May 9 (Reuters) - Videogame publisher Electronic Arts Inc (EA.O) beat fourth-quarter booking estimates on Tuesday as the latest installments in its "FIFA" and "Madden NFL" series kept gamer interest strong, sending the company's shares up 3.3% after the bell. EA reported net bookings of $1.95 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with Refinitiv estimates of $1.76 billion. "Record live services performance and increased engagement, particularly from our EA Sports FIFA franchise, drove better-than-expected Q4 net bookings," Chief Financial Officer Chris Suh said. EA also said it expects fiscal 2024 net bookings between $7.30 billion and $7.70 billion, compared with estimates of $7.52 billion. Bookings outlook for the current quarter was in line with expectations.
A Delta flight from Houston to Atlanta was delayed by three hours because bees swarmed around its wing. Photos and a video showed the large swarm of bees collecting on the tip of the plane's wing. Ground equipment was used to push back the airplane, and the bees were removed before takeoff. A Delta flight from Texas to Georgia was delayed for three hours on Wednesday after other flying objects latched onto the plane — a swarm of bees. Honey bees typically swarm when an established colony has grown too crowded and the bees fly off to establish a new one.

U.S. crude oil stocks fell by about 6.1 million barrels in the week ended April 21, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute (API) figures on Tuesday. Analysts had expected crude inventories to fall by about 1.5 million barrels. Gasoline inventories fell by 1.9 million barrels last week while distillate inventories rose by 1.7 million barrels, the sources said. U.S. crude oil stockpiles have been falling since the middle of March as refineries have increased runs to produce more gasoline ahead of the peak summer demand period that starts in May. This has pushed WTI futures prices into backwardation, when prompt futures are higher than later-dated futures, reflecting the higher refinery demand.
The global rice market is set to log its largest shortfall in two decades in 2023, according to Fitch Solutions. "At the global level, the most evident impact of the global rice deficit has been, and still is, decade-high rice prices," Fitch Solutions' commodities analyst Charles Hart said. That would mar the largest global rice deficit since 2003/2004, when the global rice markets generated a deficit of 18.6 million tonnes, said Hart. "The global rice production deficit situation will increase the cost of importing rice for major rice importers such as Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and African countries in 2023," said Tjakra. "It is our view that global rice production will stage a solid rebound in 2023/24, expecting total output to rise by 2.5% year on year," Fitch's report forecast, hinging on India being a "principal engine" of global rice output over the next five years.

Despite being bigger and more advanced than its enemy, Russia's air force has struggled in Ukraine. It's commonly said that Russian fighter pilots are not as well trained as their Western counterparts, particularly those from the United States. But however ineffective you may think Russian pilot training is compared to the West, the truth seems to be … much worse. A Russian air force pilot prepares to take off in an Su-35 fighter jet at Hemeimeem air base in Syria in September 2019. Put simply, the Gulf War air campaign creates a damning juxtaposition when compared directly to Russia's air campaign over Ukraine.
The version of the clip with altered dialogue being shared was created using deepfake technology, which manipulates audio and visuals to make it appear that an individual is saying something (here). There are signs of several techniques used to create the fake video, according to Dominic Lees, an associate professor of filmmaking at the University of Reading. “Voice cloning has been used to create the fake voices of Gates and his interviewer…The fake audio has been applied to a re-edited version of the interview,” Lees told Reuters. So, this analysis suggests the video is likely to be manipulated.”A spokesperson for ABC News told Reuters, “The video is clearly fake. The video shared on social media has been manipulated using deepfake technology and does not show an authentic interaction between ABC News journalist Sarah Ferguson and Bill Gates.
Jack Kellogg began trading stocks right out of high school in 2017. I'm just using basic trend lines, support, resistance, volume, and those are all my indicators," Kellogg said. By the time the stock market began to rally hard in 2020, he was ready to ride the upwards wave. He uses it on the daily chart as a guide to determine a good buy-in price for the stock he's trading. This gives him a better sense that the stock's price action will trend according to his thesis.

The spotlight will be firmly on the February jobs report scheduled for Friday and Fed Chair Jerome Powell's testimony to congress on Tuesday and Wednesday. Citi strategists expect Powell to indicate a preference for a 25 bps hike but leave all options on the table, since he will speak before the jobs data are released. Gold edges up as dollar weakens, rate-hike worries cap gains
  + stars: | 2023-02-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices rose on Friday as the dollar weakened, though investor worries that recent economic data could lead the U.S. Federal Reserve to keep raising interest rates capped gains. Separately, data showed fourth-quarter personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose 3.7%, revised up from a previous estimate of 3.2%. Thursday's reports are the latest in a flurry of data that has fueled concerns that interest rates would stay higher for longer. The Fed's preferred inflation measure, the PCE data for January, is due at 1330 GMT and will be closely watched. "A lower-than-expected read could see some paring back of hawkish bets, which could prompt renewed upside in gold."
Benchmark Australian thermal coal at Newcastle Port closed last week at $195.13 a tonne, down from the $249.25 the week prior to the attack on Ukraine. But these fears were never fully realised, largely because Russian commodities were re-routed to new buyers and some consuming nations cut consumption of commodities such as natural gas. There are ongoing consequences of the initial spike in commodity prices, with retail fuel and electricity costs in many countries still well above pre-invasion levels. Such a situation maintains China's access to cheap Russian commodities, increases Moscow's dependence on Beijing, while keeping Western countries focused on the war and its costs to their economies and political unity. It's also worth noting that in the months after the invasion much commentary was devoted to how Russia was benefiting from the higher commodity prices and how the Western sanctions on Moscow's exports were failing.
It's time to sell AutoNation as consumer demand for vehicles starts to pull back, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Rajat Gupta downgraded AutoNation to underweight from neutral, saying the car dealer stock is starting to look overvalued after its solid performance during the pandemic. AutoNation shares outperformed at the onset of the Covid pandemic. The car dealer stock jumped more than 40% in 2020, and surged more than 60% in 2021. On Friday, following strong fourth-quarter results, AutoNation shares surged to an all-time high and posted its best day in about three years .
A solid fourth-quarter earnings report from AutoNation on Friday propelled the car dealer's stock to a new all-time high and its best day in nearly three years. The Florida-based dealership group reported an adjusted earnings per share of $6.37 and revenue of $6.7 billion for the previous quarter. AutoNation closed Friday at $157.30 a share, marking a new high for the auto dealer's stock following an 11.4 % increase to end the week. The increase follows AutoNation last year reducing shares outstanding by 25% as it repurchased 15.6 million shares, including 4.6 million during the fourth quarter. AutoNation CEO Mike Manley attributed the solid quarter and record year of earnings to operational execution as well as new all-time high earnings in after sales and customer financing.
Chinese tech giant Tencent is ramping up its efforts to monetize its fast-growing short video function, and Morgan Stanley is bullish on that. Other key growth drivers Morgan Stanley said it believes global gaming will be another key growth driver for Tencent, though it will be a "much longer-term growth story." Another longer-term growth driver is Tencent's software-as-a-service products, namely Tencent Meeting, Tencent Docs and Tencent Cloud. "We believe it will take 2-3 more years for Tencent to reach breakeven in cloud businesses and for them to become a long-term growth driver," the bank said. Morgan Stanley has raised its price target on Tencent to 450 Hong Kong dollars ($57.30) from 420 Hong Kong dollars — an implied upside of about 20% to the stock's closing price on Feb. 13.
Eli Lilly & Co. said revenue for the recently ended quarter fell 9% as lower sales of its Covid-19 antibodies and the strong U.S. dollar weighed on growth. The pharmaceutical company said Thursday that quarterly revenue fell 9% to $7.30 billion, slightly below analyst estimates, according to FactSet. Currency translation, lower realized prices and a drop in demand for some products all dragged on sales. Excluding sales of the company’s Covid-19 antibody treatments, revenue in the quarter rose 5%.

MUMBAI, Jan 23 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee is expected to extend its gains this week, while government bond yields may move marginally higher due to worries about yet another year of elevated borrowing. The local unit is likely to add to its momentum and trade in a broad 80.50-81.50 range this week, analysts said. Despite the corporate flows in the market, steady foreign investment into equities is more important, so it seems appropriate for the rupee to trade around those levels, Biswas added. Market participants expect the benchmark bond yield to trade in the 7.30%-7.40% band this week. The Reserve Bank of India will auction 40 billion rupees each of five- and 10-year green bonds on Wednesday.

Government bond yields are expected to tick up as investors shift focus to the upcoming budget. The rupee climbed 1.7% to 81.3250 per dollar last week, tracking a broad decline in the dollar index . There are a lot of positives for the rupee, including the Fed view, the broadly stable oil prices and the fall in Treasury yields, said Anil Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors. Till then, bond yields should not fall much, as most people are expecting a heavy borrowing calendar," said Ajay Manglunia, managing director and head of investment grade group at JM Financial. Meanwhile, as a bulk of the fresh supply for the next financial year would hit the longer end, market participants expect yields to rise, while shorter-tenor yields may see some fall.
Against the dollar, sterling was last 0.03% lower at $1.2131, after falling 0.4% overnight. It's part of our baseline," said Joseph Capurso, head of international and sustainable economics at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Against a basket of currencies, the U.S. dollar index edged 0.07% higher to 105.62. The onshore yuan was last more than 0.2% higher at 6.9771 per dollar. "Anticipation of further easing of measures in China should continue to favor RMB (and) RMB-linked assets."
The monetary policy committee (MPC), comprising three members from the RBI and three external members, raised the key lending rate or the repo rate (INREPO=ECI) to 6.25% in a majority decision. "The MPC was of the view that further calibrated monetary policy action was warranted to keep inflation expectations anchored, break core inflation persistence and contain second round effects,” Das said as he announced the monetary policy committee's decision. We see a possibility of another 25 bps rate hike before a prolonged pause," Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank said. A 6.8% growth (rate) is robust," Das said. The Indian rupee dipped against the dollar after the policy decision and comments on inflation, while government bond yields rose.
Average interest rates on refinanced student loans are mixed from two weeks ago, according to Credible. The average 10-year fixed student loan rate for borrowers with credit scores below 680 is 7.84%. Federal student loan rates for the upcoming school year have risen by the most in nearly two decades. Private student loan rates aren't directly affected by federal rates, but private rates may go up as they don't have to stay as low to remain competitive with federal ones. Private student loans are not eligible for any federal forgiveness programs, including the widescale forgiveness currently being challenged in court.
