German Chancellor Olaf Scholz smiles during a question time on July 3, 2024 at the Bundestag (lower house of parliament) in Berlin. "It is about a strong defense, a strong [German army] that offers protection from the aggressive tyrants of our time. An economic growth initiative has been planned alongside the budget, Scholz said. But the budget must then be discussed by the German parliament after its summer break, before being finalized later in the year. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks after spending plans shared by individual ministries exceeded constraints by billions.

Russia launches many of its drone and missile attacks from within its own borders, and it amasses troops and equipment at home for offensive pushes into Ukraine. But for a long time, Ukraine could only turn to options like long-range drones to go after targets in Russia. De Bretton-Gordon noted that many Russian missile and drone attacks are launched from Russia itself. Russia initiated a new offensive against Kharkiv on May 10, launching deadly missile attacks and slowly pushing its military forward. Ingram agreed, saying that in Kharkiv, Ukraine's new permissions have "made a huge difference.

Istanbul CNN —Allegations of sexual abuse against a child by a Syrian man in Kayseri, Turkey, have sparked overnight riots that targeted Syrian businesses and cars in the city. Heavy rains caused roads to flood, submerged cars and subways and cut power to some parts of the city. Heavy rain caused a section of roof at New Delhi’s airport to collapse on Friday, crushing one man to death, and injuring eight others. In Uttarakhand, video posted by ANI News shows vehicles swept away following heavy rain being hauled out of floodwaters. Meanwhile, seasonal monsoon rains usually start in June until September, bringing bands of heavy rains from the southwest that quench fields, nourish crops, and replenish reservoirs. Last June, nearly half a million people in northeast India were affected by severe flooding after heavy rains battered the region.

CNN —Three military horses from the prestigious Household Cavalry have been recovered after bolting through central London on Monday morning. In scenes that appear to be similar to an instance in April, five soldiers were conducting a routine exercise with six horses from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, when the lead horse was spooked by a London bus. Along with the lead horse, which was being led rather than ridden at the time, two riders were thrown from their horses as the animals ran free through the capital’s streets. “We can confirm that whilst exercising this morning, three horses from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment became loose from their riders. “One horse received minor injuries, but no further treatment is required and there were no injuries to the soldiers involved,” the statement added.

The pardon won’t automatically change the record of convicted veterans, but it will allow them to apply for a certificate that will help them receive withheld benefits. “Our nation’s service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives in order to defend our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Biden said. A service member’s discharge status can determine what Veterans Affairs benefits they are eligible for. To get their records changed under the pardon, veterans will need to complete an online application, which will go to their military service department.

Unsponsored athletes in track and field would typically purchase their own apparel bearing the emblems of major brands, effectively providing free advertising for the companies. Instead, Bandit Running offers Olympic hopefuls the all-black kits and warmups — along with short-term endorsement deals. All three men are among 17 people arrested so far in connection with Wednesday’s events – most of them members of the military, the report says. Other top officials arrested include military intelligence chief Julio Buitrago. As he was being arrested Zúñiga alleged – without providing evidence – that he was acting on Arce’s instructions. The investigation into Wednesday’s events will continue until all “participants” in the coup are identified, according to the Bolivian government report.

That is why India and China have their armies deployed on these heights along an unmarked and, in many places, contested boundary between the two countries. “One is the Indian perception of the Line of Actual Control. Another is the Chinese perception of the Line of Actual Control. He didn’t have any documents. He was wrapped in bandages and 2,500 miles from his village in the Himalayas. But as he lay in a Russian military hospital, wounded in battle and surrounded by people speaking an alien language, Krishna Bahadur Shahi, an out-of-work engineer from Nepal who had committed the mistake of joining Moscow’s army, made a vow. “I had to get out,” he said in a recent interview. But the Russian military continues to rely on it, boosting combat power with impoverished young foreigners even though many, like Mr. Shahi, said they didn’t know they would be going into battle.

The recent strike marked a "significant milestone" in the development of the new Precision Strike Missile, the Army said. The PrSM, a next-generation long-range precision strike weapon, will eventually replace the older MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS. In this case, my mission was personal: I was seeking records in Altay’s Civil Affairs Bureau on my father’s service in a Chinese army unit six decades earlier. I knew police officers would soon be trailing me, as they did whenever foreign journalists turned up in Xinjiang. President Xi Jinping had begun enacting much harsher policies in the region, home to Uyghur and Kazakh Muslims. I knew that finding anything about my father, Yook Kearn Wong, was a long shot. I asked her if she knew anything about an old army base of mostly Kazakh cavalry soldiers, where my father and a few other ethnic Han soldiers had served in 1952.

Male Kindergarten Teachers Are Here to Help. Many studies show that older boys benefit from having male teachers. There hasn’t been as much research on the youngest students and their teachers — in large part because there are so few male teachers in early education to begin with. Social-emotional learning has given them vocabulary to express their feelings, said Greg Smedley-Warren, 45, a kindergarten teacher in Nashville. “It’s like unlocking a new market of potential educators.”The male kindergarten teachers said that from their perspective, the fulfillment of the job generally outweighed the negatives.

When the German Army finally broke through in central Ukraine in September 1941, pasting up ordinances around Kyiv to announce a new occupying authority, they had only a few days’ calm. Less than a week after the occupation began, an explosion went off in a children’s toy store on Khreshchatyk Street — the capital’s grandest shopping boulevard, Kyiv’s equivalent of Fifth Avenue or the Champs-Élysées. Soon the city hall and the Communist Party headquarters crumbled. Walk through central Kyiv today, down the Khreshchatyk, past the grand Independence Square and the ritzy Tsum department store, and you can read the history of postwar and post-independence Ukraine in the subsequent architecture. When the city is a battleground, architecture becomes an act of defense and defiance.

CNN —US officials have serious concerns that in the event of a full-blown war between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group could overwhelm Israel’s air defenses in the north — including the much-vaunted Iron Dome air defense system, three US officials told CNN. Israeli officials have told the US they are planning to shift resources from southern Gaza to northern Israel in preparation for a possible offensive against the group, US officials told CNN on Wednesday. “We assess that at least some” Iron Dome batteries “will be overwhelmed,” said a senior administration official. Earlier this month, Hezbollah released a video purporting to show a drone striking and damaging an Iron Dome battery on an army base in northern Israel. The Iron Dome is fundamental to Israel’s defense and the US government has spent over $2.9 billion on the program, according to the Congressional Research Service.
