metal, 1992 mullet,” said Glasscock. (“Hockey hair” was, meanwhile, a popular synonym for mullet at the time, given its prominence among players and fans.) Devin Yalkin/Courtesy A24While playing Kerry Von Erich in “The Iron Claw,” White also wore his dynamic, sweeping mullet off-set — but not entirely by choice. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry, here’s a ponytail holder.”But that dedication may have played an integral part in a mullet revival kicking off 2024.

Best ActorThe “Holdovers” star Paul Giamatti has come on strong during the televised portion of awards season, taking the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical and the Critics Choice award for best actor, period. Both men feel like shoo-ins to be nominated, but they’ll need to pick up a SAG Award next month to stay neck-and-neck with Giamatti. Best ActressWould any of the other categories kindly consider donating a few nomination slots to the best actress race? Those two Golden Globe winners should be considered the lockiest of locks, and the real race is who gets to keep them company in the category.

Sarah Gundle Sarah Gundle, PsyDThese are appropriate questions, when you consider the public fascination with stories about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was recently released on parole after serving eight and a half years for helping to kill her abusive mother. The revelation drove Gypsy Rose to seek revenge by convincing her boyfriend to murder her mother. Of course, the behavior of Dee Dee Blanchard and Debra McCurdy was beyond the pale, rising to the level of evil. And would Dee Dee Blanchard have been able to stop the train of destruction if someone had more doggedly recognized and confronted her mental illness? Maybe we need to heed the words of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who has said that trying to understand where her mother was coming from “brought me to a place of forgiveness.” Blanchard recently told CNN of her mother: “She was not an evil woman.

Noah, a 19-year-old who goes to college in Illinois, uses sports betting to keep up with his friends from high school. The expansion of legal sports betting in the US has fueled a widespread culture of gambling on college campuses, as savvy students find betting alternatives and workarounds for age limits and state restrictions. Many sports-loving college students like Marcus and Noah casually use fantasy gaming, sweepstakes, and betting to make and maintain friendships. BI spoke with seven college students and three researchers to learn more about what sports betting looks like on campuses. Why Adults Are More Imaginative Than Children
  + stars: | 2023-12-02 | by ( Andrew Shtulman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The idea that children are imaginative but adults are not is a popular theme in children’s literature. “Do you really mean we won’t be able to hear that when we’re older?” asks one of the children. “You’ll hear all right,” explains Mary Poppins, “but you won’t understand.”In these stories, children are open to possibilities that elude the adult mind. They grasp extraordinary ideas that adults cannot fathom and have clever insights that adults do not appreciate. Children play elaborate make-believe games with their toys and role-playing games with their peers.

For an incumbent president, primary races -- the state-by-state competitions that nominate a political party's official presidential candidate -- are normally a perfunctory affair. Pro-Biden Democrats' volunteer-focused effort, with just a $100,000 budget, will encourage primary voters to put Biden's name on the New Hampshire ballot. Lyndon B. Johnson, then the Democratic incumbent, shunned the New Hampshire primary in 1968 due to over-confidence, only to see an insurgent campaign from Minnesota, U.S. Biden write-in organizers have largely settled on asking voters to write in "Joe Biden," but believe that other names like "President Biden" and "President Biden and Vice President Harris" satisfy a state law that says to count the vote if the reasonable intent of the voter is clear. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A group of residents have sued a public utility company in the U.S. Virgin Islands after authorities there reported finding high levels of lead and copper in the tap water on St. Croix. He said the agency acted swiftly and transparently after the test results became available and that officials are still working to improve water quality in St. Croix. “What people are looking for is justice.”The investigation into the state of tap water in St. Croix began in late September, following complaints of reddish-brown water on the island of more than 50,600 people. In late October, the local government announced that officials found high levels of lead and copper and warned people not to drink their tap water. She also criticized the government for announcing a couple of weeks ago that lead levels were low or undetectable at samples taken from various schools across St. Croix.
